Talk by Kathleen Ditzig: Helen Frankenthaler's Small Paintings
From 1978 to 1979, the exhibition Helen Frankenthaler: A Selection of Small-Scale Paintings 1949-1977 travelled through Asia Pacific. In Southeast Asia, it was presented first at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila in October 1978 and the month after at the National Museum of Singapore’s Art Gallery. This lecture takes Helen Frankenthaler: A Selection of Small-Scale Paintings 1949-1977 as a lens to provide an exhibitionary history of the presentation in relation to a broader history of the US Cultural Cold War in Southeast Asia.

I'm curious as to why comments are often turned off, certainly from Lisson gallery. Certainly we have here another contender for post contextual waffle master like Sean Scummy the hard man. Consumes itself, tempering chance, pictorial language, struggle, unconscious drive to explore image making by making himself a passive intuitive vessel that you can't control. You mean like artex or just loads and loads of very thick very expensive paint???

I couldn't agree more! For anyone who looks at a Mark Rothko and dimisses it at something their 4 year old painted in kindergarten my response is: go ahead and try it. Just try replicating what Rothko did with the Seagram murals or any of his color form paintings. I've seen a few in person at the MOMA and they are staggeringly beautiful and hard to replicate.
