During the pandemic I made the choice to invest shooting pictures and video in a semi dead medium that keeps going up in cost…not my brightest choice but I won’t stop now!

cleaning the camera without cleaning it
Just got a uc1 for 5 bucks! I can't wait to see the pics

The Yashica Mat nearly saved our boys in the Alamo from general santa anna and his army of 2000 men. See my new short for a lil history lesson😂
Are they all just a tad out of focus? Or is that editing style? I gave a G1 as well and was just wondering.
It’s a bit more of the style on this one, The G1 I only ever had focus problems with occasionally. But for my copy of the camera it never was totally out of focus it was more just it focused in the area I didn’t want it to. Which is one of the reasons I sold it. I use a Contax 139q now and it’s been great.
Can the focusing screen be dry cleaned or can it just be blown dry?
It took me a while to get used to the shutter button, mine is quite sensitive. I fired some shots off by mistake to start with, but overall I’m very pleased with the image quality, and handling.
Those costal shots look so good! Where did you get your reels developed?
Pro8mm! They do good work. I did also find recently the negative space. They do great work as well.
Is this an LCD screen? Or is it a reflection?
Reflection, kind of. It’s a glass screen that you use as a viewfinder. It’s really nice and sharp, one of the highlights of the 124G its got a fantastic view finder.
@@spencerbacon Yes, it shows very well, just like an LCD screen.
Hi :) I'm planning on testing out this roll tomorrow. I was wondering whether you light metered based off of it being the 500 iso or 320 iso. Would love your insight on this, thanks!
I metered this at box speed, so 500 iso and it came out perfectly.
thank you so much!! @@spencerbacon
Those A-15 cameras are hard to find in good condition. You are lucky to have the one that has the cable release socket. Not all A-15's have that.
how do you transfer the pictures taken without the film? and also how do you take videos with the film… i found this old camera recently and literally have no idea how to use it haha
What camera is that?
This was the Keystone A15 16mm camera, it was a lovely starter 16mm film camera.
you can make a SICK music video with this footage
another scam on ebay or any online market now a days thanks to the youtube hype. got my t4 years ago for like 100$ now its impossible to buy cheap
Your Tower of Terror shots are just perfect. They fit the “vibe” of that ride so well.
Thank you! I was really pleased with how these shots turned out.
The remedy to his immediate problem of spots on his dried film is Photoflo. First really wash your processed film Just running tap water into the top of any open tank holding a film reel results in almost no water flow over the film, so no significant washing in the fairly short wash time proposed. If you use a tank and film reel much like the Paterson, run a small hose from tap down into the center core of the tank, forcing water to flush out at the bottom of the tank and up thought the film reel(s), then overflow out of the tank. Do this for 50% longer than recommended in your instructions. Mix Photoflo at half the strength recommended on the bottle (1:400 rather than 1:200) as this avoids residue from the Photoflo itself on your negatives. Mix that in distilled water, as the water spots you seek to avoid are deposits of calcium compounds which naturally exist in "hard" water. Soak the washed film in this solution for at least 30 seconds, then pour off and discard. (Do not reuse!) Hang film to dry in a dust free environment, like a bathroom or shower no one is using. Result: No spots, ever. Do not use a fucking sponge or squeegee, unless you like scratches on your negatives.
Another video droning on about the ignorance of the maker. Back before they had video cameras watching intersections, they used film cameras to take street surveillance photos. JCH StreetPan is one of those old surveillance films, newly manufactured. If you were to determine the speed of the film by ISO standards, it would rate around 80-100. However, it is sold as a 400 speed film, meaning it is "normally" shot with a two plus stop under exposure. Then the "normal" processing is a two to three stop push. The result is an image with almost no shadow detail and range of about 6 stops between black and white, yielding a very high contrast image. You can get the same results for half the price buying Fomapan 100, rating it at 400 for exposure, then pushing it three stops in development. (If that's what you want....)
A great demonstration of what not to do if you are a moron and do not know what you are doing. Fortunately, its a 124G, which is not much of a loss to the medium format community.
Very cool guys.
Have you tried printing out any of your photos? I’m in the UK and the cameras are quite expensive to get over here, I love the film aesthetic but I don’t want to invest in this if the quality is like ‘phone quality’.
Just use your phone and make the film look in post or get a film camera. I don't think this little camera is worth it anyways when it has the same look of a disspoasble camera from the 90s
Left eared video. 👎🏽
Thank you for letting me know, I am not an audio guy, I figured out the issue on my mic, and it’s going to be fixed for my next video!
Insightful, thanks for sharing that good tip.
Hello, I picked up a sx70 at an estate sale recently. There are some stains that almost looks like rusts on the roller. I attempted to clean it but nothing came off…also the roller feels smooth so it doesn’t seem to be gunk…just wondering if this might affect its usability (haven’t purchased film yet, hesitating whether to make that investment) 😊 thank you!
The only way to find out is testing it, on mine I actually had something similar, there was some gunk on mine, but it didn’t affect it, if its not coming off, it shouldn’t affect it, but unfortunately since its such an old camera, (almost 50 years old these cameras are) the only way to know for sure is to test it. Thankfully with a Polaroid you’ll know within 15minutes. Another option if you wanna go for it, is Retrospekt.com, they refurbish these cameras, if you send yours in they’ll fully refurbish it, and I believe it was 200 last I checked their prices.
I wonder how you still managed to get images with 600 ASA film. Because even if you use the new SX-70 films sold by Polaroid, you still NEED to turn the compensation wheel to minus 1-stop (dark), that's because the new film is 160 ASA, more sensitive then what the camera "thinks" is inside. The camera is designed to work with 70 ASA film. Polaroid sells a lens kit with an ND filter that allows you to use 600 ASA film normally in an SX-70 camera. You may also want to clean the light sensor, it's pretty easy and it improves the photos quality drastically.
Did no one notice that the camera described in the title to the video is not the camera he discusses in the video? He's sporting a GS645S (fixed 60mm lens, meter, rangefinder), but title is for the GS645W (same body, except no rangefinder and a 45mm lens). As for the GS645S, he needs to know that the bumper bar surrounding the lens is there for a reason rather than style. It's there to prevent the fixed lens from being bumped from the side or the front. Why? Because Fuji made the focusing helix out of god knows what, and the result is that the focus function and shutter linkage can be destroyed by one modest rap on the lens. Apparently, he got one which is undamaged, but based on the number of GS645S units I saw over the years with this damage, I'd guess that half of them out there suffer from this irreparable damage to some degree. Best: Don't buy. Alternative: An iron clad right to return and full refund. Repair is impossible, so accept nothing short of perfect.
You did not clean the camera
Hey spencer, i've introduced myself in the photography world just yesterday, and i have a question. but firstly i gotta say what motivated me to join the camera usage is because my mom had a camera back from 2008 and i love that type of retro/vintage looking it takes. is there any modern camera with that same type of vintage looking camera that i can buy or search for or i gotta buy an old camera to have a cool old looking photo? ty since the response =)
Welcome to the photography world! So there’s a million different options for you, if you want to go the route of film photography, I learned on the Nikon N80 which is still fairly inexpensive on ebay, a lot of those film cameras from the 90s are great machines to start out on, if your looking at digital, there’s a lot of great options to get started, Sony makes a lot of great digital cameras for beginners that take great photos, I usually talk to people who want to get into video or photography, the best start up camera you can have is also your phone. Theres a lot of mobile photography channels on here as well that will guide through taking that good picture. Hope this helps!
I was under the impression that the xrays the TSA use are safe for film rolls under 800 ASA?
Yes, they are. Going through it once, going through twice, it starts to show issues. Even after you shoot the film you want to make sure to have it handchecked coming back through. If your film under 800 iso goes through once, don’t let it go through again on a return trip.
I thought films are safe now going through xray machines
Depending on the iso and how many times, the Kodak Gold went through twice. The more times it goes through the more it affects it. But if you have something with low iso and it went through once, odds are your fine, If you have something that is 800 iso and higher going through once, odds are it’ll have that line going up and down. but that looks like it’s all it would be. I’d like to test higher iso film at the airport one day.
What is that on hot-shoe ?
It is a lightmeter: TTArtisan Light Meter this is the official name, the lightmeter built into the Yashica doesn’t work at the moment, so this is how I get around it.
@@spencerbacon I see. Thank you. I don't know why are people unhappy with Yashica's original meter. Mine works just fine and reads light properly.
@@dinorossi6611 This light meter on mine is absolutely temporary, the light meter in my yashica is physically broken I need a new wire for it, which I have, I’ll send it into the shop within the next few months.
@@spencerbacon Got it. I had mine CLAd by Hama.
hey man i just bought an sx-70 and i love it, glad to see more people that share the same interest
It’s a great little camera! Enjoy it man!
mine has cracks in the exact same place
It seems that older SX-70 models have cracks like that. Thankfully leather repair is very easy to come by!!
love this stuff man.
Thank you! I feel truly blessed to have been given this footage. It belonged to my grandfather.
What camera did you use?
I used the Keystone A15 16mm film camera. It’s a great starter camera, and you can find one fairly cheaply in good condition, 2-300 dollars.
@@spencerbacon Did you use the Wallensak lens that comes with the camera?
@@MORCOPOLO0817 yes that is the lens I had.
very nice from france
Thank you! Happy holidays!
How do you like the 90mm? I just bought a kit
The 90mm is great for portraits, I didn’t think I would like it but I got a 28mm recently, thinking I’d sell it, but i missed the longer focal length. I really like the 90mm!
The 28/45/90 is a great 3-lens combo.
I have the very same model from my father. Hope to restore the leather soon
I got mine from Etsy for like 20 bucks its absolutely worth it, gave new life to the camera.
Esa camara es muy bonita .
Just purchased a SX-70 last week. Shot my first pack of film (sx-70). I'm getting good results - once you get to know your camera and it's exposure settings. Might take a few more "experimental" packs to completely nail it though. Be interesting to see how you get on with actual SX-70 film.
Excited to give it more love! The camera is really fun to shoot. Even with the bad exposures I was getting.
I honestly think the images turned out with a really nice vibe, definitely interesting!
I agree! I definitely appreciated how they looked, and it will definitely be something I’ll keep in mind if I need to replicate that vibe. Thanks for commenting!
