The CRAZY CHALLENGES of Red Bull Rampage
Red Bull Rampage is possibly the biggest and most wild event in the MTB calendar every year, Todd Barber, it's creator highlights some of the challenges they face in order to pull it off.
Todd Barber, co-founder of Red Bull Rampage, joins us to share the incredible journey behind one of the most iconic freeride mountain biking events in the world. From Rampage’s daring beginnings in 2001 to the groundbreaking inclusion of women riders and the evolution of its unique judging format, Todd reflects on two decades of redefining action sports.
We also dive into the creation of NST Bike, a bold evolution of the Proving Grounds qualifier Todd launched in 2019. Discover how a collaboration with snowboarding legend Travis Rice helped shape the Natural Selection Tour’s expansion into biking, bridging the gap between slopestyle and big-mountain freeride competitions.
With upcoming events in Queenstown, New Zealand-including a “last chance qualifier” at the Dream Track-Todd shares his vision for the future of freeride, the challenges of finding unique locations, and the exciting multi-sport expansion of NST. This episode is packed with stories of innovation, community, and pushing the limits of what’s possible.

another great show Andrew, happy holidays brother
First of all Brendogs run was not the winning run of Rampage 2024 but he got massiv undercored an i will explain why. Rampage is about building your line, right? So Brendogs line was build by 3 People and was ridden only by himself. When 6 Riders Team up to build a feature, there are 18 People working on this. So much less efford those lads put into the Line that ist NOT unique. IMO building had to be Part of the score. And no those germans who are ridden Brendogs Line are not average mountainbikers, those Lads rode better than 99% of the MTB Community I watched the Event now 6 Times and still Semunuc is not top 3 IMO. You can argue if Godziek or TVS is the Winner of 2024 Rampage and T-Mac 3rd Place is fine for me too. But Semunuc is now a 5 time winner. And that sounds huge. And this is the only reason why he was winning 2024 imo. We will see if there is any improvement in the 2025 Rampage
Needles low key booking a commentating gig mid podcast hahaha fucking love it
For gravity disciplines, skills come first. Vo2max and muscular endurance only maintain good form during the segment or run.
The amount of ads on here is ridiculous
It would be great to find out more about nutrition. Not just what to eat, but how much per macro per bodyweight and or discipline, the best time to eat, and the best source of macro.
Hit him up. Sure he can guide you if you book a session with him. That is interesting
Hey dude happy to have a chat 💬
Super interesting! I love this sort of stuff. I could listen to him all day
Thats awesome to hear. Glad you like it. Must try do more similar episodes in the future.
I think the solution is in the brain. Stop over gripping. People with tremendous fitness can have this issue, and yet people with no fitness may never experience this problem. If you increase vo2 and endurance, that just means you can grip harder when maybe you just needed to grip less in the first place.
I wish it were this simple and this may play a role BUT have you ridden down Val Di Sole at speed? Sometimes not an option to grip it lighter..
@@MovingTheNeedlePodcast I'm sure Val Di Sole is epic. But not so exotic of a problem as you might imagine. Have you spent an hour with your body weight hanging from your fingers? First thing you learn is not to over grip, else the easiest climbs will spit you out in minutes. Fitness plays a minor role in grip endurance, you have to specifically train isometric holds.
That guy is sweating so bad like he is withdrawing from opiates.
hahah
So 100mm rise bars all around in DH next season? Get them legs straight 😅
haha DAK STACK
science > exercise > sport > play
Such fun film. The girls killed it!
💪
Cheers dudes ❤
Cheers
There needs to be an alternative to the UCI.. its tainted from all the money and they aren't to be trusted .
the film is so sick!
bren and sam Deathgrip 3 LFG
The us open at mountain creek when it was Diablo bike park had all the great riders! From the early to mid 2000s! I remember Sam Hill was on iron horse going down the rocks and never heard a bike make noises like it was about to blow up and go so fast!
Absolutely love this section of the film
Clay’s passion and vision is so awesome. Roll on Maverick!
every big regulatory organization is a cancer to the undertaking, no exceptions: UCI FIFA FIA IOC FIS ...
UCI is trash. I wish all the riders would boycott.
Good stuff, that was the last fun Syndicate team. Best of luck Luka next year!!
Awesome! Tuning in
Yes !
The fact that Bren can keep up with some of the fastest world cup riders and still do rampage . Crazy
Hate uci
We finally fixed the bike design to get away from roadie influence... Now it's time to fix the events and organizations to get away from roadie influence. Particularly for DH being a much smaller discipline. I dunno how much these rules would still be 'necessary' in XC but closing the walls on DH more and more is gonna kill the sport. Shout out to everyone running 'local' events now. They are needed now more than ever (regardless of sanction/uci points).
Man Clay is such a class act. Pro downhill series is going to produce the next best riders in the world.
Well said
This maverick attitude is what makes this sport so great. Things can easily become very rigid and formal when investments need return etc etc but it takes away somewhat from what we all love about the sport and industry. Clay is showing the way it can be done and look at the support and love he's getting for it. We all have national series but having national based events that are done with this depth and professionalism would seriously grow the sport away from in Clays words "The custodians of the sport up until now who don't care about the things we have said. But, i do!".
You were working OT in VT
Respect!
Such a boss
So stoked on this series!
Cheering for this guy!
Such a great interview Needles, awesome job. Luca is such a nice guy and very open and honest. You have an uncanny knack for making your guests relax and open up. Keep up the good work 🤘❤️🌈🕊️🌎
Cheers man. So stoked you liked it.
Another great episode 🤘
Cheers Legend !
I think the UCI's shortcomings are opening up more opportunities for usdh.
Great episode
Much appreciate. Really stoked you liked it
Classic chat! Love it guys.
Awesome man. Thanks a ton
#holeshot
Excellent interview as always. Keep up the great work, guys 😎🤘🏻.
Cheers !!!!!
Old NORBA days were awesome, so many people involved both on the Pro side and Amateur side. Came back to racing 2 seasons ago after 15 years away and was so surprised and bummed to see how small and underwhelming the race scene is despite SO many more people riding mountain bikes.
Were you at US Open this year tho ?
@@MovingTheNeedlePodcast Not this year, but I raced it last year, and Killington is my home mountain for riding so familiar with the race, it's awesome...bummed to see the Enduro was pulled this year. I also raced the Monster race down in North Carolina in the spring. Awesome to see what Clay and Lars are doing and hopefully we'll see this come full circle again where there is a real series outside of the World Cup. Love to see them be able to put it together with Enduro, and bring back Dual Slalom. 4X was cool, but the old days of, I think, Friday night Slalom at the Norba Nationals with all of the best in the world was awesome to watch, not to mention getting to race on the same courses as all the pros.
@@jadejenny2134 Yes BRING BACK SLALOM. What you say @prodownhillseries
Dropped him a DM 😂😅
There we go ....
Rampage has to decide if it stays true to its roots and reward the sickest gnarliest lines or its going to be joyride in the desert. Right nows its ambiguous at best and has 100% lost its way
Guys... It is what it is, you can't do anything about it. Judges might to know what they've done and what might to be done better.... Grab your bike and go for ride instead of typing upset comments. This sport as any other should be about getting joy of it for most of us isn't it like that
Well Said ..
I’ve got a bum knee and have been on the couch the last couple days, so thank you for the content! Cheers 🍻 from Tennessee
Cheers my man. Appreciate the support
Brendog was the real winner of the even. He has gotten more press then anyone out of this. Always better to be the peoples champion. Rejects the Red Bull like a legend.
The format is bad. It is the corporate bullshit that ruins everything good. They run the numbers and tailwhips are sell the most redbull. Technical lines is what made Rampage rad. It is just a big air show now.
Absolutely we do. Rampage was founded as a freeride big mountain event that was meant to emphasize the most insane, risky and unique lines. Now it's a well groomed slopestyle event. Comparative to the ability of the riders, this new Rampage is boring. I find hardline is far more gnarly with it's tech and enjoyable to watch.
Imagine being bren in 10 years and looking back saying yeah I did all that 👌what a guy!!
