Flinders street station information
Flinders Street railway station is located on the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets in the central business district (CBD) of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
The first ever station on the site opened in 1854 and was merely a collection of weatherboard sheds. The Melbourne Terminus, as it was known, was the first steam rail station in Australia. In 1902, a competition was held for the design of the new building. Work got underway, and was completed in 1910 at an estimated cost of 514,000 pounds. The concourse ran across the Swanston Street end, and ramps dropped down to the platforms. The famous clocks were part of the original design and remain in almost exactly the same spot as they were first placed.
Yarra River
The Yarra River or historically, the Yarra Yarra River is a perennial river in south-central Victoria, Australia.
The lower stretches of the Yarra are where Victoria's state capital Melbourne was established in 1835, and today metropolitan Greater Melbourne dominates and influences the landscape of its lower reaches.
The Yarra River runs for approximately 242kms from Mt Baw Baw, in the Yarra Ranges National Park to its mouth at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay at Newport.
Of the 242km length of the river, just 22km is navigable by boat. The river is relatively narrow and shallow with an average depth approximately 2.5m.
The river was a significant food source and meeting place for indigenous Australians from prehistoric times. The Yarra River was initially called Birrarung by the Wurendjeri people. It is thought that Birrarung is derived from Wurundjeri words meaning “ever flowing”.
The National Gallery of Victoria
The National Gallery of Victoria, popularly known as the NGV, is an art museum in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
The NGV was founded in 1860 with new acquisitions arriving from abroad by sea. It is Australia's oldest and most visited art museum.
The opening of the current NGV International building in 1968, marked the beginning of the Conservation department as it is today. In his building plans, Roy Grounds included a dedicated space for conservation of the collection, an area still occupied by the department today. The new building brought new standards for the preservation and display of art, which coincided with a renewed focus on the care and maintenance of the State’s collections.
Arts Centre Melbourne
Arts Centre Melbourne, originally known as the Victorian Arts Centre and briefly called the Arts Centre, is a performing arts centre consisting of a complex of theatres and concert halls in the Melbourne Arts Precinct, located in the central Melbourne suburb of Southbank in Victoria, Australia.
It was designed by architect Roy Grounds, the masterplan for the complex (along with the National Gallery of Victoria) was approved in 1960 and construction began in 1973 following some delays. The complex opened in stages, with Hamer Hall opening in 1982 and the Theatres Building opening in 1984.
University of Melbourne
The University of Melbourne is a public research university located in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1853, it is Australia's second oldest university and the oldest in Victoria.
The Southbank campus is home to the Victorian College of the Arts, and is situated within Melbourne's creative arts precinct. Sound and dance stages, animation studios, visual arts studios, and cinemas are all located at the university's purpose-built creative arts home.
Weary Dunlop
Colonel Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" Dunlop, 12 July 1907 - 2 July 1993, was an Australian surgeon who was renowned for his leadership while being held prisoner by the Japanese during World War II.
