I bet they have. I never really thought about a hotbox detector. I remember when the railroad used to have problems and had to guy that greased an oil... but I thought that went away.. I love watching trains as long as I'm not sitting in a car waiting on one😊

I was a signalman then a conductor most of my working career. I used to install hot box detectors. They have saved many trains from accidents and derailment. Most hot wheels and axles are caused by vandalism, kids playing on parked train cars and tightening up a handbrake 140 cars deep from the locos. That's why all trains should get a slow roll by ,one crew member on each side before a train leaves the yard on a road trip, make sure there are no sliding wheels...usually it takes 2 detections in a row to stop your train. Then I'd have to walk the entire length of train to find the smoking wheel. Usually they were glowing blue hot. Didn't need to use your melt stick

OH WOW…Something never seen BEFORE...

1 locomotive, a LOT of rail cars. Surely better than a lot of trucks, each with all the motive mechanisms needed to manoeuvre through miles of roads to a given destination. We in the UK tore up 100s of miles of tracks during the Beeching cutbacks, in the 60s I think, then we built more roads Duh. They were supposed to streamline the railway network. Now finally people are wishing they had those tracks so we wouldny need to have hundreds of trucks passing through small villages, wrecking roads that were never designed to carry that sort of continuous load.
