Banned From NEPG and AMA!!
We knew this was coming... Electric bikes asked to not come back for NEPG 2025 Race Season.
#NEPG #starkvarg #banned #bannedtiktok #dirtbikes #racing
"We wanted to make sure that everyone has the information that per AMA rules, you can not compete in a AMA sanctioned event with an electric motorcycle that doesn't have a specific electric motorcycle class.
The NEPG has elected to not have an electric motorcycle class at this time, because most current electric motorcycles do not have enough range to complete our course lengths.
So an electric motorcycle is not allowed to compete in any gas powered class that we offer in the AMA National Enduro Series at this time.
As technology improves, we can evaluate the possibility of adding an electric motorcycle class in the future.
This AMA rule does not apply to the electric mini cycles that can compete with the 50cc auto gas powered bikes, during our youth challenge events."

Stark Varg Sample Day (Single Track)
Pissed since I was interested in it.
Is gncc ama sanctioned?
AMA is making a mistake. Electric bikes should be able to race together with all the others.
Head to head racing like moto or hare scrambles, I get the safety aspect of other riders not being able to hear them.
Shane that is bad news. Riders should be able to bring whatever bike they choose.
Totally agree. Especially in the woods, the e bikes are not some sort of an unfair advantage
All of the governing bodies are too scared to be the ones who let e bikes in and have them start beating gas bikes. They have too much money to make from the factory’s like ktm, Yamaha and Honda etc racing their series . Sooner or later the varg going to be in every top category and will be the dominant bike . Funny that even factory teams are scared of any off the shelf varg
The moment one of the big brands make a halfway decent e bike they will be in.
@ correct
No one will pay to watch electric bike🤷♂️ all classes that went electric, in cars, f1, motogp, don’t sell tickets. Motorsport is gas and noise, that simple
I actually agree. They are pretty boring to watch do moto
Why dont you donate your own time to develope the bikes at these races.
I’m doing my best
I am all for emotos and think they should be allowed to compete in appropriate races. But if the bike cannot complete the course, it shouldn't be on the course. The enduro club running the race should not have the burden of creating a special short course or provide charging stations. They also shouldn't have to deal with dead bikes in the woods that had no chance of making it out. Maybe the emotos need to have multiple batteries that are quick change. Swap them at the gas stops.
I agree actually. It’s not their job to accommodate to a minority for no benefit. The c course typically has the distance that is easily completable.
What is stark saying? I've got a buddy who has a dealership that I'm curious what he would say
Stark has done what they need to do at this point. They are already doing what they needed to get FIM to let them in and restrict them as needed
It's a bummer but, I get it. Not worth the effort for a couple bikes. If they cant make 50miles at race pace to a normal gas stop, battery change, get a gas bike. why should promoters and clubs change everything, just so one or two people want to ride an E bike. JMO
What do they have to change ? They just have so say , yes they can race , and if the range is an issue that’s for the stark riders to worry about not the governing bodies ! Ama and others are scared about them coming in and beating gas bikes….. plain and simple . FIM enduro cross has no weight or power limits and they made stark limit power and add 10 kts to their bike . It’s pathetic, all the people who say electric bikes are shit sure seem scared of them winning
That’s my angle too, they shouldn’t have to go out of their way to accommodate for us. But some of the C course typically are plenty short for them.
I have an Ecoflow Delta pro 3 4000 watt portable power station hooked to 800 W of solar panel that I use for my RV instead of running the generator. But I also use it to charge my Stark and I’m pretty happy with that.
I really wish I had a delta pro 3. They are really nice.
Bummer. Was at a few of those races with ya.. seemed like it was no big deal except for the dead part. All they have to do is shorten it for an e class. We will all be on ebikes soon.
It will take some time but it’s just the 2 stroke 4 stroke debate again
Thank you for sharing this info, a real bummer for another of people. To me this is the evolution of the sport; so it's a real shame
It will take some time but it will get there. Too bad it wasn’t worth the effort for them.
event name checks out, the crew was completely shitwrecked while making this course
Use windex and you can move it around perfectly then heat after you get it set work the middle out wards just a couple tips
Does GNCC allow the Stark in any classes that aren’t E bike classes? Seems it would be an unfair advantage with them being gas and go whereas the combustion bikes have to actually light up and go.
Gncc has an e bike class. I think they start the class on a consolidated row though
@@ShanePinneynot when I raced the Snowshoe GNCC in June. I was the only electric bike on the track and the only one in my line. I think I was row 50 of 125.
In e-bike adversity, there’s opportunity. How about Pinney eRaces Motorcycle Association! Race length designed for e-bikes.
We’re actually using it 🤨
Have you run it in cold weather? Curious how much the range changes
We have, it does hurt it. Probably 5-10% total capacity
@ that’s really not bad at all. Thank you
Sammy just sending the bolts home w the impact 😭😂
Shane! I've been really considering getting the new EX.. I have a few questions! So, I haven't heard anyone through around any range numbers possibly from highway driving (say 55mph?) for distance. (Yeah, I do get because the MX wasn't a road legal model so that wasn't a typical test) I live in Atlanta and often visit buddies out in North GA. It's about 60mi away on the Hwy and I wouldn't mind bringing a charger with me in a backpack if that's doable? Or is it only chargeable from that huge OEM stand charger? I know the EX isn't out yet but 20% added range seems doable? Would a lower power mode also effect range or is it mainly just throttle input? Thanks a ton. Your reply is gonna dictate my purchase btw lol!
Highway speeds is actually probably going to be some of the worst range you can get on one of these things. With 55mph speeds you’d probably be around 30 miles of range on the mx. If you changed some of the gearing you can likely improve that. I can probably get out and go buzz my mx down some back roads and test it at speed but my initial reaction is that it wont be realistic. The charger out of the stand is still fairly big and weighs about 20 pounds.
Hang on to this moment, brother. Hang on and don't ever let it go. it'll be worth more to you in a few years than all the gold and jewels on earth. Cheers from Michigan
Thank you, it’s a special life
Great video! Had may varg for a few weeks and today it lost power and turned off at the track. The bike refused to power back on. bike only has 2 hours of ride time on it, and now it will power on for just a second then shuts itself off with no blinking lights. Does this sound similar to what was happening for you? i contacted stark but still waiting to hear back.
When my battery died it would do nothing. You may have a vcu issue. Hopefully they get you sorted quickly
Where is this
Stillwater Oklahoma
Thx for that. If you have a tip how to flip the stock charger into something more compact than yours this is appreciated. I do not care so much for the extra weight but it should fit into my riding backpack
I’ll make a video soon!
Can you explain or make a video how you built the charger into the milwaukee plastic case? I like to built a small/portable charger I can take with me in my backpack on multi-day rides to charge during breaks or over night…Thx Markus
I plan to make a dedicated video to the charger in the case. The charger itself is still about 20 pounds.
So gnarly
So cool to have the time and funds to travel and do this stuff! The wife commenting and screaming in the mic is unique. The need to overcome all the obstacles on the track, mimics life I guess. The prize being minimal I guess…something about the journey?
So….are you gonna buy an enduro now with 20% more range?
Yep! Hopefully it will be here in march
Nice report/vid. Thanks. Would love to hear more details about the replaced battery/motor. I'm a pretty solid B-/C+ rider and the occasional Hare Scramble (usually about 8-10 miles per lap, and depending on difficulty, I can do 3 or 4 laps on my 350) and one or two sprint-enduros - last one was about 30 miles per lap, with 3 test sections per lap, withg about 90 minute break between laps.
It depends on your terrain style but at your pace and racing structure you’d likely finish hare scrambles with using around 15%-20 a lap.
nice! what do you think, would you have done better with a combustion bike?
I likely would have done better on a two stroke. I would have likely rode the same on a four stroke
Wow, you did well considering the course. I crave the thrill of a fast flowing single track, very fast flowing 2-track, desert creek washes, and I like hill climbs too... but that is deffinitley not my thing.
That course looks absolutely horrible.
Sadly I’ll be back next year hahah
What the heck?
It made for a long day
That course looks horrible. Designed by a saddist. Well done.
He’s definitely one to make some funny courses.
I'm a fairly fast rider, owned a street legal 2018 Alta MXR for 3 years. Put 250 hours on it. Crashed it at least 100 times, a few of them hard. In all that time I never had ONE SINGLE ISSUE. Literally nothing. Same chain, sprockets, etc...Not one mechanical part broke, never serviced the suspension, no fork leaks. The ONLY things I did to it were change brake pads once and the gear oil twice. That thing ran like a champ. Fast as heck, nimble as can be. Looked brand new still when I sold it last month. Only reason I sold it was I wasn't getting the range I was getting early on. So I decided to buy a Stark. So far I feel like I'm regretting it. I'm hearing nothing but nightmare stories about these bikes, eveyrone's seems to be breaking in 10 different ways. Afer a couple rides on the Stark I was dismayed to find that it does not handle as well as the Alta does and it's VERY HARD to loft the front wheel. My Alta woudl loft the front wheel in the lowest power mode no problem. Not this stark, you have to yank hard. I also kill the battery in the sandy woods in 35-40 minutes, like 13-15 miles. That was a major disapointment. All this talk about guys getting 30 miles and hours of riding. yeah right. No offense but you all must be kinda slow.
So you’re getting an hour and a half of charge and then recharging for 2 hours using a generator running on… gas? Haven’t we just come full circle?
Yea if you think about it that way. I am not too worried about being green or anything like that
@@ShanePinney Fair enough!
Is that Brandon
Yes it is
Didn't start say the EX has 20% more range? Hence, would this not be sufficient for you to move back to electric vs the 350?
I’m going to go with an Ex. We will see how it goes
Thank you for the video!
You're welcome!
1:48 WHAT WAS THAT??? Good Lord get them off the bikes
I would need to carry a generator on my back or maybe on a rack for my 130 mile off road days and over night rides.
Yep and that isn’t realistic. It will be a long time before an e-bike can do that
Thanks for another video! Are you a wheelie guy on that bike? I guess your hard enduro skills are there too. The fall risk on big logs crossing are no joke. I’m Interested in your longer term biking goals, if you care to share those. Cheers
I’m working on circle and slow wheelies. I’m more of a go fast woods guy. I’m doing a hard enduro tomorrow hopefully it goes okay
I‘m in europe. Since the app update I‘m limited to 2.1kWh of charging even when I connect to an 16A outlet. The app does not let me select 3.3kWH charging. Do you know how to change that?
There was a problem they had with charging cords/connectors there and they reduced it for safety. Send stark an email, I thought they had a solution for that already
@ I did send them an email, but they said they can‘t do anything at the moment. They just told me to always update. Kind of sucks, but maybe they will update again to fix it.
It’s Amy’s bike 😂
Great video. Subscribed since you are so close to your 1,000 subscriber milestone (actually, thought I already was. Ha.) A lot of great points in this video. Basically, the bike will charge twice as fast on 240v as it will on 120v, which is something to keep in mind no matter if you charger off a power station, generator or house circuit. It is handy to be able to set the charge rate via the app. That way, if you have a smaller generator, you can dial it down. Or, just not in a hurry and want to slow charge it (better for battery especially in the heat). Or, if you are using a power station with solar and want to charge slowly over a few days. Also handy when you are charging on a 120v house circuit with shared outlets and you don't want to trip the breaker because something else is charging on the circuit. Keep in mind, on a house circuit, best practice is only running constant load of 80% on your circuit. Meaning, if you have a 120v 20amp circuit (2,400watts), you can draw a constant load of 1,920watts. If you are only on a 15amp 120v circuit (1,800watts), 80% is only 1,440watts. And that is if the Varg charge is the only load on that circuit. That reduces if you have other things drawing on the circuit at the same time. Also note the efficiency losses of the charger. If the bike is charging at 1,600watts on a 120v circuit, it will draw more than 1,600 from the outlet. I ran mine off a 120v power station for a quick 30 minute bump while trail riding one day, but have since forgotten how much it drew when the app was set at the fastest 120v setting (1,600watts). I don't recall if it was putting 1,600watts into the battery and drawing more (1,700 - 1,800 watts) or if it was drawing 1,600watts and so only putting 1,400 - 1,500 watts into the bike. I think the former. You mentioned your your 280ah battery is 2,800Wh, but it calculates out to 3,584Wh. Still barely over half of the 6.5kWh Varg battery and, like you said, half or less once you include charger inefficiencies. Thanks for the video and good luck on the subscriber count!
What kind of chain do you run? The bikes comes with sort of thin o-ring with a fixed chain link. I was thinking to run 2 wheels (one for harder and one for softer sand), but I cannot easily replace the chain... In MX I have always had these chain link which clips to hold the link in place.
We are running the stock chain. You can run other chains with an aftermarket chain guide. The stock guide will run with most other chains
Maybe there is any chance to charge bike directly from car charging station?
Maybe in the future, but even the upcoming Varg EX dual sport doesn't have that feature. There is a chance you could rig some type of adapter to use a Level 2 charger since they are 240v AC, but the fast chargers are DC chargers so those will never work unless you get very creative is wiring up a DC/DC charger to push the exact DC voltage needed to the battery and that would bypass the Stark app.
Great info to have! I've been trying to plan out a new generator, as I only have a Predator 2000. Its good to know that even though the 5000 is more watts, it caps out at 1800 as well since its only 110v.
Glad I could help. You technically could use the step up converter with the 5000 predator
I’ll be interested to see if the EX has better range. They say it’s supposed to…but we’ll see.
