Thanks for the kind words:) Unfortunately this patch will never be compatible with the official scummvm, since it works EXCLUSIVELY with an ALTERED version of that engine (that means with SCUMMVMX). Otherwise the asset switching for the VGA version of the game would never be possible. The ScummVMX engine is available among the links in the description of the youtube clip above (basic version) or among the comments here (extended version for KQ4Amiga). Have fun while playing! :)

There are 2 options. If you want a classic KQ4 VGA Talkie Patch (to be bundled with any version of the game), apart from the patch file, you’ll also need a ScummvmX interpreter. Both links along with detailed instructions are available in the description of the youtube movie clip, directly underneath it. The other option is an extended KQ4VGA Talkie and Music Patch which works ONLY with the Amiga version of the game and is available here in the comments section (along with a different version of ScummVMX). Just do not mix up both versions of the patch or the game will crash. Have fun!

Hi!:) I keep updating the files from time to time, so I’m here alright:). The Steam version should definitely work! But only in case of the basic patch (the one mentioned under the video). There is also another patch available here - the enhanced talkie&music patch with links in the comments section - but this one can only be bundled with amiga version of the game, otherwise it’ll crash.

I closed and reopened the game and it let me move around but not type so I found the comment about getting the Amiga game version from CD Romance. At first I thought that wouldn't work cause I didn't have a way to install it but I tried adding the game and just using the download folder in the scrum engine and now it works. Yay!

Hi! Great! I wanted to suggest that you read other comments, since this problem kind of rings a bell. I remember that someone encountered it and subsequently found a solution. This may be an issue with some copies of PC version, but evidently not with all of them. Anyway! I’m glad the problem is solved!:) Have fun!

Well, it wasn’t the last update in the end, but the current version is to such an extent satisfactory from my perspective, that I am not planning to make any more changes at the moment. If you played the version which is a few months old, I recommend you to redownload the patch, since there have been numerous alterations, mainly in the graphics department (on the Island of Genesta in particular), so that the game looks and feels more coherent.

Just did the same with the DOS version. Same issues, have sound but no graphics. The console indicates missing files (music) which I got from the second download. When they are in the extra folder or in the main folder still not found.

Hi. To tell you the truth, I’ve never tried to run the patch on Windows 11, so theoretically this might be the reason of your troubles. Isn’t there any option of running scummvmx under windows 10 compatibility mode? It might solve the problem. Also make sure that you are NOT mixing up the contents of both Kq4vga patches. The first one (in the description below the youtube movie clip) is intended for both PC and Amiga versions of KQ4, while the second one (available in the comments section) is exclusively for Amiga. Even if you are running only the Amiga Version of the game, you cannot experiment and interchange the files since the interpreters which accompany the different versions of patches are not the same and thus unable to read all the files appropriately. The scummvm console will ALWAYS indicate missing files, so that doesn’t necessarily mean that something is missing from the patch. The music should be there independent of the version of the game or of the patch you are using. The tracks available in the second patch just switch the music from Amiga version for the one from PC version (with slight tweaks). Another issue related to the patch not being read by the ScummVm console is when you have both - the original official ScummVM and the altered version of ScummVMX installed on your PC. If you click on the wrong icon- you may accidentaly run the official version of the interpreter and despite adjusting all the settings correctly, the patch won’t load. Another problem may occur when you create 2 extra folders inside one another while unpacking the patch (the extra path in the settings would then lead not to the files directly, but to another Extra folder (…)/Extra/Extra). I’d suggest you to make sure that none of the issues indicated above occur in your case. If the problem persists, then the reason may in fact be the version of your operating system, but to tell you the truth, never before has anyone had a similar problem here and I sincerely doubt that everybody is using windows 10 or below. But I may be mistaken. ;).

@@jerzygrzechnik6429- Thanks for the quick reply. The issue was "step 4" - you MUST highlight the game, go to the last tab in the ScummVM launcher "Paths" and select set the "Extra Path" to the Extra folder embedded in the game files. With that the new game assets load.

Hello. :) You don’t need to have the amiga version of the game if you wanna check out the VGA Talkie patch. Gog PC version of KQ4 will do nicely. The Amiga version is only needed for the second VGA Talkie and Music patch (link available here in the comments section) provided that you additionally want to hear the ambient sounds in the game.

Thank you so much, for your kind words. :) To tell you the truth such an issue with intro ceaselessy repeating itself and not being able to enter the game is something I’ve never encountered while working on the patch. Other players didn’t seem to have had this problem either. Usually pressing esc skips the intro and starts the first playable section of the game. Are you absolutely sure that you’ve followed all my instructions step by step while installing the patch? Are you using the basic patch from the description under the video or the most recent speech & music VGA patch which was provided by me in the comments section? Have you tried to reinstall the game and the patch along with it? Which version of the game are you playing? PC or Amiga version? Are you sure that you’ve launched the scummmVMX interpreter and not the standard ScummVM? Please let me know.

@@jerzygrzechnik6429 Thank you for responding so quickly! I was able to figure it out- I was using the DOS version instead of the Amiga version. I downloaded the Amiga version off of CDRomance, and then launched it but it still had the original graphics, then I realized that this time I forgot to take the Extra folder out of the first Extra folder (if that makes sense), and now it works great! Just putting this here in case anyone has either of those issues. Also, I NEVER would've guessed you're not a native English speaker; you're voice acting sounds great, you should be proud!

@@Lixxie612Thank you so much! :) This project was my labour of love and recording the lines brought me a lot of fun, so I’m really glad it shows. ;) The whole patch wouldn’t have been brought to fruition if it hadn’t been for the hard work of all the fan groups attempting to remake KQ4, of course. Although I had to do numerous alterations to the screens, it is mostly their work when it comes to VGA graphics. I hope you’ll have fun while playing!:)

You must have done something wrong. Try to repeat the process from scratch step by step, according to the instructions given here. And do not forget to use the scummVMX interpreter from the link provided in the description above. Good luck!

Hi! Unfortunately the only engine that this patch will work with is scummvmX (a modified version of scummvm). The link can be found under the video. But it’s exclusively for PC. No OSX version available I’m afraid… :(

No :) Just kidding. You actually can turn the voices off. Just edit the game profile in the ScummVMX , go to the Audio Tab and choose subtitles.

Yes, it should work fine with GOG Version. The ambient sounds will be absent from the game though, since GOG distributes PC version of KQ4 only (and ambient sounds can only be heard in Amiga Version). But music and speech will be there ;)

@@pascalswartjes1878no, unfortunately it’s impossible. The only way to make the ambient sounds work is to play the amiga version of Kq4 via this scummvmx interpreter. The pc version of the game doesn’t even search for the sound files (and this vga patch attaches itself to the engine of the original game - so the mechanics depend on the version you are running). BUT you can on the other hand get the pc background music going WHILE playing the Amiga version of kq4. You can do it only if you download the second patch (kq4vga talkie and music patch) which is available here in one of the comments. That patch however is not fully stable (some glitches pop up here and there).

That’s what I wanted to suggest. I have compiled the whole patch under Windows 10, so it must have been an issue either related to the version of the game or to some missing files in your operating system. Glad you finally managed to run the game. Have fun!:)

@@davonc7973 Unfortunately this won't happen. That was the reason I came up with this patch in the first place. BUT I have a nagging feeling that Infamous Adventures may have something in store when it comes to KQ4VGA... Time will tell.. ;) AND we cannot forget that there is still the KQ4VGA semi 3D Project in the works (by Unicorn Tales).

I wish someone would. Hell i love a police quest ii remake but that was scrapped a long time ago smh 🤦

That's what I'm trying to get lol I have 5 6 n 7 with voices and enhanced graphics but I'm having issues getting 1 - 4...

@@justbplz How’s that? 1-3 KQ remakes by AGD Interactive are available in the net free of charge (the 3-rd having also been remade by Infamous Adventures). And to get the 4-th one all you have to do is to buy the original EGA game from GoG for example, patch it up with this KQ4VGA Talkie patch and VOILA - you’ll have the whole saga in VGA and with voices! ;)

Myles Johnston’s ScummVMX has been altered to make it possible to swap the original assets from SCI Sierra Games for the new ones. This KQ4VGA Patch can thus introduce changes in terms of graphics/music/voices to the original King’s Quest 4. There’s unfortunately no such an option in the regular ScummVM engine.

@@videomaster412 You mean the latest version of ScummVMX? It’s on GitHub, but it has not been updated for 2 years and it is much more bugged than the one that is available here under the video. So basically, the version of ScummVMX that you can download alongside KQ4VGA Talkie and Music Patch is the latest and at the most stable one. There is also an earlier version available here (which can be bundled with KQ4VGATalkie Patch). Any other version apart from these 2, makes the game crash.

@@jerzygrzechnik6429 The game has one great flaw. The mouse marker goes very slowly in the game, but then again, (since I got a PC not an Amiga).

@@videomaster412 actually, the mouse pointer does not come in handy in this game (apart from going up or down the stairs or walking on a mountain ledge). Keyboard arrows are much more useful.;)

Hi! It is indeed quite impressive! But to tell you the truth, I have a soft spot for pixel art and that is why I even downgraded some of the backgrounds here in terms of quality to make them more pixelated and at the same time more coherent with the rest (don’t tell anyone) ;). The art in this VGA Patch is not entirely consistent, since it comes from under a “pen” of a bunch of different artists. But that’s actually the point! By taking this initiative and making this VGA Patch, I wanted to pay tribute to their hard work, which basically never led to any final release of a remake. So all in all, the pixels are something that makes this patch even more “90s like”… I guess I’m kind of sentimental.

Hi! Thanks a lot for your kind words! Ok. So I’ve had this problem once. It is probably related to the scummvmx engine and/or some alterations it may have erroneously made in the code of your copy of the game. I’m not a programmer, so I’m just guessing… ;) Have you tried redownloading scummvmx and reinstalling the game? In my case it did the trick. You must first erase all the versions of the engine and all the copies of your kq4 from your harddisk and once again go through the whole process of installation described here. @@jubito1000 I’ve sent you an email. There was one gamer here, who had the same problem as you. In the end, he found another copy of Kq4, which solved the problem for him. Maybe that’s the way out, if the error keeps popping up…

Thanks! I know KQ4Retold perfectly well. Unfortuately it’s not compatible with ScummVMX, so my patch won’t work with it…

I solved the crash issue by downloading files from another source, but they were ADFs and had to be extracted and joined together in a single folder.

Thanks for your kind words, @Hiri Otapa! :) It indeed took me quite a while to complete all the recording sessions, especially if you consider the fact that I’m not a native and that this game wasn’t initially designed to have voice-overs. This meant that I had to check out all the possible solutions by typing in even the most absurd commands. (I’m not sure if I came across all of them though). When it comes to the error you mentioned, it popped up once while I was working on this patch, but reinstalling the game along with the scummvmx engine got rid of the problem in my case.

Thank you! :) If you want to update your original EGA version of King’s Quest IV to the VGA Talkie, all you have to do is to follow the instructions in the commentary under the video. Many people do not read that section at all and they are not aware that this patch is actually available for download here.

@@jerzygrzechnik6429 I have tried it out and you have done a great job. I am used to the old system with text parser and it is enjoyable to play like that because it has been years since I have. My kids getting to know this awesome game series aren't used to writting in games and english isn't our main language, So the newer and remade point and click games are a good fit for them. There is a KQ4 remake with point and click, KQ4retold but with the ega graphics. Oh if these two games could be easily combined. 😄

I’m glad that all the months of hard work have paid off and most of all I’m deeply grateful to the fan groups who have provided the resources for me to dig into. The text parser is inevitable, since while using this patch we are still playing the original game with swapped graphics and added spoken text. The KQ4 Retold is actually a new game made from scratch with a different engine and altered script, so the resources from this patch would probably not fully match that game anyway. Today I have once again updated the Extra folder, so I recommend downloading it and overwriting the old one. Hope you’ll enjoy the whole game!

UPDATE - in March 2024 the patch was updated once more, so the aforementioned video does not show the current version anymore. The fact that it's only me giving voice to those characters, makes it quite hard to introduce many variations and subtleties of interpretation of their lines, but if I'll see what I can do. @cyberdalekyeti This patch works ONLY with the original SCI Version of KQ4. It's determined by Myles Johntson's SCUMMVMX engine. Additionally I recommend the Amiga version of KQ4 (with ambient sounds and more wavetable-like music), which was used as a base, upon which I built the VGA patch. Other versions (for PC) have different variations in graphics (for example bushes and trees appear in different areas), so the VGA screens may not always correspond to the priority maps in them.
