    As a trim carpenter I can attest that many time RO’s are too big/small / off center or insufficient space allowed for specific casing. I can only assume framers are not to bright.

      Less shims and more screw/nail embedment.

    • @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint
      @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint Місяць тому

      When a door is installed, it’s typically tight to the hinge side jamb right? If you have a tight space where you want the revile to be the same on both sides once all trim is done this is one reason why you do this.

  • @dennisbrinkley8613

    Seriously this is overdue for improvement. Door construction is junk. Door installation methodology is not much better. Lasers and better equipment galore. Yet , the tolerance is 2”? Unacceptable in the automobile industry. Why is the construction industry refrain “It’s not the end of the world.”

    • @anthonyrodrigues5032
      @anthonyrodrigues5032 Місяць тому

      Soldi point. Yet for impact windows and doors you typically can't go over a 1/4 of an inch. I always add plywood to tighten up my rough opening to interior doors. You get less shims, better screw and nail embedment. I also like to nail the hinge side of doors straight into the framing if it's level, makes life easier

    • @mattheworoark1459
      @mattheworoark1459 Місяць тому

      It’s OSB that is effectively being used as one giant shim. The door jamb and casing will cover all that up.

    • @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint
      @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint Місяць тому

      Yes, @mattheworoark1459 is 100% absolutely correct.

    • @wll1500
      @wll1500 Місяць тому

      Bro, it's framing. Makes absolutely no difference to structural integrity, all it's doing is setting the rough opening to the correct width to make it easier to install the prehung door.

  • @TS-yf2zf
    @TS-yf2zf Місяць тому

    Door frame openings are supposed to be larger than the door as nothing is ever square so it allows for corrections by the finish carpenter

    • @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint
      @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint Місяць тому

      You are correct but they are supposed over framed by 2" total of the total door opening. Meaning, a 2' 8" door should be framed in at 34". When it starts to get larger than this, the trim carpenters have to pack in too many shims. Shims can split and break apart later as there is movement and fall out especially when they are packed in with too many of them. This is where we want to get the opening correct when we are framing. It's not the end of the world because a good trim carpenter can usually get it right but if you have the framers there and they know what to do, its a good idea to get them to get the opening corrected at that point. Another reason for it is that if you are in a tighter area, you want that door to line up evenly. If your opening is 1" larger, the carpe terns will typically go flus to the hinge side and pack out the other side. This will make the space in this opening where the casing is, uneven. Hope this helps.

      @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint I would purposely frame them bigger, it makes it easier to put the door in but I'm not a pro by any means

    • @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint
      @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint 2 місяці тому

      @@ItsCritiyou do frame them bigger but you don’t want them to be too big. Then you have to add too much filler (shims) and it’s better to be more solid.

    • @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint
      @TheHomeBuildingBlueprint 2 місяці тому

      Agreed but if they miss the joist on a few you can still get squeaking. We screw as well before flooring goes down. Framers glue and nail with ring shank and then flooring contractors screw it. A lot depends on the product and price range if it fits in the budget. You’re not going to put level 4 granite in a low end home but you will in a high end home.
