    Mine has yellowed 10 years ago, despite stored dark in a box. Something that needs to be improved is the original fist slide and lock design. It's kinda rough.

    Real nice job! I was already thinking of nickel plating until you mentioned it wouldn't work. I wonder if it was the aluminum component in the alloy. But still, just with sanding the metal pieces looked fantastic!

      Yeah, even with plating it in “flash copper” beforehand the results were not great, and I’ve tried numerous times. The finish you can get with polishing is almost as good and lacquer/clear coat Can preserve it for a long while

    Wonderful video! How do you fix a loose backpack? Mine flops down in robot mode. Thanks so much!

    • @g1restorations226
      @g1restorations226 3 роки тому

      That’s a common issue. I’ve actually had luck by simply tightening the screws in the backpack, which seems to help compress the plastic around the hinge. I’ve also used my air gun to force pledge floor polish into the hinge itself. Although you could probably just drip it in and get the same result.

    • @johntran3797
      @johntran3797 3 роки тому

      @@g1restorations226 Appreciate the quick reply. Noticed a small tab on the back pack at the hinge area. Does that help add friction to keep the backpack in place? Can you please check on your Jetfire? Noticed mine is worn and there is a bigger gap (tab bent). Searched online. No answer, but many similar questions. Also, do you have any new Jetfire vids? Thanks again!

    Very nice! I repainted a Bandai reissue of the Valkrie after retrobriting. I never would have thought about filing off the casting marks on the metal pieces. I've recently played around with nickel plating, so I think if I were to do another one, I'll add that step as well.

      Now there’s an idea...

    • @g1restorations226
      @g1restorations226 4 роки тому

      I was interested in nickle plating already and your comment encouraged me to pull the trigger. I got all the materials and followed the steps and... nothing. The metal just built up a black gunk. Turns out dye cast metal is very difficult to plate. It can be done, but requires “Copper Flash” and a few other steps. I’m not quite at that point yet but may play around with it down the line.

    • @lemonherb1
      @lemonherb1 4 роки тому

      Have you tried to use some polish afterwards? I'm getting some mixed results with some items, but I find the black residue comes off with metal polish. I've recently plated a die cast floppy disk notcher, and it turned out not too bad

    • @Davesobscurevideos
      @Davesobscurevideos 4 роки тому

      @@lemonherb1 I have polished them but there didn’t seem to be any plating when i cleaned them up. From my understanding, that black gunk is the actual nickle that doesn’t quite make it on to the metal. Are you confident that your finished piece indeed has a layer of nickle on it when you’re done?

    • @lemonherb1
      @lemonherb1 4 роки тому

      I'm pretty sure. However it was originally zinc plated. Much of that original plating had worn off. I know the voltage and amperage also has an impact. I was running at around 5V 1A for most of that process. The disk notcher is also rather large as well
