    Where are all the cutters? Were they all checked for weight and damage. As fast as that spins it would not take much to get it out of balance.

    I buiilt most of Jenkins drive shafts early Seventies . All just shortened OEM's . Never saw one out of phase . Of course not a large sample ,,, !

      I hear you , it's not real common . For me its been spread across 40yr of building & repairs and it's a very informal survey at that . Some time in the 90's it dawned on me that I had an old Camaro shaft in the shop for work before an it was out phase also . Since then I bet I have seen at least a couple dozen ... usually Camaro related as far as I can remember .

    1310 and 3" tube for a pickup? Why isn't it 1350 with 3-1/2" tube?

    • @austinmachine6622
      @austinmachine6622 Місяць тому

      1310 series was pretty much standard back then in 1/2 T trucks across all the brand's for many years except Dodge . The OE rear axle is still in the truck w/a 1310 yoke and that's what he wanted to continue to run and 3" x.083 tube is the go to size for a shaft with that ctr to ctr joint length . The OE driveshaft was probably 2 3/4' x.065

    Some of the old two-piece small diameter truck shafts were made out of phase. When rebuilding them, we would put them in phase. I spent a few years building and repairing shafts. I dont remember running across and car shafts that were out of phase.

    • @austinmachine6622
      @austinmachine6622 Місяць тому

      Agreed , I never weld them out of phase . I don't know if the Camaro thing is sloppy work showing up 50yrs later or something they tried for a period of time but I have seen more that a few as time has gone by

    I've seen about a dozen I think. Couple of factory-out-of-phase Fords mixed in there too. But yeah, mostly Chevy. I did have a guy try to tell me "No, it's supposed to be like that! It's a Big Block thing!" "No sir. That's a 'wrong' thing."

    Nice job! Is that just bay#2?

    • @austinmachine6622
      @austinmachine6622 2 місяці тому

      Yes it is Bay 2 by choice . Because of how they are located and how small the penstock box & generator room are we elected to do that one first for best accessibility . They are identical twins ... and Bay 1's head frame & metal work is 93%(est) done . We are going to hook this one to the grid and run it and prove it out for a while . Running this one will show us if we need to make any changes.... if so we will do them and sort it all out before we instal Bay 1 .

    • @austinmachine6622
      @austinmachine6622 2 місяці тому

      That's a brand new dodge gear box commonly used on aggregate conveyors . Their engineering dept gave my planned usage for that gear box their blessing in that exact configuration. That aside, my personal experience has seen them be virtually indestructible & last decades on a gravel pit screening plant w/no maintenance . Time will tell . Not so sure I'm in love with the cogged gillmer belt honestly ... don't be too surprised if you see us test a pair of V belts to see if can quiet it down some . The generators were before and will remain belt drive. They were refreshed because they had been sitting for years and years . There were no outstanding issues with them ... bearings included .

    • @austinmachine6622
      @austinmachine6622 3 місяці тому

      Ok thanks for the suggestion…of course you must mean I have to buy more of them then ? Ok …Sounds good to me I’m a tool whore . At last count I have 8 different shapes & sizes of Starrett and 1 Lufkin and 1 of another brand I don’t remember name of machinist levels to use for for machine shop stuff which is on the other side of my shop . The Stanley & the hardware store angle finder is perfectly good for show & tell videos and gets the point across and not a disaster if it gets knocked on the floor.

    The use of a variable strobe light would allow you to see the position of parts fixed in space. Actually see what is happening. Is runout checked right a the collet chuck to ensure it's actually concentric?

    • @austinmachine6622
      @austinmachine6622 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment but No thanks …I had them old junk strobe light Stewart Warners 30 + yrs ago….this PTI balancer is LIGHT YEARS ahead of them vague old bones ever hoped to be . I’m a fussy machinist my equipment is accurate and 100% tuned up . It’s not a collet chuck there is a balanced 6 jaw on both ends.

    Yes it’s common to have a double Cardan one one end and a single joint on the other end. Just about every domestic full size 4x4 front drive shaft was set up that way from the late 60’s and still to modern day in Ford & Dodge .

  • @jadney
    @jadney 3 місяці тому

    Is it normal to have the double Cardan CV on one end and the single Cardan on the other? I'm not that familiar with drivelines, but I thought you always needed Cardans in pairs, properly phased. If that's correct, a single Cardan at each end seems like it would be better, as long as they are phased correctly and the angles at each end are equal. None of this is a problem when the driveline is in a straight line, as it's being tested in this video.

When he showed up it was with a 9” Ford axle for his friend that I narrowed and rebuilt the center section (see vid #394) when he brought the axle in to be worked on ,we talked about this driveshaft and another one he needed which I already built.

    I don't see where calling out poor workmanship is a bad thing. Except for the balance weights, I would have guessed that it was a homemade piece. I'd be embarrassed if I were a professional putting out that caliber of work.

      Yes it’s very old machine shop trick . What’s shown here is not a good example of how to go about it . It’s one of those things that’s more art than science … you have to have the feel” or have the “touch” as my old time machinist mentor told me when I was a kid 50yrs ago.

    There is no doubt that is a second or even third or worse hand driveshaft. The welds at the rear are a good clue. So is the paint job. That will vibrate like hell at higher speeds. Might be ok for a purely off road vehicle that doesn't go above 15 mph.
