Exploring Faith Perspectives, Theological Camps & Queer Theology - Dr. Hanna Reichel
In this episode, Dr. Hanna Reichel, an associate professor of Reformed Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, shares their exploration of theology, faith, and social justice. Their upbringing in Germany, where their parents served as Lutheran ministers, provided them with a global faith perspective, emphasizing the interplay between the universal nature of theology and its diverse cultural expressions. Dr. Reichel’s experiences in both Catholic and Protestant contexts shed light on the challenges posed by doctrinal differences within religious communities.
The conversation extends to the intersection of theology with politics, economics, and social justice, with a particular focus on supporting LGBTQ+ individuals within religious settings. Dr. Reichel also discusses their book, “After Method: Queer Grace, Conceptual Design, and the Possibility of Theology,” and explores the metaphor of design theory in understanding theology’s impact on the world. The episode concludes with insights into the weaponization of the doctrine of sin and queer theological perspectives on solidarity, providing a thought-provoking journey through these complex themes in today’s society.

Social & Ethical Concerns of Liberation Theology in Latin America

WORKS OF LAW = religious traditions & FAITH IN CHRIST = Obedience to the Torah of YHVH. This is Shaul simplified: We are saved by OBEDIENCE TO THE TORAH OF YHVH and not by RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS because by RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS no man will be justified, but only by OBEDIENCE TO THE TORAH OF YHVH.

You're completely wrong. Jesus was very explicit about eternal punishment. Look at Mat. 25:46. It's not the terminology that's important, it's the reality of being separated from God - by choice - forever.

Nah, just as with the 1st bodily death, at “the second death”, Rev 20:14, the soul dies, perishes. So does hell and 1st death. Death means death, not living eternally… Rev 20:13-15 That’s why the saying goes ”be born once & die twice, or be born twice and die once” paraphrasing. God’s promise, ”ye shall surely die”… they don’t live forever (in torment or not). That’s the devil’s original lie: ”Ye shall not surely die”

So the videos here on youtube about "hell" being a fiery pit are, to put it politely, untrue? Some people even say that they saw Jesus in "hell", judging people. There are so many contradictions on youtube that one knows not who to believr.

@@johnheaton5058Hell is not eternal. It gets emptied of ”all the dead in it” in Rev 20:13… in verse 14 hell and 1st death are cast into the Lake of Fire, ”this is the second death”, meaning 1st death and hell are destroyed, so how could hell be eternal? And what would be the point when it’s empty, serving no purpose any longer? Nah, eternal hell is a heresy against God’s promise ”ye shall surely die”, and is actually Satan’s original lie, “you will not surely die”. The wages of sin is death. Death is the punishment, not eternal life (in torment or not). Death still means death.

32:47 According to Rabbinic tradition Jonah did die. Comparing this event with Jonah of a Literal event, to other prophets metaphorical events does a disservice to the text. When David is running from Saul, or feeling betrayed by Joab, he is not literally dying. Jonah is sinking to the depths of the Sea. He is literally dying. A human can only servive maybe 2 minutes holding their breath. A human can only survive how many feet below water, before the pressure kills them. We dismiss the idea of Jonah dying because we think how can a human body pray, when the body is dead. But it is the soul that is praying. The soul speaks in ways we cannot understand. In the same breath we dismiss praying because someone is in death. We also acknowledge Jesus speaks to the dead in Sheoul. How can the dead in Sheoul hear Jesus, but Jonah in Sheoul cannot speak to Got. In Eclesiastes Solomon says the dead have no impact on the living. But that has nothing to do with the Spiritual Realm.

It’s crazy how loud some churches have their music. Do non-autistic people love having their eardrums blasted? I also hate when we have to shake hands. Firstly… gross. A large percentage of people don’t wash their hands. It’s a great way to spread germs. Secondly… what good does it do to say hi to 6 or so different people in about 2 minutes? What is accomplished?

Gehenna is much more complicated than just a dump outside Jerusalem. Jews of that day, and Jews today too, saw it as a place of punishment in the afterlife. For Jews it is more of a purgatory of 12 months max. So Jews do not mourn for loved ones past 11 months, because that'd be dishonoring father and mother to say they were evil enough to deserve the max punishment. In Jesus' day, it wasn't as clear how long it would be, or if someone could be annhilated completely. Some rabbis thought the very evil would never leave gehenna, either being tormented forever, like later views of hell, or to be annhilated. They used Jerusalem as a symbol of heaven or peace with God in a holy place, so being thrown "outside the gates" to a place of separation meant punishment, so they chose a literal place outside the gates, the valley of gehenna, to symbolize it. Confusing. But people who believe in eternal hell could make a case Jesus meant a permanent gehenna. Those who believe in universalism or annihlationism could also have good cases to make, since the idea of gehenna was a pretty fluid symbol at that time. I will agree that to just translate it as "hell" is pretty misleading. It's a word that should probably not be translated since it has so much additional meaning to it and translating it would be a theological decision. Could just as easily translate it 'purgatory.'

Respect for Tom Wright. Rightly so, the world rejects the political and religious facades of Western belief and expression. Modernity was/is detached from spiritual reality... the crucified, risen, and indwelling Christ Jesus. Watching folks "go East" (tho it too is hollow) makes sense as they find the "West" living out the decline of bankrupt materialism and moralism. Sadly, being truly "spiritual" has been hijacked by monism and mysticism. The Christian-religious response (i.e. sectarian Christian thought) is to lump all those who emphasize "being spiritual" as monists, gnostics, etc. Here's to finding true spirituality in Jesus alone as expressed here... "Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?-unless indeed you fail to meet the test!" (2Cor13:5) This reality... indwelling of Jesus, divine life restored and manifest in human function... is the DIVIDING LINE between authentic spirituality and Christian-religion. Anything other or less than an INDWELLING CHRIST, is moralism and walking according to the Flesh.

What the Bible says is upon death, we undergo corruption and become dust once more. If our name is found in the book of life, we will be resurrected at the trumpet call for the resurrection of the begotten, to an indestructible body and rewards as the Lord sees fit. We will rule and reign with Yeshua for 1000 years. If our name is not in the book of life, we will continue to be in the grave until we are resurrected for judgment. At which time we will be given a new body, and personally undergo God’s judgment of our life.

Need a longer clip here because if that is all there is of this discussion, that is a very poor etymological breakdown. Need the etymology of the word hell as well and why that word was chosen to translate gehenna. This also needs a larger discussion on other sayings of Jesus, like: "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." I've read from the early church fathers and there didn't appear to be major theological differences between the writings of Augustine, Origen, Tertullian, from people like Polycarp, Irenaus, John Crystosom. The differences they expressed were just minor positions of how to follow the text properly, the only things that could be considered major disagreement is whether Jesus was fully God and one with the father. Tertullian was condemned as a heretic because he believed in subordinationism that Jesus was not coequal to the Father, this was a position that was likely proto-Arianism which became a major force in the third century and was voted against by the bishops of the Council of Nicea, with a couple earlier synods condemning it as well. Augustine and Origen also didn't believe in a literal interpretation of the garden of Eden, as far as I know they were the only church fathers would held to that position, and that's a controversial position for some people except for theistic evolutionists.
