BTD010 - Philip Röder: Pick Yourself, Coaching Music Producers, Growth Mindset, Authenticity
In this episode of Beyond the Decks, Robert connects with Philip Röder, founder of Pick Yourself and a multifaceted figure in electronic music who has dedicated himself to empowering artists through education and authentic storytelling. From his early roots in punk rock to becoming a respected music producer, mixing and mastering engineer, Philip's journey represents a unique blend of technical expertise, authentic self discovery and artist advocacy.
Philip's path is marked by a transformative shift from marketing professional to full-time mixing and mastering engineer, driven by a disappointing studio experience during his time as a touring punk rock artist. Through his "Finish Your Framework" methodology and artist coaching, he has helped countless producers navigate the complexities of music production and industry relationships. This conversation explores his philosophy on authentic brand building, the importance of direct fan communication, and the power of collaboration over competition.
In this episode we cover:
- Importance of having a supportive label for artist growth and success
- The significance of honesty and transparency in the music industry
- The impact of mental health on artistic pursuits and the importance of seeking help
- Empowering artists to understand the music industry and make informed decisions
- The role of authenticity and vulnerability in an artist's journey
- The framework for successful music releases: story, momentum, and outreach

In this video, Robert discusses how relying on Top 10 and Top 100 algorithmic lists from digital sales platforms like Beatport & Traxsource might be holding you back from developing authentic tastes and concrete skills as a selector. While proven and popular, using these easy to find tracks won't set you apart as a tastemaker and DJ. Robert shares a great resource for finding hidden gems in the...

In this video, I break down the critical DRY/WET parameter found on DJ effects units like the Pioneer RMX-1000 and DDJ-400 controllers. Many DJs randomly twist knobs without understanding the core principles behind effect processing. Unfortunately, this can lead to over use of effects which amplify harsh frequencies and will have crowds covering their ears rather than raising their hands. This ...

A Hit Record Could Put Your Label Out of Business
Переглядів 4Місяць тому
Everyone in the music biz wants hits, but a hit record could put a record label out of business in the ’90s. Here’s how Johnny D, record exec at Henry Street Music & frmrly. Atlantic Records, described the brutal cycle: 1. Press 1,000 records → They sell out. 2. Front the money for another 1,000 → The distributors promise payment in 30 days. 3. While waiting, release two more records → They flo...

i am sorry but that transition was very anticlimactic oof
Are you referring to 6:50 or the transition to the SLS track? If so fair enough - always room for improvement!
@@learningtodj sorry i meant 4:40, you lost all the energy here
@@Zoulist1-x4w I agree. The highs and mids of the Ben Sims track should've been faded much more gradually and using the EQ knobs rather than the volume. Taking more time over the mix would've let the incoming track get to the section at about 5:30 where it's not all bass with very little mid. My rule of thumb is not to kill a track with interesting mids until there is something in the incoming track in that frequency range to replace it with
@@Zoulist1-x4w Great point, that transition was a little abrupt out, maybe a smoother fade - thanks for the call out!
@@neilarmour4497 Great heuristic - thanks for calling that out!
good video mate, but stop cutting too frequently and heavily the bits where you're explaining stuff, cheers.
The realist shit 💯
Thanks for the feedback, I'll tweak the edits a bit in coming videos - cheers :)
Hey, very interesting! Only the microphone has some flaws, and make it difficult to listen to because the sound is very unequal. Hope you can fix it for the next ones! ✌️
Thanks for the feedback, this was the first time I recorded live over the louder playback so I figured there might be some issues, I'll see if I can tweak!
Please Help me Sir I Have XDJ - 1000Mk2 after formatting in Fat32 in my windows Lapetop . But when i put that new usb 128 gb drive it always showing "format the device".. This Usb Drive properly Showing in Rekordbox but not in my Player .. Please Help me Sir .. Love from india
Hey there! Did you format with FAT32 *and* Master Boot Record (MBR)? Also, be sure to double check that your XDJ firmware is up to date by visiting pioneer's website. The drive will always show up in rekordbox since your computer will just read it as a USB hub
I’ve been using djuiced 😅
watt a cool dude
Biggest respect to Johnny D 🙏
Pretty sure you can format in HFS+ or Mac OS Journaled - that format works with all standalone CDJs and standalone Pioneer units it also allows for massively faster syncing of music form Rekordbox - have a look at Mojave latest post on this
Great point! For safety, I stick with FAT32 + MBR as older CDJs I have had issues with :)

The best way to master beat matching is with records, you have to rely on your ears only. What happens if you try to beat match two tracks with beat grids that are off, disaster.
That makes sense Andy. Training your ears is definitely the aim. I will point out that dude to cost and accessibility, many DJs do start as digital DJs today. That being said, I definitely encourage students to learn habits and tools from vinyl DJing, I myself have learned a lot. I talk about this a bit in my Versatility tutorial as well, where we incrementally remove the technological assistance to gain a better intuition for how vinyl DJs use their equipment.
In your car example, if the cars are next to each other at the same speed but the tires 🛞 of the cars are not moving in synchronized motion.
Hi Mac, can you clarify what you mean - I'm not sure I understand.
@ you can be going at the same speed as another car but the wheel rotation 🛞 of the car aren’t moving at the same time. Hope that makes sense
very nice like the setup to! wonder if they will ever releace mk3's
I hope so ! But I decided not to wait until they do as the MK2's are quality and capable units - plus they are manufactured with Pioneer's new chips I believe.
