This video is Part II of the video called Finishing Seams with the Zig-Zag Stitch. Some viewers had questions about how to use the Zig-Zag stitch with materials that are thin or delicate. These fabrics are hard to Zig-Zag because the sewing machine can "eat" the fabric. This video shows a trick you may use to Zig-Zag the edge of thin or delicate material.

Our German Shepherd, Jenny, and her "brother", Gomer, regularly fight like this. Note that Jenny, while rough, is careful not to harm him.

      It is an old Pfaff and so they probably don't make it anymore :) For thread, I like to use Guttermann thread, especially for outdoor gear.

    I have a 385.15516000 I am trying to get the foot to fit, is there away I can adjust the needle setting so it will work. I use to sew a long long time ago. My daughter law used it some time ago I don’t know if she lost the foot to the sewing machine but they do not fit. It snap in place just find put the needle is biting the metal. Thank you

      Hi Carol....sorry for the late reply - I don't monitor this enough :) It's hard to answer without seeing your machine. Most do have a needle placement adjustment. Otherwise, you could google the model to find a foot that fits, or also put a file to the one you have that does at least snap on.

    I have a drop-in bobbin and sometimes nothing works unless I pull out the bobbin holder and mess with it. But I don't know how to adjust the bottom tension, I just try different things until it looks OK. On my Brother I have continual problems with my tension messing up very often and adjusting the top tension doesn't fix it. I really don't know what to do about it.

    Definitely a cheaper alternative than buying $30 pinking shears! Now I don't have to shell out extra cash for those shears. I can just use the zig zag stitch on my machine for free. Thank you for letting us newbies in on this invaluable sewing tip:)!

    Its easier to use the overcast presser foot to prevent rolling. The bar on the foot works similar to the serger overlock stitch finger by looping the thread on it to make a flat clean edge when using any overcast stitch setting(s). The overcast foot extends longer on the right side to keep the edge lined up - its perfect for sewing lightweight fabric w/out rolling ... I have a Brother cs6000i, the overcast foot is a standard part that came w/this sewing machine. It also works well for sewing narrow straight seams ...

    Thanks for the informative video. I wanted to ask that there are 2 tensions here; the needle thread tension and the bobbin thread tension. So in your examples which thread tension is loose or tight? I am just a confused beginner using a Consew 230.

    • @kimberleygamble8630
      @kimberleygamble8630 4 роки тому

      Hi Simon; I'm probably not the person whom you expect to reply to your question; but I thought I can share abit my knowledge with you. In the example she gives the stitch in the middle is when the tension is too loose (meaning it will look broken on the right side & non broken on the other side (ws); whereas the final stitch she did the tension was too tight(meaning you would see a non broken line on the rs/top of the fabric. Hope I've helped here somewhat. One tip or advice: A correct stitch is when they's a broken line on the top & bottom of the fabric. Tfs

    Does the fabric used play a role in the stitch being too loose or too tight? Because my issue is that when i try to sew, it looks okay with my test fabric but went totally wrong with my actual project fabric..

    • @TheHikingFool
      @TheHikingFool 8 років тому

      Yes, the fabric does effect the tension set. It's best if you can set the tension on a scrap piece of the fabric you plan to use

  • @THEREDRAJ
    @THEREDRAJ 8 років тому

    I agree. Take your machine to a professional to have the tension adjusted properly. UNLESS you know what you are doing, you will waste your time and cause more problems. AND it may not be the tension after all, it could be a worn out belt. Let the professional do his job, and enjoy sewing your projects.

    What did you use to thread your needle. Very nice.

    • @TheHikingFool
      @TheHikingFool 9 років тому

      It's just a little wire needle-threader which attaches to the machine. Many machines come with these now, but older machines not so much. You can get a hand needle-threader at any sewing store, and you'd have to just pick it up instead of having it attached to the machine. They are all just a little wire in the shape of a hook or a loop. You push the wire through the eye of the needle, and then put your thread on the hook or through the loop, depending on what type you have.

    Hi folks from TheHikingFool thank you too for sharing this video tutorial with online viewers like me; thread tension problem ting is alot clearer to me now; I say this becuz I was taught thread tension problems when I had done sewing classess but I did never fully understand it until now; so thanks again for sharing this.; becuz I had those same exact problems when I was working on a project which I had to stop becuz of the thread tension to loose/ to tight. My sewing machine thread tension dial usually works within 5-6 but in doing a project today I had to set it at 9 for a gud balance out stitch. One query should I leave it on that setting or should I try different thread tension settings on projects I do with the different materials. Look forward to your response soon.

    • @TheHikingFool
      @TheHikingFool 9 років тому

      Hi Kimberley, Thanks for your kind words. To answer your question, I would recommend to put the tension back where it was, near the middle, once that project is complete. Unless you are dealing with very thick or unusual material, a middle setting suffices. You can start in the middle, and check the stitches on a new fabric, and then adjust if needed. If you find that a setting near the middle does not usually work for most fabrics, and you're always working at "9" even for normal fabrics, you may want to have your machine tuned-up!
