Why is Ella so popular?
Ella is a small town tucked away in the hill country of central Sri Lanka. It's known for having lush landscapes and great hiking trails, attracting trekkers and outdoorsy types. The chilled out vibe and relaxed nightlife has a similar feel to Pai in Thailand and is a really popular place for backpackers too.
Ella is surrounded by hills covered with cloud forests and tea plantations. The town has a cooler climate than surrounding lowlands, due to its elevation. The Ella Gap allows views across the southern plains of Sri Lanka. On a sunny morning, you can even see the glow from the lighthouses along the southern coast.
One of the best ways to reach Ella is by train and the ride from Kandy to Ella is known to be one of the most beautiful in the world! While you can travel from Colombo to Ella by train, most train services don't follow the Kandy-Ella route, hence the best route would be Colombo-Badulla.
