BBC Newsnight: Labour's relationship with business was the real clincher
After announcing his unexpected endorsement for the Labour Party, business leader, philanthropist, Phones 4U founder and previous Conservative Party donor John Caudwell joined Victoria Derbyshire on BBC Newsnight to explain his "helluva U-turn".
Caudwell said: "Over the last two or three months, I've looked at the Labour manifesto, looked at what they stand for, and gradually, slowly, and grudgingly, after 50 years of Conservative support, moved [Labour's] way.
"The real clincher was on Friday when I was at a business conference that they were holding. There were 50 chief executives of some of the biggest companies in the UK, representing £4 trillion of market cap. And the, not camaraderie, but the empathy from [Shadow Chancellor] Rachel Reeves and the others in the Labour Party and these senior business people was clear.
"It was about the questions that were asked, [which] received really excellent answers about what Labour were going to do with the economy."
The discussion continued with analysis from Newsnight political editor Nicholas Watt, and commentary from fellow guests Isabel Oakeshott from Talk TV and former Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson.
The full episode of Newsnight is available on BBC iPlayer.

It is preposterous that employers ever started the outrageous practice of contacting workers outside of working hours.
Not often you see a Buccaneer flown this close to its service ceiling.
Bloody expensive leaf blower 😉
How do you need motivation beyond £10m or anyone for that matter ? Fool
I'm wondering if the UK put enough effort into upgrading the Bucc's nav/attack system. Any thoughts?

Another billionaire who thinks he knows best for the ordinary people
Just because you are, John, I shall vote against them I had decided to abstain, but you have swayed me Nice to know your vote doesn't count, isn't it?
Would I buy a used car from this chap. If I'm being hones, I'd say no.
so correct about inflation, and we are still being ripped off even today.
I bet he took all the covid grants he could get his hands on. He would against any sort of wealth tax even if it saved babies from dying and did make Britain work. Corbyn only suggested in his costed manifesto that all earning over £80000 pay £20 a month more. As if he would notice that!
I don’t really care what he thinks. His life is nothing like mine.
Another member of the WEF. Just FO
If you think he's going to win, he will but the country will be well and truly screwed.
To be fair the last Labour government was good for business as well.
Isn't it nice to have the ear of the political leadership...? Most of us only have a vote.
Growth through migration, lots of cheap labour, a bit like those who built your business empire for you in the 1990s
I wonder what it was that attracted his current partner to this rather charmless and very much older billionaire.
Dear oh dear, one of those shallow individuals who thinks a persons worth on this planet is determined by the number written on their bank statement, well it isn't, that number on his bank statement simply reveals what an extremely greedy little man he is. He disingenuously pretends to care about climate change and net zero while living a self indulgent and excessive 'life style', totally out of touch with the majority of people in this country. He's an all out Tory and Labour should tell him to sling his hook.
Dont Vote Labour or Tory they are both the same ,warmongers
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
"They had some challenges with Brexit". Are you taking the piss? Please feel sorry for me. I have mobility problems since I deliberately encased my feet in concrete.
Labour views business as the golden egg. It likes the money but doesn't have the first clue as to how it is created. To be fair, the tories are equally clueless. What we want is a political class who limit their involvement to ensuring monopolies are as much as possible broken up, but otherwise regulated to the benefit of consumers. As Adam Smith observed 'It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages. '
How much cheap labour do you want? How can you grow gdp when you take more and more money out of the economy in taxes? What a useful idiot

Yeah, Tories LOVE Starmer.
All the more reason to vote for literally anybody else.
No body should be a billionaire. I have no problem with rich people but that is a ridiculous amount of money. Pay your goddam taxes!
How can the BBC imagine they have a shred of credibility left after including this puff piece for Labour in their flagship News at Ten bulletin?
VOTE REFORM
NO!
This man will be investing in Labour's scam Green Policy and make a few more billion in return. Also, he'll become Lord Caudwell of Stoke on Trent.
Quran 9:29 states wanting disbelievers to pay Jizyah. Labour has many quran believers. Vote reform to prevent sharia law. Vote reform to stop uncontrolled mass migration. They will cost a lot because they will be on benefits.
Why don’t you do more to help lyme victims afford treatment?
He has lost his mind. Growth of GDP is miles behind growth of population but that’s not important to billionaires who thrive on cheap labour!
😂😂😂😂
The rich don't care who is in power, so long as they get the opportunity to influence said power
A vote down the toilet and a missed opportunity to finance (in the future, of course) the only party that actually gives a damn what happens to the people of this country. Spoiler alert, it isn't the tories, lib-dems, or green party.
Jumping ship with money. What a change! 😂🤮
I think Kier Starmer will be the inspirational leader that Rishi Sunak couldn't be. I look forward to his debut on the world stage. With Foreign Secretary Lammy by his side, Britain will truly be putting it's best foot forward.
The guy lies. He'll be out once people realise they voted for Tory lite.
He's inspired me to vote Green anyway.
Tell me you want a peerage before you die without telling me that you want a peerage before you die.
Absolute tool, you will regret it.
