Mirrors Are Water focuses on the ideas in John Frusciante’s lyrics.
Frusciante Talks Songwriting - From 2004 Q&A
This video features John from his 2004 Q&A, where he discussed his songwriting process. I paired the clip with the improvised portion of his 2001 live set in Amsterdam. The way he describes his songwriting process is similar to his improvised playing. This is directly related to the point I made in Ep.1 (ua-cam.com/video/tcnmxNZ3n4o/v-deo.html) where I made the case that John's solo work is similar to Jung's active imagination. John is using his feelings to enter an imaginal space. By refining his work, he gets a representation of his feelings in musical form.

The Story Inside The Will to Death (Ep.2 - The Inner World of John Frusciante)
Переглядів 3,4 тис.Місяць тому
There is a hidden story within the lyrics of John Frusciante’s 2004 album, The Will to Death. Its central narrative tells the story of John, and his relationship with the Creative Force during his first stint with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, leading up to his departure in 1992. In this video, I walk through the album track by track and discuss how each song fits into a larger story. 0:00 Intro 3...
John Frusciante - Blinded by the 4th Dimension ft. Interview from Robert A. Johnson
Переглядів 1,3 тис.5 місяців тому
In this video, Jungian Analyst Robert A. Johnson discusses how someone overwhelmed by the negative aspects of the outer world can retreat further into their inner world. Frusciante was lost in the “4th dimension”, or the inner world, during the recording of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. When the album was released, it launched the band into superstardom, bombarding Frusciante’s with externalities that...
John Frusciante, Carl Jung, & The Self (Ep.1 - The Inner World of John Frusciante)
Переглядів 5 тис.8 місяців тому
This video is about John Frusciante and the symbolic self found in his lyrics. I’m trying to suggest that his belief in spirits and a higher power should not be dismissed. Although he has had issues with drug addiction, I believe this is a result, not a cause, of his ability to perceive these patterns of being. Carl Jung was also capable of this perception. By applying the language from the wor...
I’ve always heard those same lyrics u mentioned at first the brothers who drove arrows is immediately recognized as a real situation with real people not esoteric like his other lyrics
They kind of stand out from the rest.
Very nice video! I have note about the dead of John, if this sleeping/dead is simbolic. Because I read few years ago that at the end of his drug use when he was brought to the hospital, he was for short period of time clinicaly dead. If its something on it, it will also explain transcendent experience for him and all these things which he captures in his lyrics. What do you think about it? Thanks for the video, I will be waiting for next ones:)
Thanks for the comment! I appreciate the question. I think you're right that the near death experience you mentioned plays a part in his lyrics. And there is a good chance that some of the lyrics do reference that event in his life. However, the hospital visit doesn't match the timeline described in the video. There was a distinct moment early on that changed who he was, and I equated that moment with a symbolic death. I think that it would be interesting if a link between the hospital death and spicific lyrics could be found.
@@mirrorsarewatertahnks for answer. What you did with this album I did few years ago with Empyrean as in that album is lots to cover as you mentioned. I was specialy intersted in music and lyrics in song One more of me. In combination with Enought of me, it create whole new song from point of music and also lyrics. I would love to hear your thoughts on this album and combination of these two songs 😁 when I heard them for the first time together, it was wow moment for me.
Yeah I enjoyed that video! I thought that was a nice addition, mentioning One More / Enough of Me. The Empyrean is a difficult album for me. On the one hand, John did more work explaining the background of the album than any other. But it also is so symbolically dense that every lyric and musical shift is telling us something. I hope to get there one day, but I feel like I'm not ready to take it on just yet.
If so, do you have please some links where I can find some more information about this album from John himself, explainging it? I listen to this album and play it on guitar many times since 2009 but never saw from John talking or writing about these songs and concept of albume as hole. I always just use my own interpretations of the songs 😁
Sure! John wrote a series of blog posts on his website during the release of the album. Unfortunately, they have since been deleted, but you can use the web.archive.org/ to explore his old posts. Someone grabbed the Empyrean posts and organized it in this google doc: docs.google.com/document/d/1fb3Ifadmm7ayPkvGjw6WtLHcp9E2rk-awF3ZOeIJF-8/edit?tab=t.0 Have fun reading them!
Im glad i found your channel! Its always good to listen to john's take on music and hear other people's analysis on it so to have a dedicated channel for it is so cool to see.
I'm happy you found the channel!
Can you please make a video on 'Shadow collide with people'.
Someday I will. I have some cool ideas for that album, but there are things that I want to cover first. In the meantime, if you take the philosophy of Ep.1 & 2, you will be able to uncover some pretty cool meanings from SCWP.
Best channel ever! Can I share this on Fbook?
Of course! Any time. Some of my videos have been posted on the FruscianteWorld FB page before. It really helps my channel, thanks!
So cool understanding what is art from my favorite artist
Let’s goo I have been anticipating a vid!
yo may I ask what your process for making these videos is? I'm trying to make lyric videos and really like the style of your videos. like, how do you decide what images to use, which font for the subtitles and type of transitions?
Thanks! My process is very similar to John's description in the video. I listen to his music/interviews until an idea pops up. I use Power Director for the video editing and use their catalogue of stock images/transitions/fonts. I go through them until I see something that "feels" right. I try to find an image that has a vague connection to the message of scene. I try not to second guess myself too much and treat this as a learning exercise rather than my next masterpiece.
@@mirrorsarewater well it's good stuff :D
You're ma man. Glad to see a new video here :D
Thanks, Glad to see you in the comments!
@@mirrorsarewater For each new Video, I'll be here :D
Thank you for making this channel.
Thank you for watching this channel 😀
After decades of being a fan it still often amazes me how intelligent he is.
It's unreal how much explanation is required to demonstrate the genius of his works.
"The will to death" and "Inside of Emptiness" are two of my favorite albums of all time.
I never connected those lyrics so directly to era's of his life. I knew it was about some enlightenment experience(s). But I guess it makes sense this way.
The research is top tier! What if this channel was like trickfinger, where it’s actually just John explaining himself under a guise lol
Haha, thanks for the complement. I wish I had a direct line to JF, It would make this project a lot easier :)
Great content, thanks for sharing
Thanks for the comment!
great video looking foward to seeing more of it:)
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Nice vid
love your content and want you to make more
Thanks! I have more coming!
Im so grateful to have found your channel and your videos. When i found johns music+philosopies i was very very isolated. I didnt think there were many others out there who lit up like i did when listening to this stuff. A lot of people are fans of his music or rhcp but they write off his writing and his philosophies. Not many people can open up to understanding (or trying to understand) these notions. Its beautiful to see and hear of everyone in the comments and you with this video, truly analysing and leaning into what he's been saying. He's my biggest inspiration. Listening to him and his music, hearing his life story and his thoughts, on many levels, saved me. So much love and appreciation to you and everyone in the comments. ❤
Thanks for this comment, I feel the same isolation sometimes. I think there is so much to discover about John's work. It's a shame that he still mostly thought of as a "top 10 guitarist" or what gear he uses. Its nice to know there are others who appreciate the deeper aspects of his work. Thanks!
Really cool, these kind of videos really fit with John's music
Great. really Good
Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you liked it.
WWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO new video and on friday :O F Yeah :D Funnywise The Will to Death has been in my Top 3 of John Albums. When Iwas listening for the 1st times it was a good album of course, but I didn't saw the deep meaning or concept of the record. Today this is a more happier record in many cases which is a completly different tone in comparison to the empyrean or shadows coolide or to record :) Luv the Video :D
Awesome! Love the excitement!
Remember exactly where I was first time I heard this album. AMAZING album. The whole 6 albums in 6 months was incredible.
this video is beautiful I never wondered how deep JF words would mean so much in my life today and you portrayed it nicely
Excellent video. Where did you find the interview footage around the 11:50 mark? I've never seen that interview clip before.
Thanks! The clip was taken from this video, round 6min mark: ua-cam.com/video/bwurMkraHZk/v-deo.htmlsi=V6Kg8IzsvdTreZNs
There's so much to unpack, loved watching this.
Great to hear you enjoyed it!
3:53 where's that background from?
Are you asking about the background photo I used? Or the background to my premise? The photo is from Passo Giau. Stock photo.
great research. Much like a lot of us, John has been my favorite musician since circa 1993 but especially since 2002.
Thanks! I started listening to the Chili's in 99. DC EP was my first time hearing a solo album. Good times.
If not a concept album, I believe "Far Away" refers to his girlfriend at the time Mila, who treated him poorly towards the back end of their relationship as she saw him first as someone who she wanted to see, and over time only wanted him to be that person she saw at the start. Hence, "I cant pretend to be who im not/There are things you need from me I havent got". Ending it with "only one way for things to be between you and me" signifying the hurtful end of the relationship.
Great, this is a perfect critical comment. But, I did mention the dual interpretation of this song in the video. If you have anymore thoughts, leave a comment. I'd like to do a second video that better explains my position. I feel like this video didn't land the way I expected and I'd like to know specific things to address.
@@mirrorsarewater I know, thats why i said if its not a concept album, because if it is, your theory adds up
Haha, sorry. I thought that was a typo and you were saying "Its not" a concept album. (I've been getting that a lot lately.)
This is insanely good. You've researched your entire ass off. 😊
If there is any part of this video that you would like extra explanation, please comment below and I will try to clarify or give extra context. Thanks for watching!
I damn love these Videos. Also their philisophical, psychological explaination here. Well done Mister :D
Thanks for the support!
"It's against my religion to talk about my religion." - John Frusciante (my favorite quote of his)
Great quote. It's a shame that once he released his most explicitly religious album, he quit talking about anything publicly, let alone his religious views.
@@mirrorsarewater I assume he was likely initiated into a school by that time, so it makes sense
I think he used the words"belief system" instead of "religion".
@@linguafranca86 yeah my bad we both misquoted. "My religious point of view is something I can't really talk about. It goes against my belief system, to talk about my spiritual beliefs." But i mean the implications are dead obvious

Cool videos bro I love learning more about John! Thanks
Thanks! I'm glad you like them.
everyone will have there own theories on little things, stick with the bigger sections of the whole.
you are really working things out. its great
So true. It was so hard to know what was important to the whole and what weighed it down. I'm definitely not done. There are things I'd like to return to with different context. Thanks for the comments!
Very well done!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the comment!
"My shadow side so amplified keeps comin' back dissatisfied...." That's enough for the Jung connection on its own ! Great video
This is the coolest channel on UA-cam. John’s lyrics are so deep it takes years for them to fully integrate in your psyche. I’ve been listening to his solo stuff for 15+years and I’m still learning new things from his lyrics
Thanks! That's a great point. I've been listening since DC EP but didn't really think the lyrics were anything more than art for arts sake. But that gradually changed. For the past 5 years I've been listening to nothing but John while trying to absorb as much as I could. There are still many lyrics that I haven't completely wrapped my brain around. Glad you enjoyed! P.S. I checked out some of your Frusciante covers, nice work!
i really like your videos, it changed my perspective on John’s lyrics, which is something I did not pay much attention for some reason
Before I started this channel I also didn't pay much attention to his lyrics. His music means so much more to me now. Hopefully your appreciation is growing as well. Thanks for the comment!
I love John but he's contradicted himself on MANY occasions
Who hasn't? John used to be very open and would share unrefined thoughts, things he was working through. I'm sure he disagrees with a lot of what he's said over the years. But there is an underlying thread to his lyrics that is remarkably consistent.
@@mirrorsarewater I've noticed the thread that goes through his solo art: I'm talking more about his takes on the his work with the Chili's. He'll bash his work on an album, then praise it. I'm not saying that having those feeling aren't normal. More that his opinions change more frequently than most.
@@bakihanma644 They definitely do. I wish we could hear some more of his opinions. Aside from the Ruben podcast we don't get much from him these days.
@@mirrorsarewater l loved how he gave the energy of Mother's Milk some love. He also said "Can't get that back". That made me upset.
You mean to say unconsciousness who is still unconscious?
I'm not quite sure what you are asking. I use the Jungian term unconscious to describe parts of our psyche that we don't have direct knowledge of. It may be causing confusion because the term unconscious can imply a lacking of consciousness, like a table or a rock. However, animals are considered conscious beings, but, they're not meta-conscious like us. In this video, when I use the term unconscious, I'm pointing to the consciousness that is not able to reflect on experience but is subjugated to experience in itself. I'm not sure if this helps. Bernardo Kastrup is a great resource if you want to get more info on Jung.
did a great job of romanticizing doing crack and heroin for 5 years and basically killing river phoenix. Real artistic of you bro
You seem to be confusing my attempt at seeing the beauty in his life with naivety. I feel like your cynical take is blinding you. From the song "One More of Me" "All of the fucked things you do, Are the product of what's happened to you Whatever you create from love Is a gift from the place which some call up above There's only the forces of hate and love One breaks things down and one builds them up"
I get why he quit the 1st time. Its the 2nd time I'm wondering about.
I heard it's because he wanted to get focused on his own music. He created 2 albums during that time if I remember well
Really odd how he describes those years after he quit as "fun". He was a skeleton who was shooting up heroin constantly and was living in squalor. The planes of dimensions he's talking about was him being high as a kite. He used to hallucinate full-on conversations with people who weren't there. People from the outside who saw him during this period of time were extremely concerned about him. He was spiraling down a very dark path. By some miracle, he survived this period and was able to recover from a severe heroin addiction. Maybe it was "fun" for him because he enjoyed doing the drugs and had not reached a "rock bottom" point in his life. He was just having fun being a drug addict. But from the outside, people knew it was only a matter of time before he was dead. Interesting perspective that he still thinks of this time as "fun", because when fans see videos of him during that point in his life, it's horrifying to watch.
Sometimes you have to destroy in order to create..........and he certainly knows who he is more than anyone else
He's not necessarily talking about those years, iirc after 94 he went to rehab and only rejoined in 98 so might be these times and he's not even mentioning those hardcore years. Or maybe that's included in the sadness he mentioned
@@Wick3DSteely I've heard him talk before specifically about those years he was on drugs and how enlightening it was and how he was never afraid of dying and that he felt he could stop any time he wanted. But he kept going because he liked it. So this isn't the first time he's talked about really enjoying that time in his life. Which to an outsider sounds crazy.
I was in a state quite similar a few years ago. I'm sober now, don't even smoke weed, no alcohol, nothing. I look back on those times as some of the best. I know from the outside it looks horrific, but when you're inside it, it's really introspective. I learned a lot, I experienced a lot, I felt a lot, I created a lot. I was probably close to death too but it didn't *feel* bad. It felt great. All I did was paint, write, play guitar+piano. I was a recluse, my house was falling apart, I didn't have anything but Dr*gs and art. In that rock bottom I gained everything. In giving up I actually found the will to live (ironically given the track that's playing in this video). Sometimes you have to give up to go somewhere. As above so below. As I said, I'm sober now and I look back thankfully and gratefully on that time period. It led me to where I am now, i was able to express myself and learn in ways that I didn't think were humanely possible. There's as big a universe inside us as there is outside. Experiencing that from my fucked up perspective isn't something id ever change.
do the one with terrence howard
Haha, nice one, you genuinely got a laugh out of me. But there is definitely overlap with these two artists. For one, they are both visionaries and are extremely intelligent. However, I think that Terrence has the added ability to influence others with his charisma and ability to speak, and with that, there is an added temptation to use his gifts to manipulate others. It doesn't seem, at least from listening to the Rogan interview, that Terrance has fully dealt with that aspect of himself. There is an air of honesty and introspection from Frusciante that I don't see from Terrance. Thanks for the comment :)
man. the work you are doing here is incredible. please dont stop.
Love it, thanks for the encouragement!
Amazing!! 👏
A religious experience yes. All prophets, like John, and shamans, and those like them go through their own "psychosis" and if matured and guided properly, they come out an altered and profound image.
Love this comment. Thanks.
Pretty well🎉🎉🎉
I went to the university listening to this masterpiece as a podcast. This is amazing and I hope there's more episodes so I can repeat it!
