Good calls. Tom is the GOAT. Personally, I'd start with Pertwee in glorious colour and work through from there. Once you've done the 80s, go back to the black and white and go from there. I also like the suggestion of randomly selecting a story from any Doctor and just leaping in and seeing how you fare. Just pick one with a title, cover or thumbnail that looks interesting. Be patient and delve in.

There is a 4th option. Watch the episodes and read its TV tie in book. This is how I did it. For instance I watched The Green Death [3rd Doctor] and read the book. The books are well written and often go a bit beyond the episodes; for instance in one of the books it even considers if The Third Doctor and Jo could marry and have kids.

Personally if your new I suggest just picking a choosing what is seen as the best stories of each era and just finding what you like.

I had to watch all of classic Who according to the vhs releases of the 90s and early 00s, so I didn’t get to choose. Now you’re free to start anywhere now that the classic series is completely available on dvd and vhs (tho the vhs range will be out of print now). My first thee vhs stories were: Death To The Daleks, Pyramids Of Mars and Day Of The Daleks, all in their original edited movie-style formats on vhs. Death To The Daleks I received as a birthday present just days after the final episode of Survival was shown in December 1989.

Aside from my earlier reply, I think the best approach to classic Who is to watch stretches. That is, an absolute minimum of three consecutive stories. Kind of the opposite of watching one story from each Doctor (which I think is the worst approach, but ETHO). This way you get a sense of the developing relationships, how the regulars react to a variety of situations and so on. Not only does this work brilliantly for a lot of surviving stories (which have more continuity than you might think) but you can also enjoy an epic of audio-only episodes. Before there were animated reconstructions, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the (admittedly rather weak) Galaxy 4, followed by the intriguing Mission to the Unknown, followed by three hilarious episodes of The Myth Makers, along with its surprisingly downbeat final episode, followed by the high adventure of The Dalek Master Plan, and finishing with the serious drama of The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve. You can listen to these while driving, mowing the lawn, washing the dishes or whatever and find yourself thoroughly in the zone.

Jon Pertwee was not as Earth-bound as people think. Even in his first season (his most Earth-bound) he travelled into space and visited an eerie parallel world in one of the best adventures of all time. After that he went into space with Axos, had a lengthy adventure on the planet Uxarieus, had TWO lengthy adventures on Peladon (one of the few occasions when a single incarnation of the Doctor visited a planet more than once), had two relatively brief adventures on Metebelis Three, had an admittedly dull adventure on the planet Solos, travelled to Omega's realm, had an adventure on the planet Inter Minor (and also had a Groundhog Day adventure while exploring and escaping an alien TV set), visited the Moon, Draconia, and the Ogron planet, had an adventure on Spiridon, briefly glimpsed Skaro, and had an adventure on Exxilon. Even on Earth we got an adventure in history, and visits to two futures. So start with Spearhead From Space if you can't cope with the (excellent) black and white stuff!

I don’t see any reason why you have to start at the beginning of a Doctors run so The Time Warrior Pertwee’s last season would be a good choice in my opinion. You’d get a feel for Pertwee an introduction for Sarah and several returning monsters in the first season.

I started from the very beginning after watching all of modern who and never having watched classic who and definitely don't regret my decision.
