The Last of Us 2 | A Complete Story Critique
Quick little update to this video since it’s been exactly 4 years today that it was uploaded: Much like my Prototype video, I think a lot of the “jokes” regarding women are in extremely poor taste and are even outright sexist. This is (unfortunately) just where my sense of humor was at the time. There’s been a lot of maturing in the years since I made this, and it’s only right for me to publicly denounce it for being derogatory and wrong. Learning to properly respect people is something that took me longer than it should, and this is video is evidence of that. Much like the Prototype video, I have still decided not to delete the video outright. I did delist it for several months and had a few people tell me how upset they were that it was gone, and I don’t want to prevent anybody from enjoying the actual analysis, despite the misogyny mixed in with it. In the wise words of my HR harassment training, “we all make mistakes. So when you do, take responsibility, and apologize.” This is an acknowledgement that I’ve grown as a person and matured out of this kind of “humor,” and I’ve distanced myself from the people who still haven’t.
"Modern Betheda games like Skyrim" 8:00 - a 13 year old game lol
I think that Skyrim’s design philosophy still seeps through their other titles (also it’s the last Bethesda-developed Elder Scrolls game since ESO is made by Zenimax Online)
After playing both games and completing both stories with almost everything unlocked, i can confidently tell that i prefer 2 over 1. I feel like prototype 2 is such a slept on game it ain't even funny. The story is meh, but missions are fun and more bearable to play, gameplay is more fleshed out despite the lack of abilities when compared to the first game, and i really liked James's character over Alex. I feel a very slept on aspect of 2 is the ost because that shit is so underrated. I will say, though, that prototype 1 has more devastators and general abilities going for it, but i really dont mind the cut powers since i never found much use for them. I found Hellers character to be more enjoyable over the edgy character Mercer had going on. Keep in mind this is all my opinion, so dont take it to heart.
All those games were EASY compared to what had come before! They are hard for a generation NOT weaned on games where you could sell a mundane, totally unmarked, absolutely unassuming item (such as an apple) to a merchant at the very beginning of the game only to find out that you needed that specific object in the very last encounter! . . . start over, peasant! 🤣
lol so many ads, you greedy bastard
There is only two things that I agree with you in this video. That the banter during combat gets on my nerves and your choice of eyebrows with the bushy ends.
That actually made me laugh lmfao
You should just give up gaming as you are a overly critical
To be fair, you did click on a "critique and analysis" of the game. I'm not quite sure what you expected....but I'm glad that you like the game. There are some things about it that have stuck with me since making the video and I use as examples for "things done right" in other games, but overall I really didn't enjoy it.
I loved the game.
Funny how everyone prefers alex coz hes "edgier" its like people didn't play 2 heller is way edgier hes extremely aggressive tells everyone to go fk themselves, says dark jokes constantly hes awesome, underrated protag.
throwing that guy was the perfect intro lol
Everyone remember the myth surrounding the leg on the rooftop? That drove me to 100% this banger. Huh. Red Light, Black Light. All we need is Gold and White and the alchemic process would be there!
It may or may not be a DFU function, but you can erase quests from your quest log by right clicking on them
Boring ass gameplay in both 2018 god of war and this one. The story is 10/10 tho.
The tie in comics the anchor shows mercers dive into who he is now
Update as of 9/30/24: I will be deleting this video as soon as my next one is published. We’re no longer living in a crisis and it feels a little too trauma-dumpy in retrospect.
I am happy to hear you are doing better. I am a new sub. But thought I'd wish you the best of luck with everything. Looking forward to your next vid.❤
Final thoughts! Amazing video. You gave a valueable critique. I played alot of prototype 1 & 2 and I prefer Prototype 1's gritty realism but I also love Prototype 2. You sound like you've already become a fan and I'm so stoked about that! Welcome to the wait for Prototype 3 😅. Also the fanfictions are really good 😶
I wish I could like twice.
I know its a meme, but musclemass throw is FUCKING GOLD when it comes to eliminating hunters. Just pancakes 'em. Fuck hunters. Also, in Prototype 2, this is pretty meta but I had a lot of fun not upgrading running speed and restricting myself to using disguises only. Since fists are now viable, and you can rip heavy weapons off vehicles, it's actually quite fun to run around as Leonard the jacked electrician and just annihilate people.
For greene, ive found that the arial sword chop is the best for her tentacles, supplementing it with wipfist, and devastaters for big damage when she goes down. Its not actually that tedious.
We need another Sekiro game, because the combat is great, I just like that StarWars isn't trying to be difficult with every incounter. It is nice to enjoy the Sekiro combat as a power fantasy, without having punishment all the time.
I agree. It close to being the ultimate StarWars, but it's not. But now you MUST talk about Jedi Survivor - I'm ready for6 hours of that :D What I hate about the combat is the lack of responsiveness with blocking and the unlockables. Unlockables are unlockable for no sensible reason. An large ogre can be blocked, though the impact of it's swings would send Kestis flying no matter what. A stormtrooper's swing can be blocked, except when it's an unlockable - an it just is unlockable. But there is no difference between them. I'm not so bothered by off-screen attacks, because it's part of the fight to keep track of enemies. But any and all enemies can attack at the same time. And a spider and an ogre would not be cooperating.
Another banger. I’m almost out of videos, you have approximately 2 weeks to drop before I take matters into my own hands 😡 (JK 😘)
LOL man if I could have the next one out that fast that that would be amazing. I’m really glad that you’re enjoying them!
@@saltyshrimppasta enjoy is an understatement. For literally a decade I have put on long form analysis of games I’ve played in the background of me working, cleaning, having a bath (yes I take baths 😡) and it is very abnormal for me to consume ~90% of a channels content consecutively 😫 you’ve led the horse to water, now LET ME DRINK 😂
“She tells him to rise, and he does, but he also gets up in the process” is the one joke so far a that’s made me actually laugh out loud 😂
"De Sardet can't understand the legal terminology" Truly the most relatable protagonist.
The HUD for weapons is like the worst i came across in arena shooters, you got no overview what kind of weps you currently posses except when you hold down a button that you use frequently for switching weapons. Insane how this went through testing if you ask me.. forcing this shitty weapon whell actually hurt the hud so much... coming from UT where you see your weapons at all times in order at the bottom, doom feels hud wise like it backpeddled back 15 years. Absolut horrible design that leads to having zero clue which weapons you have + how much ammo each has.. its just a gamble to which empty weapons you switch. One of the most horrible design choices that holds this game back to the max. Why should i play a arena shooter were i have to fight against an UI for simple informations? This Design choice was and is soloy there because of console players but holds back the entire community.
Finished the titanfall 2 video (amazing) and the daggerfall video (relatable) and now I’m here. First channel I’ve binged long form content from in a while
Awesome, I’m glad you’re enjoying it! This is another one that’s high on my list of favorites so it should be fun :)
Take a shot, every time that Salty Shrimp says: “Alex Mercer is dead” or “Heller is an asshole” 😂
Damn did I say it that many times I don’t remember LMAO
@@saltyshrimppasta you said the first at least 5 times, and the second at least 5 or 6 times
@@TheClumsyXeno I hope you can hold your alcohol then 😎
He knows about the betrayal because he’s feeling thousands of his brethren begin to get slaughtered en masse across the galaxy. Yoda does literally the exact same thing in episode 3.
Yoda does yes, but not immediately after the transmission comes in, and none of the other Jedi who got killed saw it coming. That was more my point, that it seemed extremely fast compared to how the movie presents it. It’s honestly not the worst thing and is probably more of a nit pick, but it still stuck out to me as odd while playing.
@@saltyshrimppasta i’m not a super lore freak, so I’m not particularly sure how powerful this Jedi is. But yeah, it just seems like poor pacing that the transmission was literally still active when he realize what was happening.
@@IAmJunker Same I don’t know a ton about Jedi power levels or the extended canon. I just remember going “huh that was a bit quick,” so you’re right about it just being poorly paced. Personally, I think it makes more sense for you have overheard the transmission, Tapal (I think his name was) asking about it and then springing into action when they start shooting. That would’ve been pretty cool.
@@saltyshrimppasta great video by the way, I just finished it. I’ve been listening in pieces at work and I enjoyed your dead space, greedfall, and prototype videos as well. Just started the titanfall one a minute ago.
@@IAmJunker thanks dude! The Titanfall one is probably one of my favorites so I hope you like it :)
I feel that the reason the two games have different tones, is because Mercer and Heller have different worldviews, Mercer sees the world as morally gray, while Heller sees the world morally black and white. Nothing truly changes about the world, or the parties at play, but rather due to the two’s respective views, different aspects of the parties are shown. But that's my two cents about it honestly.
Honestly considering they chose to do the cutscenes in a black and white style, you may be onto something
Facts: Prototype 2 is the sequel to Prototype 1 and made a lot of stuff better
TRUE
Best hat designers worked this game.
2:12:03 Typo in the dialogue attests to crunch condition. Even hacks can proofread & don't use the same word 3x in a sentence. The ideas are derivative but not bad, so evidence is mounting this needed more time + care. 2:14:22 you "renege" on a promise; you don't "renigg" were they thinking this relates to the slur? Gross. Considering I'm working & looking at the screen in glances, finding typos within dialogue minutes apart still underlines the thrown-together feel the game has. lol then SSP casually drops "execute" over Kurt bleeding out; just freewheeling on the writers.
It’s also worth pointing out that the studio is French and we don’t know the quality of their localizers. It can be difficult to catch things like that if you’re not a native English speaker
the moment I realized they were on the normal version of the game instead of DU: 💀 (I don't remember how good DU was in early 2021, though I think it was still better than DOS)
They need to sell the IP, and have the two games remade from the ground up. Bring improvements to both; the combat, cutscenes, and quests to the first game; the story, quests, and pacing of the second. Prototype deserves another shot.
I don't understand how Castle Wayrest gets so much hate when Tomb of Lysandus is right there
I feel like I didn’t have nearly as much trouble with that one. By that point in the game I was pretty comfortable with the dungeon crawling and only really remember the elevator being a bit janky.
@@saltyshrimppasta Tomb of king Lysandus actually took me hours, especially around the weird part with all the copy-pasted dirt ramps, wayrest was actually one of the shorter ones for me, although I guess it mostly depends on what side you explore first
@@c_ornato I always find it interesting how difficulty can vary wildly for certain people. The main thing I remember about Wayrest is that half-wall blocking me for several hours and being unable to explore that flooded section, but I remember next to nothing about Lysandrus’ Tomb, except a hallway full of spiders and the elevator leading to his crypt.
Part 2 when?
On the Elizabeth Greene boss fight, my strategy of defeating her was spamming the tendrils ability, and in order to always be able to use that ability, I'm thankful for the hunters chasing me, because consuming them gives you the ability back almost immediately.
Ever seen a video on this game by "Tehsnakerer?" You make a lot of similar points to him. I do like your video, but I liked his too :).
I have! I was about halfway finished with my recording when I saw it, and I only did a second playthrough because of it (that’s how I learned about the divergence in Act 1). I tried not to be too similar but I did agree on a lot of his points, so there was inevitably going to be some crossover
@@saltyshrimppasta I think he focused more on the flaws in storytelling, while you primarily covered how the lockout abilities (strength, magic, charisma, etc.) ruined gameplay flow - and you both agreed it took forever. Granted, I'm only a little past halfway through your video, but it seems to be going in that direction. It's just funny. I'll listen to yours for 30 minutes, then suddenly I'll go "That's a Tehsnakerer point!" Then I'll listen for another 30, then "Hey! Tehsnakerer said that!" Not saying it's happening constantly, just funny when it does happen. And they're such obvious points that I'm such you came up with at least some yourself. But even if you didn't, it was just funny to me. Like I said, I liked his video and I like your video :).
I never played this to go about completing it. I kust enjoyed leveling up and creating as much chaos as possible
Pre-ordered Prototype in 2008, loved it to death...bought alex jacket one day❤ 2econd part only played once...good gameplay but i hated this bull**it storyline givin alex a cliche change into a cliche antiprotagonist and especially james "mofo - i fit better into a fu***ing rockstar game" heller. Oh, he is looking for his daughter who was kidnapped and his secret partner is a religion host...did the storywriter figured that out on his own? Was so disappointed...
i think he's higher rank than the others thats why they follow your orders at the beach his helmet has a brush the others dont.. plus his father was on the sanate so he's not just a foot soldier maybe a lieutenant
Honestly I never even thought about that. I know next to nothing about Rome or it’s military structure, so I always assumed this was his first real deployment since the mission comes right after the tutorial
You're not the only one who didn't find the Dead Space games scary. I enjoy them but their in-your-face, howling like a nutter, violin string scream brand of horror felt so antithetical to fear.
I liked Prototype 2 more, ngl.
Even though I haven't played any of the GoW games (I do plan to though), I still found the preview to be very interesting, and overall a lot more nuanced than a lot of other people I've seen online. Only thing I disagree with is about at least finishing a game *once* before critiquing it, I think that twice should be the bare minimum, no I'm not gonna tell someone to force themselves to play through something they didn't enjoy the first time, but if a person is going to share their opinion for everyone on the internet to see, then I think they should. More often than not thoughts on a game tend to be more developed on repeated playthroughs, a single one doesn't cut it a lot of the time, especially on a game with a huge emphasis on combat such as this one. I wouldn't listen to a review that only finished a DMC game once and think they know everything about it already.
I 100% agree with you, twice is the bare minimum, but some games I can understand people not wanting to play more than once. Ironically, I almost did a video years ago where I did a single playthrough of every DMC game but it never saw the light of day
@@saltyshrimppasta DMC2 is the only one that can be reviewed after a single playthrough lol
I don’t know if you figured it out already but a Reaper tip: if you save your project first to a specific folder, all your recordings will be saved to that folder so you wouldn’t have to search through REAPER MEDIA.
i'm going to be honest, i somewhat dislike the art direction prototype 2 went with. i don't care how cool it looks, it felt out of place that there was so many glowy lights everywhere. now you have glowing virus flesh to make it obviously red virus scary. you have blackwatch that decided to make their troopers look like alex mercer in black-ops uniform, with the hood and all the unecessary blue glowing light thingies. i much preferred how gritty prototype 2 felt, in how the blood and the flesh was visceral, and the military felt like a legitimate military. and i'm still somewhat annoyed that prototype 2 never allowed us to combine two powers together like i initially believed, since i always liked the idea of fighting with a claw and blade arm.
Disagree on the first game being better. The second was more fun in almost every way. I've replayed it several times and haven't been able to stomach a replay of the first more than part way through. The second game was just a great power fantasy. One of my favorite games. The cliche bad guys seem a small issue compared to how fun it is
I just realised how old this video is, but even still I want to say that i personally disagree regarding the story of doom eternal not being that bad (for context I’m 1 hour in the video.) Whilst I do sometimes love simple and fun games where you don’t have to think too much about the story, you just go, I do still like to have some semblance of what I’m doing, why I’m doing it and how I got to that conclusion. Doom 1 was fine, it was more simplistic, story was a bit more restricted and I think that’s a good thing. Did I know what the well of souls was? No, but I at least understood most of the game. Repair the satellite, stop the lady, escape from hell. I understood it and I think it was just complex enough to pull people in. Eternal, however, whilst I prefer the combat, and I can enjoy the story now after spending time catching up on the history, I was utterly, completely confused when it first came out. Sure, that’s somewhat incentive to get all the codex entries, but coming off the last game where the slayer was sent away, to suddenly being in a fortress with earth nearly lost. It was whiplash, and the story didn’t help relieve it as I was thrown to different locations that the slayer knew yet I did not. Now, I do think more research should of been done on my part, however I personally think If I have to research just to understand who the central characters are of a game without it being better explained, it’s a fault of the game for not doing so. I know it’s a lot of complaining, but I do like the game, I just wish it flowed better between 2016 to eternal with the story aspect.
Apparently I forgot to reply to this one so sorry this is late: 100% agree that Doom 2016’s story was paced and told MUCH better than Eternal, but I find Eternal more interesting from a purely narrative/lore perspective. I go back and forth about which is my favorite, but 2016 wins out by not confusing the player with “wtf is going on” until arguably the last mission.
@@saltyshrimppasta No need to apologise, thanks for getting back to me. I fully agree concerning the lore and interest. Mt provide with the story stems from a desire to know more because it is all so interesting. It intrigued me enough to look into said lore, I simply wish it was a bit better laid out in the story so I understood the people and the places more. It is also my fault for not looking into 2016’s story more as it talks about several things that do relate to Eternal. I’d say without external knowledge I’d agree with you, 2016 being better, but with lore knowledge I think I do prefer Eternal.
I don’t remember how many times I played and beat prototype one of my favorite games
daggerfall's dungeons are terrifying. always make me feel like i'm lost forever
