Where were all the type 9s at. I see not even one in this video. That’s weird. 🤔 New trains should be showing up at least once or twice in a 13 minute video.

3887 was put into service in late 2008 along with 3885, 3886, 3888, 3889, 3890, 3891, 3892, 3893 and 3894 and in late 2007, the T announced that it had contracted with Breda to deliver another 10 cars. This would bring the total number to 95 production cars and five spare shells retained for parts and to possibly fix wreck rebuilds in the future. It was only 13 years old as of December 2021 and 12 years old in December 2020. 3861 was built and delivered in 2004 and accepted for service in the same year. 3610 was built and delivered in March 1986 and entered service in October 1986. 3891 was also only 12 years old in December 2020. 3877, 3878 and 3879 were built and delivered in February 2006 and accepted in May 2006. 3880 (and its test mate 3881) were delivered in March 2006 and accepted for service on June 14, 2006. As of December 31, 2020, the Kinki Sharyo cars still made up the bulk of Green Line rolling stock alongside the newer Breda cars.

3807 was originally accepted in 2001, but damaged in a derailment in August of that year and sent back to Breda to be remanufactured and turned into a new working car with parts from the original 3807. The new 3807 entered service in 2007. The original damaged sections of 3807 are stored in Everett Yard. The 2nd car still retains the number 3807, replacement for 1st car which was damaged from a derailment in August 2001. September 2004-Acceptance of cars stopped after 3864 entered service. October 28, 2004-Car 3827 derailed at the turn-back beyond North Station under the Fleet Center. December 12, 2004-In a Boston Globe article, the MBTA announced that they were halting the contract with Breda because of poor car reliability and a lack of response from Breda to correct problems. No more cars were to be delivered beyond the 40 accepted cars, 5 unaccepted production cars and the original two pilot cars. The MBTA will work directly with suppliers to modify 10 cars to improve reliability as part of a pilot program to modify and retain these 47 cars. The article suggested that if problems cannot be resolved with Breda, then the MBTA could be interested in negotiating a new contract with another builder, possibly Kinki-Sharyo, to buy enough additional new cars required to retire the Boeing fleet. It was not certain if the possible new order would be for a new low-floor design or for more Type 7s. Ordering Type 7s would require using wayside lift or ramp devices as the permanent, rather than interim, means of wheelchair access. The last Type 8 cars delivered were in August 2004, while no additional cars have been accepted since September 2004. The article also stated it was unclear if the Type 8s could ever run in revenue service on the Riverside line again because of the higher operating speeds and the possibility of derailments. April 2005-Car 3869 was accepted, remaining unaccepted cars already on MBTA property are expected to be accepted. October 2005: The number of cars to be modified has been increased from 10 to 20, later increased to 42. Cars modified to improve reliability: 3802, 3803, 3804, 3805, 3806, 3808, 3809, 3810, 3811, 3812, 3813, 3814, 3816, 3819, 3820, 3821, 3822, 3823, 3824, 3825, 3827, 3834, 3840, 3841, 3846, 3847, 3854, 3855, 3857, 3858, 3859, 3861, 3862, 3863, 3864, 3866, 3867, 3868, 3869, 3870, 3875 November 2005: Car 3874 was delivered to the MBTA, the first new Type 8 delivered since August 2004. January 31, 2006: Type 8 operation on Beacon Street resumed. December 30, 2006: Type 8 operation to Heath St. resumed for first time since brief operation in 2004, Type 8 service to Lechmere resumed for first time since 2000. December 1, 2008: Type 8 revenue operation on the Riverside line resumed for the first time since July 2000. 3800, first original pilot car, delivered on January 31, 1998, returned to Breda in the summer of 1999, remanufactured and redelivered to MBTA in 2007. 3801, the second original pilot car, delivered on February 26, 1998, returned to Breda in the summer of 1999, also to be remanufactured and redelivered to MBTA in 2004. 3879-wrecked in derailment/fire 05/08, moved to new security training facility at Broadway station 01/13 as static training equipment, all mechanical equipment removed from car, this car is no longer counted as part of the revenue fleet 4 additional incomplete Type 8 shells and the damaged sections of original car 3807 are stored at Orient Heights (formerly stored at Everett). This is to train emergency training center employees for training aid and the car is used for static display. Car 3879 was stored in damaged condition at Riverside Yard until January 2013 when it was fixed, but was permanently retired and no longer counted as being part of the revenue fleet. In a Boston Globe article posted on May 20, 2008, it was stated that 3879 was a $3 million loss for the T. Type 8s use Adtranz/Bombardier Electric Equipment, Type 7s use Westinghouse Electric Systems, Type 7.5s use Adtranz and Type 9s use MELCO.

It was 21 years old in December 2020. 3824 was delivered in 2001 and entered service in 2003. It was in testing for two years.

This brought the total order to 95 production cars and five car shells retained for spare parts. From the contract with Breda, the T was actually receiving a quality product.

On December 31, 2004, a lawsuit was given against the manufacturer, Breda from MBTA for failing to deliver the cars on-time, on-budget and efficiently and their failing attempt to usher the Green Line into a new state of user-friendly service. The new cars arrived with a thud-literally. T officials threatened to terminate their US$225 million deal with the Italian train maker and halt payments after only having 46 cars of their 100-car order on hand by that time which was 9.5 years after the formal NTP of May 1995. The T also wanted to reduce their order from 100 cars to 80 cars due to all of the high-profile derailments and incidents, horrible braking performance and other problems that plagued them from when they first entered service to now. The T paid roughly US$150 million to Breda since 1998 by the tail end of 2004. The T wanted to get rid of the trouble-plagued Boeings due to them showing their age by the mid 1990s and modernize the Green Line with a new feature of ADA handicapped accessibility which a law was passed in the year 1990 called the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which required all public transit to be fully accessible for the public and the T had to obey this law because it was a public transportation system meaning that everyone (all people of all abilities) use it every year to commute to and from work and school. The plan was to purchase new low-floor streetcars with the T announcing it in late 1990. In December 1994, the T issued request for proposals to manufacturers who would be willing to submit bids to build the new cars. Three submitted bids: AnsaldoBreda (Breda) of Italy, Bombardier Transportation and Siemens Mobility both from Germany. The T later found out that Siemens and Bombardier had proposals that were to costly and Siemens agreed to built the cars at a cost of $299 million and Bombardier had $340 million which was too much for the T to pay. Breda agreed to build the cars for $225 million. The T found out that their proposal was lower than the other two companies that submitted bids and Breda was awarded the contract to furnish 100 low-floor wheelchair-accessible No. 8 Green Line Light Rail Vehicles, for $225 million on February 8, 1995. In mid-1996, the T received a mock-up delivered from Breda’s facility in Pistoia, Italy and displayed inside the Riverside Carhouse for T officials to review it and give their feedback. They liked the design, gave it a thumbs up and reported positive feedback to the manufacturer, allowing for full production of the Type 8s to commence. At the time, a pilot car was slated to be delivered 42 months after the formal NTP of May 12, 1995, or November 12, 1998, production deliveries were to start 51 months after NTP, or August 12, 1999, with the 100th car scheduled to arrive roughly 67 months after the formal NTP, or December 12, 2000. The T decided to rebuild the Boeing Vertol cars because they knew the Type 8 fleet would be beset by various problems delaying the full rollout by nearly a decade. The last of the Boeing cars were pulled from service in 2007 by which point they were doing one to two trips per day on average and this was six years after their San Fransisco counterparts were pulled from service in 2001. By the time they were pulled from service in 2007, they had survived a rebuild and almost 30 years of rumbling through Boston, a consequence of the delayed delivery completion of the Type 8s. The LRVs’ problems mainly came from their previous trouble-plagued “plug” style doors which would often re-cycle, jam or malfunction frequently injuring multiple passengers and even drivers, were replaced with basic, white and reliable folding doors during their 1996-98 rehabilitation by Morrison-Knudsen in Hornell, NY. This rebuild was to ensure reliable operation and for the fleet to hold the fort without experiencing serious mechanical issues or shitting the bed while the T patiently waited for the Type 8s to arrive.

The Type 7.5s were originally built with black floors, black set cushions and door chimes. During overhaul by Alstom, most of these features were kept the same but they were fully refurbished with a new door chime which is a set of three beeps. The interior upholstery and presence of door chimes differed from the 3600s, but they were otherwise largely identical. No. 3699 shows the fleet’s as-delivered green-and-white paint scheme, which was retained through the 1990s, as well as their original mylar rollsigns. These cars were delivered beginning in 1985 and were noticeably different from their LRV predecessors, particularly in their streamlined design and more solid-center articulation. This teal and grey paint scheme from the 1990s was meant to mimic the paint scheme on the forthcoming Type 8 cars (the trailer car in this photo is a Type 8). No. 3679 spots the third major paint scheme for the cars, reverting somewhat to their original paint scheme. However, as evidenced in this photo, no attempt has been made to match or complement the Type 8’s paint scheme.

I suppose they are still using two employees for each train? The one in the front drives. And at above-ground stops, checks that you've paid your fare. While the person in the second streetcar is just there to check you've paid. That must be an easy job, although it may be boring, considering all the underground stations where you don't have to check anything because everyone pays before they get to the platform.
