I have fun working with satellite weather images and with the exciting images we've been receiving from the James Webb Space Telescope. I enjoy the creativity of making these videos and hope to interest others in the cosmos.
I find watching cloud movement very relaxing - perhaps you will too.

Timelapse of Hurricane Oscar 4K UHD NOAA Satellite Images with Gulf of Mexico and US Oct. 2024 GOES
Hurricane Oscar flooded parts of Cuba. This 4K UHD color video is composed of thousands of NOAA day and night high resolution images of the Continental US for October 18, 2024 through October 23, 2024. Synchronized with 18 global satellite images per second, 1 1/2 hours of real-time weather are viewed each second.
Credit goes to CIRA/NOAA for the GeoColor imagery.
GeoColor is a multispectral product composed of True Color (using a simulated green component) during daytime, and an Infrared product that uses bands 7 and 13 at night. During the day, the imagery looks approximately as it would when viewed with human eyes from space. At night, the blue colors represent liquid water clouds such as fog and stratus, while gray to white indicate higher ice clouds, and the city lights come from a static database derived from the VIIRS Day Night Band.
GeoColor was developed at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) and the STAR Regional and Mesoscale Meteorology Branch (RAMMB).
NOTE: Lighted areas shown in nighttime images are not real-time depictions of city lights. The layer is derived from a compilation of JPSS VIIRS Day Night Band images and is included for orientation purposes.
The music is "On the Rise" by Liborio Conti.

Which is stronger typhoon haiyan or hurrican milton
Definitely Typhoon Haiyan was stronger. According to Wikipedia, Typhoon Haiyan's highest winds were 230 km/h (145 mph) while Hurricane Milton's highest winds were 180 mph (285 km/h). One death is one too many, but worst of all was 6,352 deaths and 1,071 missing from Typhoon Haiyan (6,300 deaths in the Philippines!) and 35 deaths from Hurricane Milton (3 in Yucatán, Mexico and 32 in Florida, USA).
0:54 is milton
Hurricane Milton was a punk bitch... Thankfully we had that dry air and vertical shear kick in before landfall which downgraded it from a Cat 5 to a low Cat 3. It still caused widespread damages but it could have been much worse.
Florida actually got sort of lucky. It went south of Tampa, and the south side of the storm fizzled (which is where the strongest wind would have been)
I'm glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been there. 🙂

Why were the lights still on
Thanks for asking. It's a map overlay of city lights if you will. The descriptions of my videos include: "At night, the blue colors represent liquid water clouds such as fog and stratus, while gray to white indicate higher ice clouds, and the city lights come from a static database derived from the VIIRS Day Night Band." The white and gray bands are created from data the satellite gathers when the Earth is dark underneath it. I hope this helps.
@@MichaelLaman had to be. It would have been cooler to see the map reflect the power outages but that's just my opinion. I was on the north east part of the storm and my entire county lost power. It would have added to the dramatic effect to show the reach of the damaging winds
@@libbyliberty2885 I hope you and family are fine. I agree that seeing the wave of blackouts would be cool - certainly more informative. The GOES weather satellites are not "spy"/surveillance/reconnaissance satellites so the night time is completely black - completely. I've made a few vidoes from the Himawari satellite (e.g. Typhoon Ampil) and I had to cut out the black sections and fade clips together. Without the cities for orientation there is nothing(!) to see. Thank you for your reply. 🙂

For me Milton probably peaked a bit more than 180mph in my estimates around 185mph and a central pressure between 890-897mb.
That thing was headed straight at me, here in Clearwater. If it had made landfall 20 miles north of where it did, it would have been a disaster of a historic scale. We really dodged another bullet.
Strange. If you look at the lights near landfall the night before and rescale and align with the night after, the lights from the power grid look identical: looks like just as many on after the storm as before. I would have expected to see a dark swath or a notable difference in artificial light before/after. Is the map just an overlay and the artificial light patterns not realtime?
Good question @mikeyc8139. Thanks for asking. It's a map overlay of city lights if you will. The descriptions of my videos include: "At night, the blue colors represent liquid water clouds such as fog and stratus, while gray to white indicate higher ice clouds, and the city lights come from a static database derived from the VIIRS Day Night Band." The Hurricane IS OVER Let it GO AND GET OVER IT!
Katrina was 19 years ago and people still aren’t over that
This isn’t real satellite photos. Other wise you would see Central Florida go dark when the power got knocked out.
Yes, the description describes the data used to create the evening images rather that just complete black. The satellite's instruments gather nonvisible information all the time (for example water vapor at different band levels). The created images do well at giving us a great representation of what we'd see from satellite if there was sunlight. Note: I had to cut out a lot of black frames and merge sections together for my Typhoon Ampil video to make it watchable.
@@MichaelLamanthank you for the explanation.
This is a video I've been looking forward to seeing! Thanks so much for posting.
That wind sheer is no joke for hurricanes. Really tears them apart. Imagine if the wind sheer wasn't there. Probably still would have been weaker but definitely still a low end cat 5 hurricane.
Hurricane are actually just big babies.
Luckily it encountered some wind shear and settled down to a Cat 3 before landfall. It could have been much worse.
I searched for a satellite-track loop a few days ago, couldn't find anything on UA-cam. This happened to pop up on my feed today! Thanks for uploading 👍
I'm glad you like it. I like a video that shows the entire life-cycle. Unfortunately for me that means I have to post later than others so thanks for the encouragement. Many more satellite tracking vidoes to come.
Tracking this was surely... fun
Totally-
Why so blurry?
I would say because weather satellites are not surveillance/military/spy satellites, so they don't need to record with such precision. I use the highest resolution images as much as possible - I too like the detail such as the daytime detail of around the eye of the hurricane. High resolution makes a big difference but it certainly takes more time and effort. Also keep in mind that the GOES satellite is in a geosynchronous orbit so it's effectively stationary over a fix point in the sky relative to us on Earth - which is not how you want a spy satellite whose orbit moves it around the world. I hope this helps. The description has more details. Thanks for your comment. 🙂
@@MichaelLaman thx for the detailed explanation. Well deserved like and great vid!
Hurricanes exhaust the oceans heat content as part of a very complex system on earth. No matter what you believe about hurricanes, the reason they exist stay the same.
Wow I can see my house from here
Cool to watch
The amount of rain it sent while developing was insane..
