The group's only current members are Kevin Conneff and Matt Molloy, who first joined in 1976 and 1979 respectively. Sean Keane, who played fiddle alongside Martin Fay from 1968 to 2002, died in 2023.

Paddy Moloney also appeared on ex-Eagle Don Henley's 1982 debut solo release, I Can't Stand Still; he played the tin whistle on "La Eile" (Irish for "another day") and Uilleann pipes on "Lilah."

I saw the Chieftains perform on the back of a lorry in Bantry, Co Cork (in the '90's)....... I had no idea they were going to be there and loved them already...... jaw dropping stuff.

Oh Jesus what a moving video, I can’t keep from shed tears. 😢 I’m from Italy and I love Chieftains since the first time I listened them in a live concert in 1992 in Italy… however I think their music goes beyond their lives as it’s kept in the hearts of those who loves them like me. Thank you Chieftains.

Yes, there should be a documentary on the Chieftains. This band were at their peak ever since they'd added Derek Bell, on harp and keyboards, in 1974 which brought the total number of members of this band to seven. The band didn't miss a beat in 1979 when longtime members Sean Potts and Michael Tubridy left.

Paddy was a bit of a divell but you need a man like him in a band to make it big.. a character or two does the job.

I don't consider The Chieftans a true Celtic Band untill they play a real Bagpipe? An Authenic Bagpipe is to Celtic music,as a Mandolin is to Italian Music.

I had the extreme pleasure of meeting with and working at a Mary Black concert many years ago at a festival in Donegal. The first thing that struck me was her eyes, just beautiful. Her demeanor and manner was nothing but adorable. She was friendly, polite, appreciative and obliging. The concert was exceptional. I have been a die hard fan ever since. A true Irish legend. Thanks for all the pleasure you brought and continue to bring.

I just found out that Paddy passed away three weeks ago.... I am so sad now, but happy to have met him once and seen them in concert at least a half dozen times in my life. My wife and I went to a concert in February 2020 in Berkley, CA and I think that was one of the last concerts they gave before they stopped the tour because of COVID. I'm so grateful we were able to see him one last time before his passing. Rest in Peace Paddy, you wonderful ambasssador of Irish music and culture.

Never heard a Chieftans album I didn’t like. All wildly different, from near pop to sparse traditional but smoking good musicianship throughout.

There needs to be a feature film made about Paddy Maloney and the Chieftains! I'm just a housewife but I'll direct it myself! I can already see the scene where Paddy is skulking around the back streets of Dublin with his trad instruments so's not to be bullied and that extremely emotional moment in the Royal Albert. Interspersed with personal moments with wives etc. when they went professional. These are true trailblazers!

I second that! The six-man lineup that existed from 1979 to 2002 which had captured the hearts of millions the world over included Moloney with Martin Fay, Sean Keane, Derek Bell, Kevin Conneff and Matt Molloy.
