Breaking Dawn Through Winter Mist | Expressive Abstract Landscape
Watch the creation of Breaking Dawn Through Winter Mist, an expressive abstract landscape inspired by the quiet beauty of a winter morning. Using a limited palette of blues and greys, I explore the interplay of light and shadow to evoke the stillness and movement of dawn breaking through mist.
In this video I demonstrate my loose and free painting process, using pastels to map out light and dark areas before layering with a palette knife, catalyst wedge, mop brush and sponge. Watch as the piece unfolds with soft contrasts, delicate textures and emotional depth.

In this episode of Totally Abstracted I explore the art of texture and its transformative role in abstract landscapes. I discuss how texture can bring life and depth to a painting though two key types of texture: physical and visual. Physical texture, which viewers can feel, adds tangible depth to artwork through mediums like glass bead gel for a shimmering effect, modelling paste for sculptura...

Overcoming Creative Blocks: Reignite Your Artistic Spark
Hi Michelle, you are such an inspiration to me! Can I ask, in you're painting demonstrations you work very quickly, in real time, are you waiting for layers to dry before you go on? I love your work 🙏
Thank you so much. I really appreciate that. With the paintings in the videos I paint wet on wet and don't wait for layers to dry. I'm so impatient! I do though have other pieces that I make myself stop and let dry (or use a hair dryer) & I have some pieces hanging up that have been waiting a long while for me to return to work on the next layer! So it's a bit of a mix.
How beautiful Michelle, so many layers. What is that wide tool that you use for blending?
Thank you! That tool is a catalyst wedge. I absolutely love it. I bought mine on Amazon. You can get different sizes/edges. I got mine when I was painting with oils and cold wax medium as it's perfect for that, but then I started using it with acrylics too. Aside from the mop brush I rarely uses brushes these days!
Thanks Michelle, I need to get one of those!
@@rachalthomson801 I really love mine. I bought some silicon brushes that are meant to be similar but they just don't feel the same to me. But I really need to clean my catalyst wedge - as you can see in the videos!
Michelle, I am a new subscriber. Just recently found you and just recently discovered abstract landscape art. What a happy pairing! I printed out your Ethereal Expression: Building depth and emotion .... Oh, how I love it! I followed instructions on how to do soft transitions and was delighted with the result. Thank you 🙏
Oh that's so lovely to read. So glad you've found the guide useful and well done on the soft transitions. They really create such a wonderful mood and atmosphere. I really do love abstract landscapes and it's lovely you have discovered them too.
Thank you for sharing your process. It really was magic to watch. Lovely work.
Thank you so much for watching & for such a lovely comment.
What a beautiful and calming video. I had to subscribe! Keep it up!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed watching it.
Beautiful!
Thank you :)
I love seeing the process of how you work! It's so fascinating! Are you self-taught, or did you attend a school of some sort?
Thank you. I studied art in school but nothing formal beyond that apart from the Evolve programme which I stopped part way through as realism just isn't for me (although it's an excellent programme and even in the short amount I did I learned a great deal). Mostly it's all been self study and experimentation. Once I discovered cold wax medium I really felt like I'd found my niche!
Nice sharing, it turned out amazing! Keep it up 👍
Thank you! I was pleased with it at the end!
Beautiful! I'd love to hear your explanations and tips on your videos
Thank you so much. Yes I definitely need to start doing videos where I talk through what I'm doing rather than just the time lapse ones. I'll start doing that asap. Thank you for your comment.
Fantastic 👏👏👏
Thank you Karen ❤
amazing talent 👏
Thank you Tony ♥
