Bell Ringing 8 Spliced Surprise Major at Morpeth
A guest band from York ringing an excellent touch of 8 Spliced Surprise Major at Morpeth Clock Tower on 28th December 2017.
The 8 methods were the Standard 8 Surprise Major methods (naturally). For non-ringers, these are Cambridge, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Superlative, Rutland, Pudsey, Bristol and London. Listen out for the conductor changing the method. We join the ringing in Superlative Surprise Major as the Pudsey Surprise Major that preceded it was not recorded.

Absolutely gorgeous bells. Shame they aren't full circle!
They're really fine toned. Canon Simpson supposedly oversaw their tuning in 1899. Happily, they are cast to ringing profiles so the light bells wouldn't need recasting if converted to full circle.

Agree they sound like church that has me for weddings
Classic Taylor peal. They sound lovely. Not perfect ringing, but then I'm not the perfect ringer either. But it is always lovely and the striking is good and you don't loose your place. Me, I just put it down to chronic senior moments. For some reason Taylor bells, especially the tenors seem to sound better pre WW2. New bells whilst lovely seem to sound a bit doughy.
I spent a night in morpeth in 1977 before it got carried away with itself.
