Why There's One More Final - End of Evangelion Analysis
Watching the End of Evangelion, one of my favorite movies, in the theater back in March helped me finally put into words what exactly the final scene means to me, and some problems I have with how other people on the internet talk about it. It's not a lot to go over, but it's something very important that people still tend to miss, somehow.
Song list:

    Wow I literally just rewatched this movie! Didn't understand that scene at all but thanks to this vid I think I get it. I want to add that I don't think the scene is as pessimistic as it seems. I read it as Shinji and Asuka being forced into making the first step of progress towards connection. Their actions (Shinji choking her, Asuka lightly raising her hand to his face) are really far from their normal personalities that clash so much earlier in the show and prevent them from understanding each other. But now they're forced as close to each other as they have ever been (since the kiss, which was also out of character), and while they don't yet know how to handle it, their shells are starting to crack. Maybe that read is too optimistic, but I'd like to believe that the movie is saying that Shinji took a difficult road, not an impossible one.

    If you are a good person, then seeing others happy and thriving will make you happier. But if it brings you no joy, you may just be pretending to be one. Yes, the path of kindness isn't always easy. You will face struggles and overcome barriers, but isn't that like everyone else's journey, good or bad? And in the end, seeing the fruit of your kindness reflected in the smiles of others brings a deep sense of satisfaction. Isn't that reward enough? That's how I convince myself to choose goodness, instead of expecting a reward that I might get in the afterlife.

    Love guren lagan. As an adhd kid this was something i really klicked with. The hyperactivety and over the top energy of kamina was awesome. Then he died and I had to figure out what the rest of the show was actually about. Strangly enough it had the same impact as Berserk did later in my life. Seeing despair and CHOOSING to fight it and actually find peace an joy. I think it comes down to a lot of what most lifelessons get right. We know all these messages, they are told to us again and again. What makes us really understand these messages is a moment of realisation. Art is one way that can make you realy feel and reallise what a certain concept really means. This is the real power of media. For instance, knowing that a lot of people suffer is one thing. Now really think about how many times you yourself suffer. Now really immagine your family has these same feelings. Now expand that immagination to the people in your street. Now expand that to the people in your town. Now to your state, to your country, to the rest of the world. By really engaging with this idea you begin to realize more, even though you probably knew this. This playing with scale and ideas, always pushing further, expanding your realization is what guren lagan is so great at.

    Doing your best to be a good person is objectively better. Others will like you, trust you, and essentially will always be happy to offer you help or opportunities. You can’t get far alone no matter how great you are. In my entire life there was only one person who did not reciprocate, the last I heard of em they were pretty much at the very bottom.

    I know Im late to the argument, but here my biggest problem with the whole thing. Everyone denounces Eren for comitting mass genocide, because genocide is wrong. Yes. Its wrong, but in the way Isayama has set up this particular story, all other options will end up with the mass genocide of the Eldians. So when I see people argue that Eren had no right to do it, WITHOUT a better option, they are also saying that the Eldian people should just let the world commit genocode on them. Because like it or not, had Eren not done what he did, that is what would have happened. So take out Erens personal reason fpr doing it, and logically tell me what other option would have saved both sides within the confines of what Isayama layed out?

    10:05 i don't like how the live action ice spikes scene makes it seem like katara completely gave up, the attack just feels super avoidable. she just flails around a bit then stands in shock as the spikes move in to trap her. on the other hand, the animated version shows the attack as very fast, unavoidable, and final (especially since she just got up) and she looks pissed and struggles as soon as she realizes she's trapped

    It should be noted that live-action will never be able to completely copy everything from the original animated series. So some adjustments are required and when they happened, they led to series of issues that needed to find their own solutions, one way or another. Like in this very scene, changing angles of cameras is important in order to compensate what only animation can do. Also, I'm sorry I missed the first Avatar video on your channel. I forgot about it. So my apology. And the Heraclius Plan is now available on Reddit. I got someone to help me to do it and there are now two posts about it. You can find them there easily by easy search via Google, I think.

    • @chryysanth
      @chryysanth 17 днів тому

      I agree that some changes are necessary to make a live action adaptation. My problem, though, is that the adjustments it makes don't actually make it better. Like I said in the main video, my problem with the live action scene isn't that it's different, but that it's noticeably just bad on its own, and when you compare it to the original you realize that it really didn't need to be that way. Also I just read through the Heraclius Plan. I think it's pretty solid; I like seeing stuff like this of other possible plans that could've happened. Personally I think allying with the Mid East forces or at least attacking Marley while they were at war, and then using that as leverage to establish diplomatic relations with other countries is the clearest path. But you've laid it out in much greater detail which is cool. Makes me feel even more that the 4 year time skip was too glossed over

    • @lerneanlion

      @@chryysanth Thanks for the reply. So in the end, some series are better off as animated series because there are stuffs where live-action series cannot do and vice versa. And will you do a video about it? You know, making the people know about the Heraclius Plan so they can finally know there is an alternative to the Rumbling.

    • @chryysanth
      @chryysanth 16 днів тому

      At some point I want to make another video about alternatives to the rumbling and I would definitely draw on stuff that you've talked about, both in that reddit post and other comments you've made. I've been on AoT cooldown for a while now though. • @lerneanlion
      @lerneanlion 16 днів тому

      @@chryysanth It's okay. I can waited. Also, that account is not actually mine. I just asked someone to post it for me. And recently, I've been diving more and more into the stuffs from the Victorian Era and I cannot helped but wondering that aside from the civil war, what else Marley will be facing? Obviously, they might hated the Eldians of Paradis Island even more and will definitely desired for revenge like the French in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War. At least, that's the myth and/or propaganda about it because most of the French public and the elites did not actually care about retaking Alsace-Lorraine until World War I erupted. But anything else? For example, if Onyankopon's homeland can regain independence, will Marley be facing something similar to the Revolutions of 1848 that happened across Europe as well? And if they happened at the same time at the civil war or in the civil war's immediate aftermath, I feared Marley's purpose as the loomng threat that will keep the alliance between Eldia and the Mid-East Eyalets alive will be no more if these revolutions emerged victorious. Yes, this will given Eldia more time to modernize but the problem is that if they won, the alliance between Eldia and the nations of the Mid-East might be no more. But if Marley managed to defeat these revolutions but its current government still lost in the civil war, it will be a win-win because Marley will still be the looming threat that keep the alliance between Eldia and the Mid-East Eyalets alive and Paradis Island will still have enough more time to modernize as well.

    When I was younger I would try so hard to be a good person, than I experienced being greatly hurt and disappointed by others taking advantage and betray that kindness. the only instinct that we for sure have is to survive, and its madness to keep doing the same thing and expect different results. That doesn't mean I have no empathy or have to act wicked but my experience has lead me to believe that being skeptical of people is a must, and if I try too much it'll get exploited by bad actors. I very much want to believe that not all people are as wicked as this but so far I've got no evidence to support this. I don't think I'm holier than thou, I'm very much part of the problem. I don't blame others either because I don't think anyone has the free will to choose what they want to do. Our survival mechanism makes us have limits to the amount of other peoples shit we can take, especially if we don't have the facilities to offload any of it. With the way the world works with trampling others typically is beneficial to you and helping others is detrimental in terms of materialism, can you blame people for being jaded?

    9:31 I think another problem with the live action cut always is repetition. In the three animated cutaways each one has a distinctive purpose. One is a joke and pallet cleanser, another is a show of encouragement, and the third is a show of concern with different angles different emotional responses and different crowd layouts. In the live action it feels like each cutaway is just the same one repeated with a different emotional gesture but besides that lacks any distinction.

Sometimes we need stuff that is just blindingly optimistic because it's so easy to get bogged down by all the problems in the world and how it feels like we don't have the power to do anything about it. Maybe if we all let ourselves be corny, be silly, be endlessly driven to improve, maybe then we can break past all the things holding us as a collective down. Maybe we as humanity need to (metaphorically but also sorta literally) come together in the same way the characters do at the end of the series, bring all our wills together and force the systems that hold us down and tell us we can't do better to change, or destroy those systems if they refuse.

    Also notice how the author SKIPS over showing any peace talks armin worked out which somehow bought them decades maybe even centuries of peace? Know why? BECAUSE THATS LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE. The world hated Eldians the last 200 years. Then promised genocide. Eren hit them first. Left "equal military might in and outside the walls"...okay so the entire world hates you MORE now. The same one that promised to kill you. They will unite ASAP and attack because your titans are gone. Peace wouldnt even last ten years. Its bullshit. Isyama literally cant show you the peace talks because theyd be impossible to succeed.

    The alliance makes TOTAL SENSE if you are Annie and Reiner. Your objective was to protect your homeland from the rumbling by seizing the founder. The alliance makes ZERO SENSE for the rest. The world united and declared war. The global military alliance is the fleets of multiple first world countries promising the destroy the island and kill all of you and your fellow Eldians on Paradis. Eren using genocide is AFTER they promise at against you. So eren is PROTECTING you with the rumbling. If you stop him you leave your island vulnerable to extermination.
