Loved the podcast about this band. One of my favorites. I remember finding them on MySpace back in the day lol id listen to this stuff on an AOL speaker I got from my dad 😂 Anyway, Danza II is gold. The skits and everything. Maybe it’s nostalgia but that whole album is a vibe. By the time the other records came out; I felt like it was almost a standard to be as wanky and insane as you could in the scene. This band was really pushing the boundaries as well as other early bands in this genre before a lot of artists and a lot of standards started to cement. Thanks. Have a great one.

So your main issue with the movie is your own incorrect assumption that Laugier with Ghostland tried to make an "extreme horror" movie like the stupid, shallow, Terrifier-like dumpster fire that is High Tension, because you incorrectly think Martyrs is part of that genre as well just because it's very graphically violent and French. That's like calling any food that is spicy 'Indian' because you don't think for a second there can be any other type of spicy food. Laugier never labelled Martyrs as part of the French extremity movement. His movies are about emotions and trauma, not violence. The violence and brutality are a narrative means to an end, not the purpose of his movies itself. Watch his third movie, The Tall Man, for example. There's barely any violence in it (comparatively), but the same intense kind of emotional rollercoaster shines through anyway. You also apparently think Ghostland was an intellectual exercise in trying to be clever, but IMO the purpose was to create an intense emotional experience. And then later on you called it "too unintelligent to be able to say anything", because, again, you're trying to shoehorn it into your idea that it wants to be an intellectual movie, but that's just your incorrect assumption. A lot of Laugier's work has to do with points of views (he says so himself in interviews, criticizing modern movie for their omniscient, God-like cameras and narratives that don't make you emotionally engaged). You complained that the two villains had no extensive backstory, but that's because we see the whole movie through the eyes of Beth. I don't think she wondered for a second how the two psychos got together or what their underlying motivations were (if there were any, other than being sadistic sociopaths). The movie actively rejects the idea of telling a story from a fourth wall/omniscient point of view. It's about Beth's story, and if you didn't connect with that, if you were more interested in the villains and sad that there wasn't as much mindless vulgar gratuitous violence as in High Tension, I think all in all you've just completely missed the point of the movie. I think at some point you asked for whom that movie was made. I'll personally say, probably not you. The stars of the show were the two main characters and their emotional journey, but you barely mentioned them in-between describing your expectations for a Laugier/French extreme movie and how the movie falls short because it's not another slasher where the villains are the true protagonists of the movie, and it's not meta enough to be a good intellectual movie. You clearly spent so much time during your two watches of the movie waiting for something that was never meant to happen, that you didn't even pay attention to what was actually in it. And the line that sent you over the edge? "Incident in a Ghostland is her best novel yet"? Not even for a second did I take that to be Laugier talking about his own movie. Once again it feels like you didn't even try to engage with the story, constantly looking for third-person points of views or even fourth-wall-breaking Easter eggs, when all it really was about, was Beth once again trying to run away from a terrifying reality and seeking refuge into a self-indulging fantasy. You took that to be Laugier's point of view because you didn't get into Beth's story emotionally and expected just another Texas Chainsaw grindhouse or some intellectual exercise in meta discourse. The whole movie is about dealing with fear and trauma, and you completely missed it. The movie is titled like the book because that's her coping mechanism to survive. The movie was never about being 'transgressive' or 'gross' either. Again, you just got let down by your own expectations. Can't believe you ended your review recommending people to not even giving Ghostland a try and advising them to go watch the vulgar piece of crap that is High Tension. You said, "I don't know that High Tension is some work of genius or anything, but I just think that is a more palatable fun movie." Couldn't be more obvious once more that you completely missed the point of Ghostland if you expected it to be 'fun'.

Eighteen Visions were pioneers the whole way and they changed pretty much every album. Their earliest stuff is proto-deathcore and they perfected metallic hardcore by Until The Ink Runs Out. Even the lame stuff that preceded the hiatus (Obsession and the Self Titled*), those records were among the first where metalcore bands went in a more hard rock direction to chase the bag. What they've done since coming back, including both EPs, is generally a synthesis of everything up to and including Vanity, which is the pocket where they're best. *I don't think it's fair to say that it was people who wanted things to stay heavy disliked this album. I didn't know anyone at the time who didn't listen to at least some emo and pop-punk, but we all hated the self-titled. There's a reason the band broke up not long after releasing it, it's not what anyone who goes to shows wanted. Album sales only get you so far, you need to be able to tour.

I find it odd to be elitist about what one consumes. I could see it for something that requires more talent like actually playing music. I'm not totally against gatekeeping or elitism but i notice the J-Dawg like people who are metal fans and gatekeepers don't play an instrument. Too much time on their hands and all their pride and sense of identity is derived, again, from what they consume. Not what they create.

The argument in the beginning always makes me laugh! Dan: "You can't play the first Korn album in standard" Joe: "but Korn is not Thrash Metal" Dan: *abruptly gets triggered beyond belief* I agree that Joe wasnt making any sense, how does Nu Metal's tuning distinguish it's genre, but the same logic doesnt apply to thrash and death metal lol But now that you mention it, thrash and death metal are pretty similar, the main difference being harsh vocals vs clean. Slayer is brutal as hell but the only reason its not considered death metal is because he doesnt do harsh vocals. But his shouting is just as heavy as traditional harsh vox, the song Warzone from the God Hates Us All album to me is heavier than a TON of death metal songs.

Maynard actually said the only songs he helped write structurally on 10,000 Days are Jambi & The Pot, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't around for Rosetta Stoned as well as the Wings suite

@@wrendogg of course & thank u for an awesome show! I actually found it yesterday while looking up The Always Open Mouth, found your Fear Before episode was immediately hooked. FBTMOF is one of my favorite bands, but once i saw how many bands you cover I HAD to look for TOOL! Great discussion too btw, I have similar critiques about Lateralus & fan favorites. My biggest gripe tho is its lack of playback. "Faaip de Oiad" is a weak ender. They could have sandwiched it in as an interlude & ended with Triad/Holy Trinity. The album would sound much better on repeat that way.

Huge thank you to all of you for putting this together. Atomship was my first live show and it's awesome to get this kind of history from a band I cannot say enough good things about. And yes, Chad is the best drummer. Ever.

I periodically check back in on Chad and Derek's videos to see if by chance they've reunited to recapture the magic of Water Ship Down. Please for the love of GOD, make more music! Please.... Damnit. "Down Here" & "Silhouette" both need to be revisited and released. What can we do as fans to help make this happen?

The first album is a masterpiece. I don’t understand the amount of hate the first album gets and why it’s o frowned upon to feel that way. I’m sure at some point we’ve all felt that way, idk maybe it’s just me.

Great discussion. I'm right around Joel's age, in the 90s we used the terms old school hardcore and new school hc to differentiate between the fast punk hc like Floorpunch or War zone and the metallic sounding stuff like Earth Crisis. Good times.
