For some reason, my SL-HF2000 sometimes plays ßIII tapes at ßII speed, which means there’s briefly a sped-up playback, then the sound disappears, then the picture disappears and the counter stops advancing even while it’s playing. What do you think is the cause of this?

2:35 - I noticed that, too! 8:04 - The blue gears on Sony VHS machines seem to break frequently. 11:43 - That is actually an LCD (liquid-crystal display) with a backlight, not VFD (vacuum fluorescent display). Sony used backlit LCDs on a few of their 8 mm VCRs, too. Most VCRs don't use them because without a backlight, they are really hard to read in a dark room, and with a backlight, they are too bright and distracting in a dark room. This VCR has a door that closes to hide it, so it is not a problem here. 14:01 - I felt the same way as a kid and a teen in the '80s and '90s -- the really high-end VCRs in electronics stores had all sorts of cool features... And then I would go home to use my family's humble two-head, mono VHS VCR. 😢 14:24 - The manual is available to read for free online, and it should list all the available features. 14:43 - "APC" standards for "Adaptive Picture Control", which Sony says "automatically improves recording and playback quality by adjusting the VCR to the condition of the video heads and tape." The SLV-R1000 seems to be a slightly reduced version of the SVO-2000. It lacks separate left and right recording-level controls, a headphone port and volume control, the key-inhibit control and light (like "local" on the GCS-50), and the "auto-repeat" switch. However, it gains a "Control L" port, and only requires a two-prong plug -- the SVO-2000 requires a three-prong plug. (Also, the words "Cable Box Control" on the back are spelled correctly. On the SVO-2000, they are misspelled.)

Hey man, I know this is an older video and I'm not sure if you'll even see this, but I have a few questions. I'm having trouble finding a website to order parts from (specifically, belts) as my belts turned to goop as well. If nothing else, is it possible to use alternative belts with the same measurements? If so, where would one acquire them? Great video by the way, it's the only one that I've even been able to find on this model (mine is actually the 550, but similar enough to still be effective).

I have a box of beta and need a player lol, I need a Beta Guru and your the man! I have a pioneer laser disc player and 60 titles, but vhs is my main, 32 vcrs over the past 12 years. JVC is crap!!! I have been Sony since Ps1 Keep on huntin' great channel!

Sony never delivered S-VHS consumer decks in Europe. As far as I remember the chroma levels of S-VHS are the same as of standard VHS. So the image is sharper, but not more colorful. I think 12voltvids explained once.

Technically there were 3 tape formats. I know that people kind of forget Video 8 exists. Unfortunately, Disney didn't put many movies on Video 8.

I have a laser disc that skips. I watched this video and ordered the novus set of 3. I tried both the light and heavy scratch remover and it still skips. How long do you rub the scratch remover on the disc? Do you rub it in a circle? I did it for just a couple minutes with each one. Thanks

I just received the same model. The power light doesn't show, and the display is like yours. However, if you press eject (even with no tape inside) it acts like it's trying to eject with the head mechanism. You press rewind or fast forward and the capstans move like there is a tape inside. You press play, it spins the head like it's playing. Is this a regulator issue or something else?

Hey I recently got an SL-HF860D and an SL-HF2000 for free. Both are acting up. In fact the HF2000 threaded one of my tapes and refuses to eject and it thinks there's no cassette inserted. I know both of these decks use the 711B3 chassis, which has a mode switch, should I try cleaning that first? Also, if I can get both of them working which one should I keep and which one should I sell? I currently have a SL-HF400 as my main Betamax.

Hello, I bought a Betascan SL 5400 that had a tape stuck in the top loader. I removed the outer case and untangled it from the mechanism, but am unable to eject the tape. Nothing happens when the eject button is pressed. The tape fast forwards and rewinds so I don't think it's a motor issue. Any suggestions on how to proceed?
