This Human Bone Music Would Send You To JAIL In the USSR!
VISIT THE BONE MUSEUM www.jonsbones.com/book-a-tour
In this video, we explore the illegal, underground trade of music that was etched into bone... or bone x-rays. Soviet bone vinyls were a creative way for the people of the time to get their hands on Western music. But why? Join us as we dive into the history of these peculiar records, talk about their production and subsequent consequences.

    Would any of these differences make a difference in the health of the person, or is it the way someone sits or the kind of work they do over time, or would these same abnormalities be seen in a child?

    From 1981 to 1989 I smuggle hundreds of tape recordings wrapped around my waist from West Berlin into East Berlin for friends there. We had it all figured out so that the East German border guards didn't notice anything. An East German girl would wait for me on the east side who would jump for joy at my arrival and we'd hug each other romantically. It was all just pretend to make the guards think I had a girlfriend in East Berlin who I visited regularly. I reckon a lot of those recordings will have ended up as copies on x-ray film. To the person further down who claims western music wasn't forbidden in the USSR. Oh yes it was. It was forbidden to take such music into the country, to copy it, to sell it and to own it. Recordings - and also any western literature - in anyone's possession would be confiscated but otherwise not punished. But distributing such contraband would be severely sanctioned.

    You can't say "vinyls" when talking about plural vinyl records, the dictionary says. The only gramatically correct use of "vinyls" is when talking in plural about the vinyl polymeres. Also, you failed to mention Black Sabbath played several dates in November 1989, somtimes two concerts a day in the afternoon and evening.

    The plural of vinyl is "vinyl". Good exploration of USSR's illicit music trade though!

    Imagine if it wasnt illegal many of the people would have gone on to produce actual records and open studios and we would all get to listen to a mature music scene from all the former soviet nations. Censorship is so detrimental to creativity.

    Maybe I miss something: how is about the pirate copies in the USA nowadays? No one would be sent to jail for that? Also it has nothing to do with the vinyl records.

    I'm afraid the copywriter has no clue of the subject ... *Listening* was never a punishable offense. Neither was owning a record or importing it (although the latter was possible only to a thin minority of the population). Even it the music was loaded with capitalist blasphemy like "Brezhnev took Afghanistan Begin took Beirut". This is why yours truly had the Floyd, Uriah Heep and Omega songs impressed deep into subcortical - my father listened to them back-to back as I was learning walking. What *was* punishable was profiteering from those records and tapes. An underground tape duplication setup would certainly have problems... unless it was formally a state-run operation. A crude record-cutting lathe producing unpalatable low-grade bone sheets was a much safer proposition. But the tape was so technically superior it won the contest hands-down.

    It says "can only play a few seconds to avoid copyright" with a 1929 Disney cartoon in the background, which happens to be skeletons dancing. She put a hidden message in the bones and it fits so perfectly that it's making my head spin 💀

    The names of these records Masha mentioned ("Music on the Ribs" or "Music on the Bones") were actually a "play on words" - in the Soviet reality, it also means "heavily beating someone"

    Fascinating. It makes me appreciate how turn-key it really is to have all music ever made streaming from our pocket.

    • @jmi5969
      @jmi5969 2 дні тому

      Turnkey, yes. All music, no. The streaming catalogues are still just the tip of the iceberg. Very few artists outside of mainstream Americana, and then many records were never digitized professionally and will never be (master tapes lost forever, copyright in legal limbo etc.).

    Speaking of forensic anthropology, and given the hypothetical that an anthropologist recovers the remains of a person that, while alive, identified as trans (either sex), would that person be identified years later as their assigned sex or how they identified? Nori, How would they assign your sex in the event you are transgender?
