1981 Northview Cougars (Dothan, AL) Season Tribute.
Just in its fourth year as a school, the Northview football program sought to establish itself in the Wiregrass amongst very tough rival schools. Coach Harry Wayne Parrish and his young coaching staff knew they had a lot of talent on the team, but weren’t sure how well they would respond to the challenges ahead.
Coming off a 7-3 season in 1980, the pre-season 8th ranked Cougars were looking to break into the playoffs in 1981. Senior leadership was led by Brent Gilbert, Larry Roberts, Tim Whaley, Kerchal Byrd, Scot Patterson, Bud Young, Brad Kennington, Phillip Braswell, David Alford and others.
The season started strong with wins over Carroll and Prattville. However, a close loss to Sidney Lanier followed by a costly win over Crisp County, GA turned the season on its head. During the Crisp County game senior star quarterback David Alford was lost for the season with a knee injury. In stepped untested Junior QB Dickey Lillard who led the Cougars to victory that evening.
What transpired next was truly historic for the Northview program. The Cougars finished the regular season with wins over rivals Enterprise and Dothan, which were followed by playoff wins over Murphy, Foley, and Jeff Davis. Who among you remember that thrilling Jeff Davis game?
To finish this most memorable season, the Cougars then defeated Carver-Birmingham, 7-6, at Birmingham’s historic Legion Field to capture the 1981 4A State crown.
During the state championship game, after a scoreless half, the Cougars scored early in the third quarter on an 8-yard pass from Lillard to Larry Roberts, who would later star as a defensive end with the San Francisco 49ers. Alan Lopez converted the extra point to make it 7-0. Carver scored in the third quarter’s final minute, returning a block punt 23 yards for a touchdown. However, the point after kick was missed, and this turned out to be the difference in the game. This was the first high school football state title for the City of Dothan.
The 1981 Cougars team is largely considered the most dominant team in the 41-year history of the Northview program. The team was led by its defense behind coordinator Randy Hicks and coaches Bubba Johnson and Floyd Griffin. The Cougars allowed only 9.9 points per game. The offense averaged 20.6 a game.
Several Seniors from the 1981 team furthered their football careers in college and Larry Roberts with the 49ers. 18 members from this team played collegiate football.
Prompted by Principal James Smith’s pep rally chant, “Don’t Meet Me There - Beat Me There!”, Friday nights at Rip Hewes Stadium were always special. This team will always be remembered as the one that set the highest standard for all future Cougar teams.

1985 Northview Cougars (Dothan, AL) Season Tribute.

As dominating as the 1981 team was during their season, the 1985 Cougars took a different path to their state title. This team dubbed The Cardiac Cougars by the media, played in a record five overtime games during their historic season. The season began ominously as star do-it-all player, Lawrence Dawsey, was injured in the first quarter of the first game against Lee-Montgomery. This game was p...

So glad I found this. Healey is one of the best people I’ve come to know. Met him in dental school. We were both second career guys. Quickly realized the oldest guy in the class was the best athlete. We still play a ton of golf together and take a buddies trip with him every May. Super humble. I have to do the bragging for him when we are together with other folks. 😉 A great friend, great person with a wonderful family.

If i recall correctly Northview had Opelika's number during the 1990s. If im not mistaken Opelika played them 8 times that decade. Correction 9 times with one of the meetings coming in the 2nd round of the 6A playoffs. The record was 7-2 Northview on top. Seem like we always played them 3rd game of the season as far as the schedule. I don't know why we struggled so bad with Northview but we did

My brother and I grew up in Dothan, and enjoyed playing basketball 🏀 at westgate. I left Dothan in 98’ and my brother left in 2001’ but we have great memories going to rip hews stadium to watch my cousins play: Tony Donaldson and Edgar Walker play for Dothan high. I still my aunt (which she was in at at Northview then) taking me to a game where I first saw Lawrence Dawsey play. Didn’t know you were the QB. Oh by the way I thought David was a good QB. He had a good arm. I still remember that game in 93’ when all David did was handed the ball off to Kareece Davis and Kendrick Jernigan and they just ran it down Dothan high throat. I remember leaving that game early 😂

I was fascinated when I found out a guy who put together recruiting rankings was going to put a real team together, to see whether it translates into real life. Of course 5 stars aren't going to go to Vanderbilt any time soon, but if he's right about what he used to say on his show about how he identified under the radar players (such as guys who played other sports) they should be able to get some good teams. For most of Vanderbilt's football history, they've been a real life example of what it would be like if a group of 5 or FCS team played a power conference schedule.

Just wanted to drop you a line to tell you how much I enjoy there interviews. My father was a Vanderbilt alumnus from Chattanooga and a member of the National Commodore Club during the 90s. We went to many games together and I grew up showing my gold. I’ll never forget Homecoming’91 and that missed UGA field goal. They had two chances due to a penalty. Our seat were in that south end zone. The weather was perfect. It was the same day UT came back to beat Notre Dame. I remember the fans collectively cheering as the PA announcer gave the score (at the time ND was way ahead). Also the Ole Miss game in I think’92 or ‘93. A decisive win at night for VU. We stayed at the team hotel, the Holiday Inn off old hickory in Brentwood. We got to high five the players and coach D. Such a thrill, even at 46 now when I think about it. I’d love to hear a complete panel discussion on Hell Buckle. Digs talking about it made me laugh out loud.
