Ive found your examples of these guitars to be "topsy-turvey" in certain (some) respects. I've always found the 18's to be more mellow and have a muddier lowz/mid-lows (not in the "bad" sense, just a bit more washed out), and the 28s to be brighter with more definition and clarity. Your guitars seem to be opposite. It just reinforces what ive been saying for many years now....that acoustic guitars are individuals, each and every one. No two are "identical". Because of the nature of wood and every cut having it own individual differences in terms of the specific properties of it, as well as manufacturing variances...and a myriad of other variables that can affect the final outcome such as temperature/humidity durring different phases of construction (or even a production worker feeling rushed or just having a bad day lol), it means you can have two guitars of the exact same year and model side by side, and they can sound dramatically different from each other. You can have a $300 guitar guitar that got "lucky" sound better than a $3,000 guitar that came off the line sounding sub-par. Thats why i judge every guitar based on how it sounds and plays and try to leave the name on the headstock or price tag out of the equation and have it lead to a "placebo effect". Of course I do have my personal favorites, just like every other player (Martin and Yamaha being 2 of them, followed a couple others brands). The string brand, guage, and age can make a huge differencene too. Saddle height....lots of things. Its why if i fing a guitar i want t o buy and they try to bring me a brand new-in a box one from the storeage room out for me. I say no...i want the one i was playing lol. I dont care if its been a floor model for the last 6 months lol There but also both had some typical d-18 & 28 charachteristis. Like the rich rosewood undertones on the 28 . Did those both have the same brand new set of strings on them?

Great video! I think you covered the basics well for someone just getting started. Speaking of which, Ive been playing for about a year and after several guitars I've landed on a D18, Paige capo, Elixer pb 12-56 and mostly Primetone 1.3's and sometimes a TS pick. If I could humbly make a video suggestion it would be on rhythm and strum patterns. I figured learning rhythm would get to the jams the fastest, but it turns out that most of UA-cam focuses on licks, solos, and all the flashy stuff. Other than the basic boom-chuck I haven't been able to find a video that explains what I'm hearing from a lot of good bg rhythm players. Keep up the good work and great pickin'!

Fantastic stuff! Straight to the point, excellent playing, very knowledgable discussion of how picks can affect tone and great production quality in terms of both video and audio. How do you feel about playing comfort and pick size? I find thicker picks (closer to the 60) much more comfortable for flatpicking, but that might just be that I've gotten used to them. Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m with you, I think thicker picks are a little more comfortable. Maybe it’s because you don’t have to play as hard to get a proper volume? I’m not sure, but either way I typically stay within the 1.25 mm to 1.5 mm pick thickness.

@@MatthewGentryGuitar Yeah I'm the same! My favourites of late have been 1.4mm ones in the Dunlop Prime Tone range, which are a bit kinder on the wallet than blue chips XD. I think a big part of using a thicker pick for me is the string sliding off the pick more than the pick bending out the way, but I imagine with some practise it'd be easy enough to get used to a thinner one. Have a good one!
