After watching my own video I did notice I mis-spoke a little bit... for example I said a mosfet can't be controlled with one wire, well yes it can, you just need to bias it a little... and probably a few other little blubs in there. I'm sure some geniuses will correct me, but I hope I get the point across how a mostfet functions a little different than what I call a regular transistor.

You fluke lovers probably tell the guy with the $15 HF wrench set he uses once a year he should go buy the $320 SnapOn set, Right? Also, when I first posted this video "cesarcarvalho116" pointed out that... "the small PCB is cropped from that space. This allows making two boards at the cost of one, a substantial decrease of the board area, and a more efficient use of the raw material." I then acknowledged his statement and ate my words. :) Don't forget, many Fluke products are now made in CHINA also LOL

  • @foogod4237
    @foogod4237 15 днів тому

    Yeah, yeah, everything's gotta be some sort of malevolent conspiracy, doesn't it? Was the "planned obsolescence" done by the lizard people in charge of the government too? This isn't planned obsolescence, it's just somebody making things as cheaply as possible. Making the board in an odd shape makes for much more wasted space when producing the PCBs, leading to fewer boards that can be made per run, which makes the boards more expensive to make. Separating it into two (roughly rectangular) pieces makes it possible to arrange them much more efficiently when manufacturing them, shaving a couple of cents off of the production costs of each unit. In my experience, pretty much nothing anybody claims to be "planned obsolescence" actually is. It's usually just that they don't understand how the manufacturing process works so they make up wild assumptions to fit their own paranoid worldviews instead...

    • @bigcbradio
      @bigcbradio 15 днів тому

      Yes I am paranoid and full of conspiracy theories, like why do my wiper blades only last a month, but the similar wiper on the door windows last for 10 years or more? By the way, when I first posted this video someone pointed out in the comments that if you look at the main board, that the smaller board was cut out of it, and that is why they have 2 boards. I immediately mentioned that I made a mistake and am eating my words, but my paranoia leads me to think that you kinda look like a lizard and may be a democrat.

    • @JakeShirley

      Making something as cheaply as possible and falling bellow the floor of reliability may not be "planned obsolescence" but it's manufacturing a disposable product. Basically the same, where one is nefarious and one is just negligent. Hard to complain here if they hand these out for free though.

    That's not planned obsolecence, that's bad construction and trying to save on production expenses. That little part of the PCB would make the PCB itself way bigger so it is printed as a two part piece and then assembled. See the missing part on the other end of the PCB? That's where this piece came from.

    • @toobigtofit3584

They had a huge fishbowl full of them at the checkout counter, and if I recall correctly, you got one free if you spent over a certain amount of money. • @bigcbradio

      So you are saying it was cheaper for them to make 2 different boards and then solder them together? You are going to make me make another video... • @handles_are_dumb_01
      @handles_are_dumb_01 16 днів тому

      @@bigcbradio It might actually be cheaper, if they can get more yield out of a single sheet sheet of PCBs or something like that. Or they could have just changed the design to be able to be used in other products - say if another companies wants the Chinese factory to build a meter but have the sockets in another location in the shell. In that case they could just use some wires to put that little board somewhere else instead of major PCB redesign. It's also possible that it's made an entirely different factory to explain the design changes. Remember that "Harbor Freight" doesn't build anything - it's all pretty much so-called "white box" Chinese junk with a label slapped on it. I'm not disagreeing that it's poor design, though. I dunno, I just have trouble using the term "planned obsolescence" on something that for the price you paid you wouldn't expect to be a high quality item.

    I didn't get it. Where does the light bulb go in the circuit? In series with the primary or in parallel with the primary?

    • @bigcbradio
      @bigcbradio 21 день тому

      Series with the primary. Imagine it like this: Put 2 power switches side by side going to the primary, if you turn on either switch the transformer turns on. If you turn on both switches the transformer is on. It wouldn't matter which switch you turn on, the transformer turns on as soon as the first switch is in the on position. If you turn on the second switch nothing new happens, the first switch already turned it on. So now take one of those switches and have it run thru the light bulb on its way to the primary instead of strait to the primary. If you turn on the switch with the light bulb first, the light bulb will absorb the possible surge of current that would normally thump the transformer, and it will also put the magnetic field in the transformer in sync with the power that is coming in thru the light bulb. That switch and its power going thru the light bulb is the "soft start". Now you leave the light bulb switch on and also turn on the other power switch. Now the transformer is able to draw its full current as it is fully powered on, and at the same time the power that was going thru the light bulb has been bypassed. You can do it with 2 switches and a light bulb, or a resistor, or timers, etc. It is really simple, you just power up thru a suitable resistance, then bypass that resistance with another switch.

      @@bigcbradio Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I understand the light bulb in series with the primary. That has been around for a long time. I just couldn't tell in your video where you were putting it. I thought maybe you were trying to explain something I haven't seen and I didn't want to miss it, if you were.

      50 years I haven't flattened a tube yet.... (knocks on wood)... but... I did sell that amp recently and the guy kept saying he was going to drive it with 100 watt HAM Radio. I told him at least 10 times, don't do that, he kept saying he could turn the power down, and I kept saying don't do it! Later that day he called me to listen to him on air from 75 miles away and over a 10,600ft mountain. I told him it sounded bad like he was over driving it. The next morning he called me complaining that it stopped working and he thought I should repair it because as soon as he got home and hooked it up locals told him it sounded bad.

    I should mention what I didn't say in the video is.... the results would be the same if I had the antenna on the meter horizontal and the radio horizontal. In the real world out there, there are reasons to use vertical or horizontal, but that is whole other can of worms for another day. This video was just to show that it does make a pretty large difference if the transmitting and receiving antennas are not polarized the same.

    Luckily, my 20 amp isolation transformer has dual primaries, so I run it from 240 VAC, instead of 120, and that keeps the breaker from popping. It's enough current to make the wires rattle inside the conduit. Transformers, even with no load, appear as a series R-L circuit, and there is a startup transient. You can even model it in SPICE and see for yourself that several cycles are required to reach steady-state.

    My suggestion, use a time-delay relay. Connect the value of the resistor needed to stop the surge in series with transformer primary. Connect NO contacts of timer across resistor. When timer activates, say 1 second, contacts close and take resistor out of the circuit.

    • @bigcbradio
      @bigcbradio Місяць тому

      Yes, that is the correct way to do it. I'm cheap though, I just use a switch and I'm the timer and by the time I switch it, it's ready. LOL

    If you get 2 identical MOT's and series the primary's, each will only see half of the mains voltage, and run much more efficiently and cooler. The issue is, as you described, they have too many volts per turn on the primary. Then you can wind whatever you want on the two secondary's, but you need to balance the loads, so say you want 12v, wind the secondary the same on both and series them to get 12v.

    • @bigcbradio
      @bigcbradio Місяць тому

      I actually have many mot's and I do have 2 matching. I was planning on doing just that with them, but I haven't got around to it yet. I was going to run the secondaries in parallel. You have good advice, hopefully others read this also.

      @@bigcbradioseries is better as it spreads the current evenly. Just aim for half the voltage required on each one.

      @@dieseldes6578 I will try it both ways, it is just for 6.5 volts so it will be easy to try it both ways. Maybe I will put them next to each other and try looping the secondary thru both ! 😀

    At a TV station I maintained, our soft start circuit used 2 1 ohm wire wound resistors on a Harris TV-55U 50 kw transmitter to slowly bring up the high voltage. The filaments were also soft started.

      @@KA9DSL Dangerous is an understatement at those voltages. I have been zapped many times, everything from your ordinary car ignition coil to 240ac house, but the worst ever was from a capacitor in an old ceiling fan that had been removed from the ceiling for a month! As crazy as that sounds, I was taking the fan apart for who knows what now, but as I took it apart the capacitor got me from hand to hand thru both arms and across the chest. Seems silly since the cap was about the size of a D battery and it was just a 110v fan, but my muscles were sore for a week. It was one heck of a firm contraction. I was holding the fan up with my left hand and had the wire cutters in my right, and when I cut into a wire..... Snap! Since that day I don't mess around with anything without thinking first.
