Tree Removal: Taking Down Our Old Black Walnut Tree
Hey everyone! In 2020 we made the difficult decision to remove the gigantic black walnut tree that sits right next to our old log home. We thought it was probably hollow at its base, making it a risk for falling on our house or cars. Were we right??
If you're in the Charlottesville area, we can't recommend Charlottesville Tree Service enough. They really did a great job.
Michael Colella turned us some really beautiful wood bowls as a thank you for donating wood. You can find his stall at the Maryland Renaissance Festival or visit his website: sleepingbeauti.com/contact-us

    Thanks for the video. Great team work. Do you know how old your log cabin is and what did you use for a finish oil treatment? Sorry if you mentioned this in your video as I did fast forward thru some of it. Thanks.

    Have ever tried.,or heard of using cardboard runner strips taped down to help prevent that from getting into the cement between. The logs of your wooden log cabin. It will create A barrier against that from happening. A quicker way to put that on is using A air compressor with A paint sprayer gun with extra fill containers for the spray gun. That way you can clean one out to be reused at anytime on hand. It'll take 20 to 30 gallons of that oil. Sometimes it takes up to 40 to 50 gallons of that oil to treat wooden log on the outside with. After that baked in good. I'd invest in some Thomson waterproof sealer to spray over that to for double protection purposes also.,or you could get clear cement to mix with lacquer thinner.,or paint thinner to spray on those logs with.

    Great video! I bought a log home 2 years ago, and have learned a lot of hard lessons much like you folks have. The logs and structure need to be sealed, so if you're thinking of buying a log home make sure you know what it's going to take to do this if it's not already, and it's not a once and done operation. Mine hadn't been stained in over 15 years (down to the wood fibers exposed), and was poorly sealed. I'm in a wooded rural area in East TN, and the carpenter bees were a nightmare. I just had it stained, sealed, and had all the bee damage repaired. I absolutely love it now, and it's like a new home. I'm going to need to re-stain the weather exposed sides in probably another 5 years. Owning a log home is definitely not maintenance free. You need to be prepared to put money and effort in to maintain it, but is extremely rewarding if you do so.

You mentioned your project coming in around 200k, would you share the break down of how that was spent project by project? I’d love to have an idea of what to expect. Maybe see some of the things that you had to address, that maybe I’m overlooking. A outline of sorts would be great for those of us considering something like this. The cabin has turned out really beautiful!! You guys have done a wonderful job saving a set of old sticks, DIY’ing a adorable little human, serving Mango and peaceful expression. 😊 Be well~

    I am feeling this times 100. I bought a cabin 4 years ago with a very handy partner.. and then we split. So I’ve been learning as I go. The smallest things have so much more consideration around them- like the exterior maintenance… my cabin came with hideous stain and I want to redo it. Either a contractor mugs your retirement fund or it’s time consuming and exhausting. Anyway, good luck! It’s somehow feels all worth it regardless. I hope.

    It’s nice the little cabin, I wonder why it never had siding, usually they would put siding, very strong wood siding and painted white, this type construction definitely ended mid to late 1800, a lot of these gem are pretty hidden, the wood siding, really made them look different, basically the beginning of the standard siding, that now is sold as vinyl siding, so your cabin most be pretty old late 1700s or super early 1800, build at cost price, I bought a house recently, the who own it for 90 years, didn’t really know the age of the place, its wrap in vinyl siding all around, has a super garage attached, multiple sub divisions, that add to pretty big plot, but I was up in the garage roof inside, and saw the corner of the house it look ancient, and the logs that basically hold the upstairs flooring system, look exactly like yours, none of them are same pattern, so my house is basically a log cabin, which explains, why the person who own this, took the time to wrap vinyl, even tho it was already originally wrap I’m wood siding, this log cabin are definitely a special event, that capture people, into rebuilding them, and I’m not surprised at survive a super storm, when I’m in this place, you can’t feel nothing outside, the other day there was 3 or 4 fire truck, in front I didn’t even notice, until i look why my camera notifications were going crazy, definitely good luck with your cabin house, hopefully the next people appreciate it as much, because these place definitely out life a few generations, which is definitely something to take into consideration when rebuilding, you set the building for success regardless of who get it or your actual stay

I love studios as it serves my purpose and I have found it helps me able to do so much more and I have come to realize we don’t need all this stuff that we think we can’t do without. Now this is not for everyone of course or especially with a big family. But it’s a great option for someone who wants to love with intention or as what these guys are doing working on a project.

    The Ideal Cooking Time For safety reasons the water temperature should be between 165 degrees and 210 degrees Fahrenheit. The worst thing you could do when making bone broth is to allow the water to reach temperatures above 212 degrees. When the insta pot is set to high pressure, it heats up to well over 210. You can contact the manufacturer or simply Google it to fact check this information. Hope this helps🙂

    The bottom 1/3 of the log cabin I'm looking to buy is made of concrete and big rocks like 8-20in brown rocks and white mortar or concrete maybe. I've seen abandoned houses with similar lower sections. Do u think they're solid? How long do they last. The fire place is similar but smaller brown rocks. Probably 3-6 in.

    Post and beam framing is better than authentic log homes. Then apply log siding that is back primed with sold coat primer sealer. Then the interior walls to the outside can be built and insulated normally. Much more efficiency for heating and cooling. But from outside it would look like a log home.

    • @bellwetherfields6476
      @bellwetherfields6476 Рік тому

      Sounds like a good idea, although with other materials such as stone I think I can always tell it’s not the real deal. If it could be indistinguishable from the real thing it would be a fantastic way to keep the elements One thing we appreciate about our home is the thermal mass of the logs combined with the modern materials used to chink and daub in between. Especially in the summer, it tends to stay nice and cool.

    😁 i laughed myself to death… it took you years to get a good chicken bonebroth?! It is so easy: just put parsnip roots , carrots, onions, a bit of garlic, parsleyroot , a bit of ginger and pepper , then your chicken pieces in the pot and simmer for minimum of 12 hours… it is a traditional recipe in Europe and it is delicious! You can eat it hot as a soup or cold as gelly… the parsnip is really key. And cellery does NOT taste good with chicken, but is perfect for beef. Moreover, vinegar goes with beef, NOT with chicken. Moreover, To cook liver for hours is a crime. You destroy a lot of the vitamins, and it does not cave collagen to need coning die hours like bones do. My advice: fry it in a pan and enjoy…
