@@D20Dilemma Your videos are great i just found your channel and I am watching the CR 1 tournament now
How many CR 3 knights can kill a level 20 party of players? How many CR 0 rats can kill a level 5 single character (Fighter/ sorcerer vs THE RAT KING)? How many imps can kill a CR 21 Solar?
ABSOULUTE CINEMA :D
Ive had the same question, but with level 1 players. How many level 1 players does it take to beat an ancient gold dragon? Player class is equally spread out, so go in alphabetical order. (I.e. barb, cleric, druid, fighter, etc)
So now more important question: How many goblin you need to kill a Tiamat?
Y'all got me curious so I tried running this scenario in BattleSim, just with a few changes: 1) Ancient Red Dragon instead of Adult 2) The dragon uses lair actions 3) The goblins are affected by frightful presence before they enter the lair (it's "any creature within 120 feet who is aware of its presence", so I think it's fair to assume it doesn't require line of sight) I had to go edit the code to lift the limits that are normally there to make sure the simulation doesn't freeze your computer for having too many actors in it. If the gobbos all appeared on round 1, the dragon was able to fight 350 of them and win If the gobbos appeared in groups of 50, it could fight about 500 of them before dying If the gobbos appeared in group of 15... Yeah I mean I gave up after 500 goblins had barely dealt 50 points of damage in total out of the dragon's 550 HP, the simulation just took too long and I lost patience xD
Yep! When we get through some other scenarios we'll put the ancient one to the test as well
@@D20Dilemma I also tried with a Red Greatwyrm, which has double the HP and like triple the area of effect, as well as an optional trait which, and I quote, "does not affect its challenge rating", that allows it to heal whenever it takes fire damage (it can deal around 50 fire damage to itself per round, even without counting the fire breath) With groups of 300 new goblins every round, it took a total of about 3000 goblins to finally slay the beast :p (...I had to switch to swarm-type stat blocks for this xD)
@@Trekiros Damn :D the "does not effect challenge rating" got me there. We're definitely going to be giving variety to the units on the next one if we decide to go for any creature above CR 17 for a speedier combat
I thought this was going to be just a guy calculating average numbers of the stat blocks, But instead this was actually entertaining!
Really cool idea. What VTT do you use for these fights?
Roll20
What VTT do you use for these fights?

The problem for me is that you portray the Goblins as stoic creatures that charge fearlessly at the dragon. I honestly think that if you see 15 Goblins entering in front of you and you enter (in theory 6 seconds later) and the next thing you see is a dozen of your companions on fire, screaming or completely charred, I think that at the very least a buffer would be created between the Goblins that enter and those that try to flee in terror. Then the dragons are very intelligent creatures with spectacular senses, I don't see them being ambushed by a hundred Goblins and left to die without further ado. At least if the players are facing very weak creatures, after a couple of turns they make a few heads explode and I make the rest flee. I also don't think that after seeing 7 of their companions blown to pieces by a fire-breathing Paladin and seeing how a crazy guitarist turns another half dozen into pulp in a few seconds they will come back for more, no matter how numerous they are XD
If we were taking the goblins emotions into account, completely agree. Imagine in this scenario the goblin soldiers building up in the tunnel were threatened by a group of goblin commissar's shouting "Not One Step Back!"
Which program is this?
Roll20
@D20Dilemma thanks
lets see, coatl ofc, deathlock, any dragon wyrmling, elephant, black pudding, flameskull, ghost 9all from dnd beyond so if my picks suck than ye)
Ngl this was fun and proof why goblin was as scary as goblinslayer goblin in combat
This is mathematical Clownery.
You missed the adult red dragons lair actions Magma erupts from a point on the ground the dragon can see within 120 feet of it, creating a 20-foot-high, 5-foot-radius geyser. Each creature in the geyser’s area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A tremor shakes the lair in a 60-foot radius around the dragon. Each creature other than the dragon on the ground in that area must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone. Volcanic gases form a cloud in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. The sphere spreads around corners, and its area is lightly obscured. It lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round. Each creature that starts its turn in the cloud must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of its turn. While poisoned in this way, a creature is incapacitated.
This. With lair actions and smart play, the Dragon could go through thousands of goblins.
technically the dragon should be using its legendary action after the first goblin attacks it each turn. this would of drastically upped its kill count as it could kill goblins even before they attack
I'd be interested to see how kobolds would compare, with an equivalent CR disparity. (No real kobold would ever attack a dragon!) I feel like it would take much less kobolds, simply because Pack Tactics is so powerful. Or they could just send 1 winged kobold and win by default, with its unlimited range attack.
I'm not saying you're Nostradamus, but.... soon™️
Please, do Weretiger!
Honestly goblins have too crappy weapons to pierce dragon scales
No no, you should've ordered that 100 goblins to stand in a straight line with their arms spread wide and have them pass a rock from one side to the other.
Now that we have this methodology, I'd like to see this combat repeated with a) lair action and b) innate sorcery of the dragon. But that might be a bit overkill considering that they could just Wall of Fire the entrace and be done with it.
Def up to do it again in an open lair where enemies can come from all sides, definitely increasing the battalion numbers as the fight goes on :D
"People who died in life" as opposed to people who died in death???

best part of the vid the replies
Another cool video! Some real explosive wild cards in this one! Some thoughts on the strategies in the fights though, just in case you'd agree and want to implement something in a later fight with similar things going on. When the cultist can't see the wisp, they can still order the spiritual weapon to attack where they think the wisp might be (with disadvantage against AC 19, good luck with that). Since the wisp is probably instinctually driven as an undead, the cultist might be able to guess where the wisp is during its turn. Also, the concentration thing that's already been mentioned - but the cultist could just ready a dagger attack instead to keep the shield up. It also didn't really matter, but prepared actions happen as soon as they are triggered, interrupting whatever is going on - meaning the cultist and the ballista would technically have taken their respective actions *before* the wisp and ankheg attacked them, since you phrased the triggers to be someone appearing and not someone attacking. The wisp is perhaps a bit unclear, but the ankheg for sure leaves the ground before making its attack.
Pretty sure under the rules of 5e, as long as the creature is two sizes larger or smaller, they can move through each other no problem
^ 7 years of playing D&D and have never recognized this ruling was a thing, thanks for pointing it out! In the bottleneck though the goblins would've been moving at half speed, so they wouldn't be able to get past it at that angle without ending their turn in the dragon's space.
Amazing concept, I like this idea! I do have some thoughts on strategies that the fighters would likely use as their go-to battle styles, making them both more deadly and more believable. The centaur, sea hag and bandit captain still won their fights, but it might be interesting to consider if you'd agree for future fights with similar fighters. The centaur would like to use its charge, so it would probably back up to increase the distance to the nothic to 30 ft. before charging in. If it deems it worth risking an attack of opportunity, it would then attack again on its second turn before running away to set up a new chance to charge. The sea hag would surely know that a frightened creature can't move closer to her, so once the enemy is frightened she would take an attack of opportunity to back up just a little and make the enemy unable to attack her while she death glares. The bandit captain might prefer to kite the azer and throw daggers if they win the initiative (since they are equally fast), it seems fair to assume a gang leader might be smart enough to not punch an opponent on fire but at the same time it seems unfair to assume the bandit captain has a million daggers stowed away in their boots.
Glad you liked it! As for the strategies: - Completely agree on the centaur, at least for the first fight it should've taken advantage on the charge, just thought it would've purely outdamaged the nothic so I didn't consider it then - I was planning to run the sea hag back if she started losing in damage, but the fight ended too early for em. - For the bandit captain we considered the dagger option, but we did at the end deem it way too op for him to chuck a thousand daggers.
would have loved to see some lair actions, could have easily killed an extra 100 gobos
You will definitely see some lair actions for the next boss battle 🫡we didn't have enough time to finish this combat when we thought of it if we used lair actions, will def do it soon™️
They can be dangerous, if only they don't get bad rng. Like against a cr3 archer for example...
I absolutely love this, thank you UA-cam for recommending it 😭
Glad you enjoyed it!

@@Gabriel-px8cv Oh! We're playing on Roll20, it's a browser based TTRPG tool

Another random idea: how about after several of these, you let the biggest losers from every tournament fight? The two fighters who lost in the worst way in the first round: be it in the least amount of turns, or while doing very little damage to their opponent. Every tournament already determines the first place, but this way we would have an official last place of shame.
Oh yeahhh boi, not watched yet but I see my boy the owlbear in the thumbnail Edit: YEEEAAAAHHH MY BOIIIII
You are not prepared for this tournament! ITS WIIIILLLDDD
Im just waiting for the Cr30 tournament 🔥🔥🔥
Random idea: in the semi finals and final the map has already taken damage from the battles before and now is unstable terrain. Uneven ground where one could trip, parts of the ceiling falling down, maybe a small part is even on fire, etc.
I’m not a big fan of flying character, but it’s a DM issue to deal with and many can. I also prefer the classic races and none of the Disney animal characters. That said, I’ve played/have a frog monk, so who needs flying when you have 75ft+ jump distance.
I would like to see the cr 4 couatl. It can shapeshift and has intelligence of 18. So it should know what form is best for each opponent. Now if only it didn't have those, gamebreaking op immunities. Maybe nerf to resistances instead? Or just completely ban it... Anyway, the flameskull, chuul, deathlock and clockwork iron cobra are also interesting. The clockwork iron cobra especially would surely make for fun fights.
Seeing that archer made me wonder: could a fighter, that is intelligent enough, knock over one of the tables and use them for cover? If the fighter is also strong enough, could they move the table and be behind full cover the entire time? Could be quite overpovered. Also if that is water at the top of the map there, someone could try drowning an enemy. Maybe after grappling.
I think we might've recorded this convo? We ruled that any creature can crouch behind a table for half cover, so that is def a possibility. As for the outside, this was a blizzard map, so there's heaps of snow outside.
@@D20Dilemma Ahh okay. That makes sense.
What, no Killer Whale in the CR3 tournament? I guess he didn't RSVP in time, alas. They're terrible about that sort of thing.
We spent our entire tournament budget on the saloon, not enough for an aqua pool :(
Martial Adept being well trained in battle should know to disengage with a knocked down opponent, as he only gets one attack of opportunity vs 2 attacks on the next turn. Sad to see the displacer beast go like that, but it was a bad matchup for it.
With the redcap being a very agressive creature I would've had it grapple, and they have a very good athletics with a plus 6, so we didn't bother to risk it, this wasn't included in the footage but good shout for future fights
Oh hell yeah! Many of the creatures I recommended made it. I think the martial arts adept and brain in a jar have good chances. Though the ogre chain brute and slithering tracker are also dangerous.
2 Goblins in trenchcoat, shenanigans 😉
The thing about these cute little brain guys is that if you're an idiot of some sort, you be perfectly safe around them.
Oh you can make a cool story out of that. A dragon is getting increasingly annoyed by the goblins that just keep appearing in his lair. The dragon could offer a reward to a party of players. In exchange they would have to search the narrow caves inside of the dragons mountain for the source of the goblin attacks. Do the players side with the dragon, just kill all goblins they find and get paid? Do they investigate why the goblins keep showing up, despite most of them being killed by the dragon? Maybe they team up with the goblins to take down the dragon? (Something the party might not be able to do on their own) A green dragon could fit better than a red one here, if you go stricty by what the monster manual says... A Question: Is that a special map tool you used in the video? What is it?
Neet idea! As for the map tool, we use Roll20 for all of our map/rolling needs.
They can also use fear toxins on vaguely bat shaped people 🤔
Do u guys have like a community discord?
Of course! Here it is: discord.gg/HG8dejy9
Dont know why this stuff doesnt have any views ur chemistry is fun u got my sun gotta checl all ur stuff out
Very intreresting, but why be inte the lair and not have lair actions? How many more goblins would it have taken with lair actions do you think?
We were initially concerned if we added an Ancient Red Dragon the fight would've taken a sickening amount of time to complete, but then looking at the lair actions for the Adult Red Dragon we thought the same thing, so we just took the raw stat block. It is possible that it would've racked up a noticeable amount more, but the lair map was only for the shiny gold at the end :D
@@D20Dilemma i absolutly understand the time aspect, so completly fair. Just the dragon fan in me wondering.😆
Lol
