Zumbro River 7.6.24 at 12 ft
Amber and I went from Zumbro Falls to Hammond on 7-6-24 when the water was at 12 ft (normal is around 6 ft). I was holding my camera straps in my teeth for the videos, so sorry it isn't always aimed where the action is. We did the run in 1.5 hours, twice as fast as normal. What a fun ride. Courtney was able to join us later in the day and we did it again, but I didn't take videos that time. We got rained on, a little bit, so the camera was stowed in the rapids.

6-29-24 A Red-tailed hawk had killed a pheasant beside the road. Red-winged blackbirds were trying to drive it away from their area. In the video, I mistakenly say the hawk killed a rabbit. On 6.12.24 I caught this young Red-shouldered hawk on perhaps his first venture out of the nest. At the beginning of the video, you can also see a yellow warbler on the left of the hawk. I was taking pictures of this Red-tailed hawk, and when he flew from where he was perched, a Red-winged blackbird, in an attempt to drive it away from its nesting area, landed on the hawks back and rode there for must have been about 10 seconds? 5.27.24 This flicker was going at it on one of our pieces of firewood. Wood chips flying everywhere. A house wren flies back and forth a few times, and in another video dives at the flicker hoping to drive it away from his house just to the right of the field of view.

5-25-24 I was taking pictures of this hawk feeding her 3 chicks a snake on the nest when she decided she didn't like me there and dive bombed me. She must have gotten within 10 feet of me before she swooped up to this branch which was just above me. I asked her to please dive bomb me again so I could get it on video this time, but she did not oblige.

This killdeer was trying to fake me out with its broken wing ploy to lure me away from its nest. I eventually found the nest. They are very well camouflaged.

Four Trumpeter Swans in Whitewater Wildlife Refuge, MN land on a pond. Two are a mated pair and the other two are probably their offspring. The lifetime mates greet each other upon landing. So sweet. 1-27-24

I live in rural Arkansas and have only seen 3 of them on separate occasions in the 5 years of living here and i have many different great songbirds but the red-headed woodpecker is the most beautiful bird 🐦.
I have read that they are more uncommon than they used to be. I've been in MN for 25 years and I'd never seen one. In the last two or three years I had one show up in my yard briefly on two separate occasions. Then I found where these ones are hanging out. I've gone back to that area 4 times in the last 2 months and have seen them every time. They are beautiful! I hope they stick around and thrive where they are.
