Hackman was great because he had a Shakespearian stage actor called Richard Harris in front of him. Two marvelous actors playing off each other from different acting traditions and different cultural backgrounds just clicked in the most natural way in that scene you just have to believe it is real.

As much as there was to hate about Little Bill, English Bob was even more despicable, and pathetic on top of it. Gene Hackman and Richard Harris so brilliantly brought these characters to life. And Saul Rubinek did such a brilliant job playing the cowardly, slimy gunslinger groupie. 😂

Maybe Bill implied that a gun sometimes may be a symbol, and that size may underline the fertile/reproductive nature of an area; that barrel size is about something else, something even bigger
