Nice idea. You can also get mini dvr's that can upscale to higher resolutions and I'm sure I saw one that can even do interpolation. Basically you could get 4k.
cant find the monitor on aliexpress

Bro, i cannot see the menu when i used a normal AV wire to my TV.. Tried also using that easycap.. Any advice? I'm using a mini DV
Hi, unfortunately, the mini DVR doesn’t use the standard wiring configuration that most cameras do. Because of that, you’ll need to make a small modification to the cable. Here’s a link where I explain how to do it :) ua-cam.com/video/q0lSxFi5fRc/v-deo.html
sup man, i have no av output but rca on my vx2100e. do i have any chances to record on mini dvr???
Yes! In this video I explain how to make and adaptor ua-cam.com/video/q0lSxFi5fRc/v-deo.html :)
Good morning, can you tell me how to record with better sound, since these cameras do not have good sound?
Hi! The mini DVR has very poor audio recording quality, so the best option is to record the audio separately, like on a recorder, to the PC or to the phone. For that, you would have to make a cable that allows you to output the audio and video independently :)
hey Max, your videos, patience an dedication to share your knowledge are amazing thanks for all, bro greetings from Chile
Thank you so much bro! Una abrazo hasta Chile!
🗿
Thank you!
this is great, i wonder if i can modify once of my cameras to have the connector inside the tape area
nice video - and nice idea :)
Thank you for making these videos. I've been messing with analog video for a while, but it never occured to me that these old cams that use VTRs can be modded this way. I've completed 2 newvicon cams now, and I'm loving the result!

Wow! definitely the best hack I've seen this year!
Looks fantastic when bypassing tape during the shooting. But if I used this as a standalone tape-to-digital converter for something already recorded, how does it compare to that $60 Vidbox capture device?
@@BeOurBee It works exactly the same with pre-recorded VHS material. To my eyes, the mini DVR just looks better, but the Vidbox wins by far in audio quality :)
It's called simply taking the body from a Barbie camera.

Why you whispering fam?
Thank you very much for this video! This device is so compact and simple, but it performs such a useful function! It costs less than everything I used to buy to digitize videos from old cassettes: a video capture card for a computer, a vhs tape recorder, an easy-cap, and everything is so simple and convenient here. I am very glad that I came across your video, thank you!
Im making this rn and I love the video but the audio comes super crap u maybe know why comes like this ??
This is a cool project. But I can't help but think of how much of a miniaturization marvel that mini dvr is. Money simply could not have bought you such a tiny high quality recorder full stop back when this camera was new. Crazy how far tech has come in the past 20 years.
0:38 my first video I saw on ur channel was the Barbie camera you modded, and I’m trying to get into PCB design and I was really inspired how you were able to get the mini DVR in there and especially the USB-C female port in there and soldered on. If possible could we get more videos talking about your knowledge on pcb design in a camera moding video like the Barbie camera you did? That would be really cool and it would help a lot of people like me a whole lot
G'day, Troy from Australia once again, I just watched this vid and the music vid, great work once again!!! Can't thank you enough for putting the idea out in modding these old cameras to record to mini DVR! Thought I'd let you know a couple of my vintage cameras got used in a couple of music videos, one still available for viewing is here ua-cam.com/video/h6tBFVnqklE/v-deo.html camera used 1977-78 JVC GC-3300E two vidicon tube colour camera. I've also recently done a road trip to Tasmania and have done a LOT of filming on my 1980-81 Hanimex VC600P vidicon colour camera recording to mini DVR, am gonna upload the retro cam recordings of the trip on my channel hopefully within the next month.
I have this exact same brand dvr, but my mSD card doesn’t lock into the port - I can spring it inside, and it won’t fall out if turned upside down, but it doesn’t lock into place. Did I get a bad batch or is this normal? Thanks brother
I think my VHS camcorder only turns on the microphone when there is a tape inserted. Is there any method for me to capture audio from the microphone too? (Its a "Panasonic Omnimovie")
it's amazing to know people like you exist! I have a Sony Handycam that records on mini DVDs, and I've been looking into a way to bypass the DVDs cause they are hard to find, expensive, etc, and the camera has nightshot mode! modern phones don't have nightshot mode! I'll defnetly loo into this device, hope there is a way to improve sound quality
@@Androchan Thank you so much! And yeah!! Sony's nightshot feature is super cool even nowadays!
Hi! I followed your exact wiring diagram but when I try using it with my Elura 60, nothing shows up. However, when the cable is plugged partially into the mini DVR, there is video, but no audio. But when I plug it in a bit more, there is distorted audio but no video. If its plugged all the way, nothing. Would you know what Im doing wrong?
although I don't have much knowledge in electronic tinkering I find it's really fun watching these kinds of videos.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it :)

Sorry to hear that :( Let me share what I think might help. Keep in mind that the mini DVR doesn’t use the same pinout as video cameras. Here’s a link where I explain how to fix it easily. I hope this helps you out :) ua-cam.com/video/q0lSxFi5fRc/v-deo.html
Great content Max! I have a question. Do you think there is any way to DIY modify a Sony CCD M8E video8 camera (the first Handycam from 1985)? It has no 'video out' or 'line out' at all. I imagine it would involve hacking the board. Where would I even start?
Hi James! That's a great question! Since the CCD-M8E doesn't have a built-in monitor or electronic viewfinder, adding a video out is a bit trickier. The camera does process a video signal internally before recording it to tape, so in theory, it should be possible to intercept that signal from the mainboard. However, it would require identifying the right point on the circuit (possibly with a service manual or using an oscilloscope) and soldering a connection to create a composite video-out. I have to admit, this is just my theory, as I don’t have the technical knowledge to attempt it myself yet. I’d love to help you more directly, but I’ll be starting to study electronics at the beginning of next year, so I’m still at the start of my learning journey. If you decide to dive into this project, let me know I’d love to hear how it goes and maybe learn from it too!
@ thanks for the reply Max. That was what I was thinking. I’ve found the service manual online so I may open this door soon and see what I discover! Thanks again, and good luck on your studies.

@@dirtystax284 Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!
Great video, Hahahaha i was also thinking of using this on a panasonic gs500, its pretty much one of the last mini dv camcorders which was released around 2006, i also use a firewire recorder which is the priciest alternative, if some one is looking for 1-1 quality then firewire is the best way to go, something like the sony mrc1 or a focus firestore fs models are the alternatives. though the mrc1 is like 400 dollars the focus firestore is like 100, whit a cheap mod you could make the focus record on cf cards like the mrc1 for easy access otherwise the firestore needs a firewire adapter
recording to a dvr without actually recording to tape is INSANE!
very useful,thx
@@Bernieretrowave thank you!
could you provide a equipment list?
Love this. I too have had issues trying to find that connector. Some years ago I was lucky enough to find somewhere in the UK that had the AV cables in a stock list. I asked how many they had and they said 3 so I bought them all. The packages we covered in dust, clearly they'd been around for a while! But their rarity and usefulness means I was still reluctant to cut one and use it in a prodject - but I did. With hindsight using the cable from the RF modulator makes a lot more sense as a) it's of no practical use and b) they are relatively easy to find. Anyway, I build my project for the JVC GR-C1 in an old battery case. I replaced the battery cells and added some mods so I could use it as an interface with the ImmersionRC Powerplay DVR. You can see it in actions here, where I can trigger the DVR using the record button on the JVC: photos.app.goo.gl/xkTZjvX1FHHMK22E7
I want to see more camera modify videos😋
Thank you for your feedback! Will do! :)
I got a mini dvr and it works but the files aren’t able to be opened. I tried every software including VLC😥 please help
Sorry to hear that :( Let me share what I think might help. Keep in mind that the mini DVR doesn’t use the same pinout as video cameras. Here’s a link where I explain how to fix it easily. If you’ve already tried that, it could be an issue with the SD card. I suggest using one that’s 64GB or smaller and formatting it to FAT32. While FAT32 isn’t always required, it can sometimes solve specific issues. I hope this helps you out :) ua-cam.com/video/q0lSxFi5fRc/v-deo.html
@ I tried it and it finally worked! I was about to try other methods like buy an old laptop for FireWire. Thank you so much
what kind of currency is "Dlls"? i speak american
@Omabatfartsbruh haha sorry spanish is my first language and we Dlls 😆
If it is not recorded on tape, it is not VHS :) Have you stretched the video intentionally?
Thank you for your comment; I truly appreciate you sharing your opinion. Personally, for me, just using this camera is a special experience on its own. In the past, I’ve recorded many times on tape and transferred the video afterward, but honestly, the result looks 99% the same to my eyes, so I feel the extra effort isn’t really worth it. Also, this particular camera doesn’t have a working tape recording mechanism, so I didn’t have another option :p. Regarding the image format, the mini DVR, when set to the highest quality, records in this format by default. If you lower the quality, it will record in 4:3, but I chose to prioritize a higher bitrate. For this 'making of,' I decided not to change the aspect ratio to maintain visual consistency, but if you check the final video, everything is in 4:3 :). I hope this clarifies my approach, and thanks again for sharing your perspective!
@@MaxVegaKun I tried recording directly onto a digital recorder - not the same recorder as yours - from my VHS camcorder bypassing tape altogether, and it looked much cleaner, and color resolution was much better. Looked almost like DV. I just wanted to say that VHS is about recording on tape. If you are bypassing tape, there is no VHS, so your title is a bit misleading :) Have you uploaded the completed music video? I could not find it on your channel. Thanks!
I understand your point, and I appreciate you sharing it. For me, the result achieves exactly what I was aiming for, so I’m happy with how it turned out. Since the music video isn’t mine, it’s not on my channel, but I’ve included a link in the description that will take you directly to it. Thank you for your interest!
Are the Mini DVR you see for sale created equal?
@@Goomer Yes, I’ve seen the same model with different branding. I believe it’s a generic mini DVR that each seller brands differently. But generally, if it has the same shape, it should be the same device :)
