Thanks for the tour. It's good to see your plants doing well.
What’s your lighting for the temperate pings?
@@BrianQuerry exactly the same :)
How do you feed all of them? 😊
@@beverlysullivan1427 I give them freeze dried blood worms about 1x a month
Plants and bog is looking great! I especially love all the Sarrs. Just wanted to comment on that weedy moss thing in the bog with lady bug purp, I think that might be pearlwort? I had a bunch in one of my pots from Brad and after looking it up its a pretty nasty invasive species. Can't quite tell if thats what yours is by the video but might be worth looking into. I ended up pulling it all out but Im seeing it pop up everywhere now lol.
@@andrewdalke9134 good to know! It came from a few plants I got a random order off the Canadian forums. I'll keep an eye on it. Any time I have tried to remove it it has sprouted from the roots :/
Let’s see your cactus and succulents also!
@@brianmayberry1 will do! (:
So would you now recommend against filling the entire pot with the 100% lithic mix, or is it just a cost-saving measure in your case?
Am I good to use the qualisorb, filter sand, and fluval stratum right out of the bag, or do I need to make sure I rinse these all out before mixing and putting my ping in it?
good idea to rinse it, but I personally dont :3
@@AndrewsStickyLeaves Also, thank you so much for shouting out that you can get all these materials at Canadian tire lol, made the acquisition process painless!
@@quotient9974 no problem (:
what do you recommend as the absolutely easiest one to take care of? i'm thinking about getting my first carnivorous plant.
@@Ghost-sz7uo they are all basically the same so whichever one you like the best :) Select species are finicky like emarginata which likes a higher humidity and the bulb forming pings (heterophylla, medusinae, etc. and sorta gypsicola) like to be very dry during succulent phase
I just learned about this plant and im obsessed they are so cute, wanted to add some into my tent that i grow cannabis in as a companion crop to keep gnats down. Your set up is super nice and giving me some inspiration for other rack set ups in my place. Thank you for putting out valuable knowledge on these little guys.
Awesome plants!
You sound a bit like Michael Buble 😅
How do you get rid of the heat?
@@AffinityPhoto what do you mean? :)
@@AndrewsStickyLeaves your lights and power supplies put out a ton of heat. Do you have ac in that room?
@@AffinityPhoto I have a small portable AC unit. But tbh the TV in my living room puts out more heat. These LEDs are quite efficient :) The grow domes help to keep up the humidity when it gets hot, but as long as your pings dont have prolonged temperatures above 25C without a nighttime drop I wouldn't worry.
Yay! Thanks for the upload
@@MichelleMonstera :)
Beautiful plants! What kind of bookcase/shelf is that? Looks like it works great
@@gagepaquet3398 www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/fjaelkinge-shelving-unit-white-60221683/ it's metal so works great with magnets and growlights (:
Cannot wait to try this mix for my pings!
It seams you have changed your ping mix. Can you post the updated ingredients and amounts please? Thanks
I talk about my updated ratios in this video. Briefly I replaced qualisorb with cherrystone granite grit 1/16" and topdress with the grit as well
So your plants are all in succulent or carnivore stage in the same climate? Do you do anything to force dormancy?
I don't force dormancy besides removing the growdomes in October. I think about 90% of my plants are pretty good at following the season even under growlights. It was 100% when they were in a sunroom:)
These are gorgeous! What a collection! Would you say you are the original creator of many new species?
No, I just make a few for myself. Mark Rubnitz, Damon Collingsworth, Bob beer and larger companies like BCP are the originators of a lot of the sought after hybrid's and cultivars currently on the market
Lovely collection!! Could you talk about how you water the mexican pings in the mineral substrate? How often do you keep water in the tray or how long it can stay dry?
Tray method, rain water, I fill them up about once a week when the tray is completely dry and soil at the top of the pots begins to dries out
Really nice setup! How long do you run your lights? I use a combo of the 5000k and 6500k Barrina t8 lights
16hrs/day
@@AndrewsStickyLeavesI’m wondering if I’m giving mine more light than they need. I have 3 tubes per shelf at 13 hours a day. I love the form factor though! Perfect for my wire shelves.
Does the fluval stratum accelerate the ping growth? Increase flowering? Does it degrade rapidly?
yes, the added minerals do accereralte growth. no it does not break down since it is inorganic
@@AndrewsStickyLeaves I’ve noticed that it’s easily crushed into a powder
Awesome set up! Do you add pure gypsum powder to your soil mix for your gypsicolas?
Yup about 1 teaspoon!
YAY! Finally! I love these kind of video! I just bought those Barrina T8s and then I read on their website that the temperature is 2900K, so I thought about returning them, since the ideal temperature for carnivorous plants is 6500K. But after seeing your video and the one made by Carnivorous Plants Hub, I am deciding to keep them. They're still in the box... I already use Barrina T5 pinkish white and Yescom 225 white. The T5s colour them up nicely, but not nearly as well as the Yescoms.
Yay glad you like the videos! And I agree they aren't 100% perfect but they are cheap to buy and run per month which IMO makes them my favourites
you have group of plants carnivorous?
How buy? ❤❤❤
Brilliant Setup! very aesthetic and efficient. Thank you for sharing and excellent information, as the rest of your videos.
I have always gone for efficiency... The aesthetics are new 🤣
Can you please post that fertilizing video? I am patiently waiting. :)
A really nice collection of pings and a very informative and cool video ! thank you for sharing. One question : what kind of lights do you use and and how many FC/lumens are your pings getting ( and how far down are they from the light fixtures )?
Barrina LED T8 full spectrum white/pinkish whites. 12"s away for 14-17hrs /day depending on the season
@@AndrewsStickyLeaves Thank you for that info, I really appreciate it !
@@ooooooooo164 np (:
Have any Mexican Butterwort experts used LECA (expanded clay aggregate) in their potting media?
I have seen some people use pure LECA, but most people I know prefer akadama over LECA
How do you feed them bloodworms?
Thanks for reminding me! I actually recorded a video but forgot to post it. :)
@@AndrewsStickyLeaves thanks 👍
@@AndrewsStickyLeaves When are you going to post the bloodworm fertilizer video? Blessings to you from Texas.
Will this mix also work well for the pinguicula primuliflora variety?
No, primulifora is a temperate ping. I would recommend 50/50 peat and sand or peat and pearlite
Awesome video Andrew. I loved your ping mix video. Have you ever heard of anyone using coal slag? Would love to learn about your fertilizing habits
Thanks! I have not heard of anyone using coal slag. If you are willing to experiment I would love to hear your results! I fertilize with bloodworms every 2-3 weeks. I'll 100% make a video in the next week or so :)
I will look for a sacrificial ping! It is inert so should work! @@AndrewsStickyLeaves
Please keep me posted! :)@@ccarroca1
Im in Ontario and got my qualisorb from Napa Auto parts.
Here's The Biggest problem with all you Carnivorous youtubers, GIVE US LINKS!!! if you're going to give examples of what you're using, then how about you post links to materials and make things more understandable.
Links would help, however I usually Google Search the product. That seems to work well. Blessings to you from Texas.
I love fluval stratum and ur right, it aint cheap lol. I also use qualisorb for my semi hydro house plants but thx for the tip, i will try with my pings also (fellow Canadian)
Hey fellow canuk here, I was just curious where you get the pumice and fluvial stratum? And specifically what brand for the fluval stuff, I've come across is fluval stratum for shrimp at aquarium stores and wasn't sure if this is the one you're talking about.
Pumice from local garden stores, fluval from aquarium stores. I believe petland also sells bio stratum which should work just fine. If you can't find pumice I wouldn't worry you can use any other chunky organic rock. And YES! the stuff for shrimp is what I use lol
How long does it take for the seeds to grow into plants and produce flowers?
To be honest I don't know and it depends! All my SG pings I sow in tissue culture (TC) so it would differ from sowing the old fashioned way. I have had plants bloom in about a year to two years from TC. So I would assume from seed to flower the OG way maybe 4-6 Years?
Welp that explains a lot. I got a brand new ping in the mail and killed in in like 3 days because my soil had way too much moss in it and therefore was way too wet. It rotted away super fast. I have perlite, sand, and peat moss and I did like equal parts each. However, california carnivores, the seller I got from, has their own soil mix. I'm debating on just buying that from them as well when I get a second ping to try.
Yes try it again! Pings can be forgiving so a LFS sphagnum mix 50:50 with pearlite can work. However I would recommend letting that mix dry slightly between watering. Sometimes after pings arrive in the mail it can be a good idea to rinse them with distilled water to get rid of any surface fungi or diet after shipping. May I ask what species you purchased? Often times some species are more diva's than others and even in a mineral mix melted quickly after shipment.
Any new updates?
this was the first summer in my new apartment.... lots of pings were not looking their best. I plan to do an update in the next month or two and things go into succulent phase and start blooming!
totally incredible plants
Thanks!
Thanks for the gypsum tip! I’m going to try that with my pings! I see a few pings in your collection that I don’t have…I live in Texas so the weather has been brutally hot. I will wait until the weather gets a bit cooler before I order anything. Glad I found your channel! New subbie!
Make sure it's a gypsum loving pings. I only use it for gypsicola and hybrids if I'm experimenting
How long does it usually take for the ping to get their color?
usually about a month once under high light. fertilizer helps speed up the process :)
What temperature do you sterilize it at
I use boiling water for regular media
for tissue culture media 121C ~20psi for 20min in a pressure cooker
I see your Winnipeg mug, i just moved there and have a fascination for pinguicula. I was curious where you find yours? I’ve ordered some from crystal star nurseries, but I’m really wanting to find local sources.
I got it during my undergraduate degree in chemistry at the UofW :)
Totally realized I read this wrong lmao. I import pings from the states since I can just drive across the border. I would recommend Myself, or Plantzzhut on Instagram for pings. Quebec carnivores is on Facebook and of course there is always Brads greenhouse. I got my first ping from Willy at Little green monsters however I am not sure when his store is opening back up but when it does he is my #1 choice :)
I am having a hard time taking care of Pinguiculas any tips to grow them here in Canada? Also does the chunky diatomaceous earth helps kill spider mites or any other pest? Can this kind of media be use as well for Venus Flytrap and Sundews?
chunky diatomacous earth would not kill pests. you would probably need the powder. I would not use this mix for anything other than pings. I would recommed a 1:1 peat and sand mix for VTFs and dews.
When’s the next update?
Right now! Ahaha sorry it has been a while (grad studies has been slightly overwhelming) going to try to make updates as I repot and rearrange the collection.
bonjour. superbe collection. comment faites vous pour avoir des jolies couleurs? la lumiére?
I use yescom 225 wwhite lights and I fertilize with shults cactus and succulent fertilizer on the leaves
Wrong! Succulent stage is very much to look at
(I really like them too! I love small dorky succulents) :p
How dry does the substrate become at the surface before you know you need to water again? And do your pings have to sit in standing water to keep their mineral substrate moist or does the peat layer take care of moisture loss?
Generally let the tray dry out but not the soil, when in succulent phase you cut way back on the watering to letting the media dry out a bit before tray watering maybe a 1/4 inch of water
Hey great question! I am generally a lazy waterer so I do tend to let the post dry out a little between waterings. The peat in the bottom half does help prevent the full pot from going bone dry. However, in general on my watering schedule the top inch of the pot does dry out between waterings and that is where all of the ping roots are! Don't worry that's fine because in their native habitats they live in cliffs so it's completely normal that they would dry out between waterings in the wild. My advice is they are succulents so they are more hardy than you would think :) (expect emarginata and a few other homophyllus species they like being wet and humid all the time ahaha)
How long do they live?
they are perennials! so indefinetly if taken care of :)
