Had no clue this was a thing. Why is there 8 man football? Is it cuz of student population? I really don’t see a point fr
Yes, very big in rural smalltown settings across the US. Mostly due to the low school population/enrollment numbers
What software do you use for your playbook. Thx much appreciated
I originally just used the Hudl playbook tool, but I only use Google slides now. It is a great free tool!
Thank you for the information. My highschool plays 8-man and this really helped knowing what to do
Great interview!
Thanks, I agree! It was a good one!
do you have a playlist of pass concept or pass plays for 8 man you wouldn't mind sharing?
Sure, follow me on Twitter-X @8manbreakdowns and send me a message!
@@8ManBreakdownsit says I can’t message you.
@@ethanmorton7122 Sorry Coach, try emailing me at coachengelken@gmail.com
Hey man, been on your page a lot over the last year and commented a few times. Wrapped up my 2nd year as an assistant. We went 14-0 on the year. Outscoring opponents in the playoffs by an average of 52-5. In the semis and state championship we gave up a combined 6 first downs. The only TD we gave up was a kick return. Currently hold a 28 game win streak; 11th longest in Oklahoma 8 man history. I coach for Tipton Oklahoma. Check out MaxPreps to look at the scores!
Congrats Coach, that's great stuff! Reach out to me on Twitter!
I would like a link sent to me
Sounds great coach, reply to this message with a good email address and I will send it to you! Or you can message me on X/Twitter @8ManBreakdowns and I’ll do the same
Having a problem on X with my message. What software are you using to drawl your plays?
I use a Huion drawing tablet with the epic pen application all with Mac computer!
Split veer next?
In trips is that f or slot wr always ineligible or is there a way to make all three eligible without adding the fourth wr
Great question Coach! As long as you have 5 players on the LOS, that F can be moved around or could be eligible in a trips set. Hopefully that answers your question!
Coach all of your content is great! Also wonderful hearing from other coaches about their background and philosophies. With it being an 8-Man site is 💯 needed.
Thanks a lot Coach, really appreciate the kind words! Planning to do many more in the future!
You’re very much welcome and definitely look forward to it! 💯
Hey Coach, S in Hudl is for Score. Some teams will have a single clip showing the scoreboard
That’s awesome, I had no idea. I always put that as extra points/conversion! Thanks for sharing!
How can I learn about the "Feed the Cats" program? I'm a 1st year 8 man coach after 38 yrs of 11 man....I'm hungry to learn! Coach Marty
I think the best place to start is by watching Tony Holler’s videos on UA-cam!!
I need this
Great video, thanks.
Thank you, really appreciate the kind words!
We don’t follow really any of these rules, we run a much different style of offense but i loved this breakdown.
As coaches we all do things a little different from one another! Thanks a lot Coach, I really appreciate the feedback!
I’m just an assistant coach, going into my 2nd year into the profession. Although I’ve grown accustomed to what we run I definitely note some of these things down. I love the looks of some of these reads & in time I believe we could incorporate some of these things without having to change too many rules in our scheme. Keep pushing brother you’re making a difference in the coaching world.
@@lanechandler886 Absolutely and if anyone ever takes 1 thing away from my channel then if I’ve accomplished my goal! Thanks for the kind words Coach, and good luck this season!
Is q rotating left or right? On the glance rpo
Personally we don’t rotate or move much if any, just read the defender and if we do make the decision to throw - we’re getting it out as fast as possible!
@@8ManBreakdowns hmm I'm not sure how the QB can read and get into position to exchange ball with rb if read requires.. RB has to loop and cross his face while qb standing there with square shoulders?
@@eelyak37 Sorry, I may have misunderstood your initial question! I’d say the rotation depends on which side you run the glance too and which hand your QB throws with. The RB is still crossing the path of the QB no matter what with it being a designed run, and personally our handoff mesh action remains the same as if it is a true run and not an RPO. But if the QB’s read causes him to decide to pull and throw - then yes he will reset his base ready to throw, point his shoulders and get it out as fast (and accurate) as possible! Does that answer your question?
Watch almost all your breakdowns coach, appreciate your work.
Thanks a lot coach, really appreciate you tuning in!!
Let's go!
Thanks, coach!
No problem, you’re welcome coach! Thanks for tuning in!

Ever been to the 8man Allstar game?
Yes, played it in after HS and just helped coach in it last weekend and it was a great experience!
Do you have an NFHS account?
I do not, our school has one; but I honestly do not like the camera quality!
2022 was my first year coaching football. Love 8 man. Played it for 7 years. First year coaching I worked with QBs/RBs and Safety’s. We had a really successful year, went 14-0. Learned a whole lot. Ready for year 2. Our entire film is on NFHS but like you said the camera quality is bad on the website. Enjoy the page man 👍
@@lanechandler886 That’s awesome coach! If you have a twitter page, go and check me out on there and I’ll send you a direct message - would love to talk and hear more about your season!
Coach, have you ever had an issue with the backside end?
To be honest I don’t use much triple option anymore, but we didn’t have much trouble with backside DE. IF we did, we’d sometimes widen our splits to slow him down or use a motion guy or TE to just block him. Hope this helps, if you have more questions feel free to shoot me an email or message me on Twitter!
@@8ManBreakdowns I’ll shoot you a DM on Twitter then
Any under center jet series in 8 man?

Hey coach do you plan to do Tennessee ?
Yes I do! I have a couple others I’m going to do first, but I most definitely will!
Hey coach! I love your videos, there is a chance to send you a message or email? Best regards
Thank a lot for the support! Yes, feel free to send an email to coachengelken@gmail.com
I'm about to try out for an 8 man pro league (QB position). I've read the rulebook and the rules about how defenses can line up have me anticipating a formation you didn't talk about which could be called a 3-1-4 (3 DL, a Mike, and 2 CBs and Safeties). I've been designing most of my passing concepts to attack that defensive set. Have you ever seen that set ran?
Great question! I have seen it ran, but it’s rare as a base defense. It’s more of a situational defense that we see. The majority of teams we see are heavy run teams and the 3-1 is very susceptible to the run. In obvious passing situations, several 8-man teams will run it especially against the spread, but it is essentially always used with man-to-man coverage!
Love your content sir. Been coaching 8 man for a few years, HC for last 2 .. still adding info to the tool belt!
Awesome, thanks for the kind words! i’m glad to hear it coach!!
I would love to have your template and any plays you want to share. I am new to 8 man football and trying to transition to it.
Email me @ coachengelken@gmail.com and I will send you the template and can help in any way!
Your 7 linemen story hits home for me, as the formation i played most of my senior year, was a 6 man line with our freshmen running back (fastest guy on the team) and our 4 year starting fullback. No "QB" because both of our QBs got injured in the first 2 games of the season and we didn't have anyone else that could throw the ball more then 10 yards. For the last two games of the season we moved the strong end up to strong upback with the fullback in a wing over the strong end. I don't remember why we did that because we still couldn't throw but i know part of the reason was so that we could motion them to other side and run away from an all-state DE. We mostly ran power and sweeps, however our inexperienced running back had problems hitting the holes. I don't know how you coach your line, but my coach taught us to put out helmets in their crotch area. Which was fun when most the teams we went agents stood up.
I've alway thought having a running back who could throw the ball really exploits most 8 man defenses. Additionally, if playing on a 50 yard wide field throwing the ball to the sideline can really exploit a corner.
No doubt, absolutely agree!
I’m excited to be the first person to view this.
Hey Coach what's the program you use there for plays?
Hey Coach! I use Hudl playbook, but sometimes just use Google slides to create play art also, both work great!
Whats the most unusual offense you've ever played against?
That's a great question! I'm going to add this question to one of my upcoming podcasts, thank you for the comment! Honestly I've seen several unusual offenses over the years, but probably the most unusual was a constant formation-shifting single wing style offense. Thinking back on it now, it was very confusing, unorganized and ineffective so my guess is that it was also confusing and unusual for the players running it!
Great video. I run no huddle with wristbands and checking into a new play can cause problems. Work closely with QBs receivers and RBs so we can audible and check it in the spot pretty well.
That’s awesome Coach! I 100% prefer both no huddle options over the old school huddle. I actually used wristbands for 2 years and really liked it also, both are great options and simple for the players!
Hey coach I have to say I am loving ur info. It's so hard to find 8 man info. I'm in southwest Kansas and just started coaching this year in jh. We are combined for this season with another school but I will be on my own next year with my town. I would love to sit down with u some time and pick ur brain if u have time after the season
Hey thank you very much coach! I’m really glad that I’ve been able to help! Would love to sit down and talk with you after the season, shoot me an email @ coachengelken@gmail.com anytime!
Our run centric, everyone starts league requires exacly 4 defenders on the line (for learning purposes and to let plays develop) we run like a 4-4-0 where the outside LBs are corners off the line for coverage and contain (and are a spot to hide your liability players). DT's 2 gap, MLB's need to be studs, and the ends need to be monsters 😆.
Nice, that’s interesting! So how do you assign pass coverage out of the 4-4?
@@8ManBreakdownswe are 5th and 6th grade so we don't get too many screens or shotgun... So the corners have whoever is on the end of the line. LB's have RB's. The monster ends disrupt everything/contain outside runs.
@@anman424 Nice, I like that!
Followed Kelso’s career at Platte Co HS very closely. Had a lot of Shane Falco to his game. One of the best the area has had to offer in the last few decades.
One of the most underrated athletes in recent history to come out of the Metro area!

More good stuff coach! We are installing full offense now! Everything is based on Navy's triple option, we drill mesh read for 10-15 minutes every day. Have a great season... Coach O
That’s awesome and thanks for the kind words Coach! Good luck to you this season also!!
What age group are you most experienced in?
I coached JH for 2 years, but this will now be my 7th year of coaching varsity HS football. So the HS age is the group I have the most experience in and I love it!
Great video. Thanks- Coach BomB Goodwin
No problem Coach, glad to help!
Looking forward to the first podcast. Drop me some good nuggggggsss
Great
Coach E, great breakdown. One quick question, why don't you chip the end? We run this out of wishbone, power I, single wing. In your first example, we have our Y chip the end on his way to the backer, forcing the end to commit in or out, making the read easier for the QB. guess a lot would have to do with how good the end is as well Can you dive a little deeper on this?
Thanks Coach! Great question, and chipping is definitely an option. We have chipped if teams align their DE's head up with our TE's. Like you said it can also depend on how good the end is, but if the DE is lined up extra wide we always taught our TE's to free release directly to the LB as quick as possible. Now, if the DE was head up and really jammed our TE's then we would even outside release at times to widen him and make it an easy read for QB or automatic give on the dive. Mixing it up also seemed to confuse opposing DE's at times and was a good way to try to slow down stud DE's. Absolutely, I will dive more into this in an upcoming video here in the next couple weeks!
@@8ManBreakdowns Thanks Coach E. Also, we tend to stay at 18-24" splits, basically as wide as we can get away with, what are your thoughts on splits? Finally, in Illinois, we started 8man football 5 years ago for the small schools, unlike elsewhere in the country, Illinois teams tend to stay with a 4-4 or 3-3 stack Defense. Coach O
@@timoman6071 Another great question Coach! For splits, we always use 2 foot splits and it has worked well for us. Occasionally we would widen to 30" splits if we go spread with only 3 down lineman. Here in Kansas, the primary defense is a 3-2, but their are several teams that run a 3-3 stack or a 4-2, and even some 2-man fronts are being used quite often now, but I have never seen a 4-4! I'd be interested to see what pass coverages 4-4 teams use. Thanks for your questions Coach! Do you mind if I use your questions in an upcoming video of mine?
@@8ManBreakdowns Absolutely, feel free to use questions! Always looking to learn from others! Have you thought about hosting interviews with 8 man coaches from around the country? Illinois, Michigan, Kansas, Iowa....? Finally, we will roll up our 4-2 into a 4-4 against a jumbo power I / wishbone / diamond formation. We even put in four LB's with 4 jumbo linemen. Primarily against a team we know is going to run. Outside backers have man coverage, however, we typically don't allow anyone to release. Real smashmouth football. A lot Illinois teams will use jumbo personnell in short yardage/goal line / 2 pt situations. With the 4-4, we like to stunt our tackles and inside backers to disrupt traps, outside backers have contain. Coach O
@@timoman6071 That’s a great idea to bring other coaches on the show from around the country! I would absolutely be up for doing something like that. I’ll try to get something like that started and in place this November when we get into the offseason! Would love to have you on and talk more about anything you’d be willing to share with other coaches! Feel free to contact me anytime via email coachengelken@gmail.com
Really appreciate your videos. Your explanations are so simple still implying some knowledge.
Thanks, that means a lot! I’m just trying to help anyone looking for it!
@@8ManBreakdowns I just took a job this year as an 8 man football head coach is och and I've only known 11 man my entire life. Just seeing how you can transition some of the same schemes into the game makes it makes it a lot more simplified for myself. And you said it in one of your videos there's really not a whole lot of information out there for 8 man.
@@austonreed Congrats and best of luck to you!! Yes, there are definitely limited options for 8-Man and I’ve been around 8-Man my entire life (except JUCO) so I wanted to dedicate my videos specifically to 8-Man!
Very well done.
