Day hikes in Middle and East Tennessee. Hikes and short walks in the Upper Cumberland. Also show scenes from our RV trips near our home town.
Three Arches, A Log Cabin Church, And An Old Train Trestle
Today, Randy Neal and I drove a big loop along the backroads of Big South Fork and Daniel Boone Forest. We saw three arches, Kill Bear, Rattler, and Hickory Knob. We also found an old, unique log cabin church. While driving along Rock Creek, we found an old train trestle. On the way back, we found a very interesting bluff with a pond at its base.

We explored Groom Ridge in Big South Fork looking for old home places, bluffs, and overlooks. My hiking partner was Jimmy Staffey.
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
Переглядів 187Місяць тому
If you want to avoid the Cades Cove crowd, try driving the short Roaring Fork Nature Trail. In the center of Gatlinburg, turn onto the Airport Road and you will soon be on a loop that takes you to the trail. The road is narrow and steep but gives you an idea as to how folks lived in the mountains. You can also park and hike one of the shorter trails to Mt. Leconte.
Autumn in Big South Fork
Переглядів 1172 місяці тому
My hiking companions were Randy Neal and Jimmy Staffey. We explored the southern end of Big South Fork with our first stop at Potter's Double Arch. We then hiked to White Oak Overlook. From there, we explored an old home place then walked on to Gun Rock. On the way back to Burnt Mill, we stopped at the Honey Creek Overlook to check out the fall colors.
Summerville Heights
Переглядів 1212 місяці тому
Along with son Jacob, we hiked in what as kids we called Williams Woods. This area was owned by the Williams family since the early 1900s and was also called Summerville Heights. One mystery is a name carved into a bluff of Orpha Boone. Local legend says she was possibly related to Daniel Boone. There is also a very faint date that may be 1830.
Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area
Переглядів 1173 місяці тому
Today, I hiked with Randy Neal, Tim West, and Jimmy Staffey. We wanted to check out the storm damage from the recent high winds that ripped through Pogue Creek. From Black House Road to the Mesa Top Overlook is clear. Also, from Highway 154 to the overlook is clear. The canyon however is in horrible shape. Judging from the number of blow downs, it may be awhile before the trail is fully clear.
Waterloo & Cookeville City Lake Falls

Jimmy Staffey led Melinda Watters, Randy Neal, and myself to a great explore in Big South Fork. We saw DW Arch, New Salem Land Bridge, and Claw Arch. We also explored a couple of old cemeteries.

After finding some old family photos, I went back to Rock Island State Park to see if I could find where we stood while making these shots.
Solitude

Sometimes I need solitude to gather my thoughts. Bee Rock is a place that allows you to reconnect with nature and get rejuvenated. It is also a special place where I can sit and stand where my parents stood in 1948.
"Camping" Out
Переглядів 1175 місяців тому
If you truly love something, you find a way to continue the activity even as you get older. Decades ago, we backpacked and slept on the ground. Now we sleep in a RV. It allows both of us to get outside together and enjoy nature.
Window Cliffs Falls
Переглядів 4636 місяців тому
On the first day of summer, I revisited Window Cliffs. I had spent lots of time there when I was much younger. It is now a State Natural Area and accessible by anyone wanting to enjoy pristine scenery. It is located south of Cookeville TN on Cookeville Boat Dock Road.
Hurricane Ridge Road

Today, we explored Hurricane Ridge Road in Big South Fork. We walked a horse trail to a fantastic overlook above White Oak Creek. We then explored the area around Potter's Arch and found a nice waterfall. Lastly, we made a quick trip to Honey Creek Overlook. On the way home, I stopped for a few pictures at Rugby.
A Small Arch and two Great Overlooks
Переглядів 1867 місяців тому
We were in Big South Fork to explore Gar Blevins Road. We found a small arch named Eyeball then we hiked to the North White Oak Overlook. We then drove down to the Cumberland Valley Trailhead and enjoyed the great views from the Laurel Fork Overlook.

Thank you Kerry
Where is this area at please? Wonderful area! Thank You!
Daniel Boone Forest
what a great adventure! so many cool things hiding in plain site.
Amazing what the leaves hide! Hope you are doing well.
@kerrywoolbright5716 doing very well, thanks! lots and lots of travelling. thanks for sharing another adventure! 🙂
It’s amazing how many really neat things we found considering how little actual hiking we did. I’m thrilled with how the day turned out. The only thing I’d been to before was Hickory Knob Arch. There’s another drive or two we can take on another dreary day or two this winter. You have put together a nice video of the day. Thanks my friend.
I won’t even be sore tomorrow. Man every stop was awesome. Excited about digging into the mining operation in Cooperative
👍
Your video was truly beautiful and inspiring. As a fellow creator, I appreciate the effort you put into it. Sub and 👍9
After all the progress we had made with the feet dangling. We’ll have to start from square one.😂
I guess a meet up at Angel Falls Overlook and we will take notes this time around😂
It’s good to see you and Staffey out and about. It’s the last fairly warm day we’re going to have for a while. Someone spent a lot of time under that rockhouse. They left their cooking utensils out there. It is harder to find more “modern” homesites. They didn’t build the big old chimneys with fireboxes when they used cast iron stoves. You found a lot of rusty metal though. That’s a nice area to be in. I’m going to have to get back down to East Laurel Creek this winter. I hate that hill though. Enjoyed it Kerry. Take care my friend.
My guess is a temporary home like Maude’s
When you said you guys went to the mountains I didn’t realize it was the Smoky Mountains. I drove that loop around 20 years ago and really enjoyed it. It does give away how the folks lived and survived in the mountains. I guess we have educated ourselves on what to look for around these old homesites. There’s a lot more than cabins and out buildings.
Started seeing old rock fences and foundation stones everywhere. Was going to do a few short hikes but I was very unprepared. Windchill up there was awful. Again made me wonder how puny we are compared to them.
Very nice Kerry!
Wow, those older structures certainly do add to that trails charm. Yup, one I'd find myself visiting for sure! Right along the river too. Wonderful stuff!!
Yep hits home as to how hardy these folks were.
Love the old structures.
We always drive this when we are up there. Amazing how after BSF, I spot so much more, stone fences etc
I had no interest in such things until I started hiking with you guys. It's like a fever now. Can't go anywhere without looking for old homeplaces.
@@jimmystaffey3625what amazes me is how tough they were. The one dog trot cabin makes me wonder how they survived those mountain winters.
Hello sir actually, my name is Jason and and I live in Texas Bank families on places at the twins over generations and generations since the 70s and I just love to point out this video and I go there all the time. I love this video hello
This day was everything we planned on plus a lot more. Three short, easy hikes to outstanding and different sites. The fall colors were better than I expected too. It’ll be hard to beat a day like this! White Oak Overlook is one of my favorite overlooks in the park. It’s awesome! Nice video my friend. We’ll get out there again, somewhere, soon. Take care!
Have to go back. I forgot about Potters Cave😪
That is really quite a fascinating area with some very nice pops of colour indeed!! What a marvelous show of falls spledour from the view point!! Awesome!!
Colors are doing about the best they can considering the drought we have had.
Nice day y'all had.
Yes indeed
Hi Kerry, my name is Bill Reed with Happy Hikers of Knoxville and I will be leading a group here on November 14. I will do the scout either this Thursday (10/17) or next Thursday. I believe the group would enjoy it much more if I could make it one way at 4 - 5 miles rather than the 6.4 out and back from 154. Is there room for 3-4 cars at the Mesa trail head? Also, have you heard anything about clean up on the canyon section of the trail? Thanks, Bill
The parking area was expanded and will easily hold 4 cars now. Judging from the damage and that it depends on state money, I don’t see it being cleared any time soon.
@@kerrywoolbright5716 Thanks Kerry
@@BillReed-ok2or Pogue website still says down. You can hike in from Blackhouse to Mesa then go down to killdeer and check it out. Wouldn’t go past there though. From Parking on 154, trail forks so you can go out and back on a loop.
@@kerrywoolbright5716 Thanks again Kerry. Was unable to do the scout today. Might go tomorrow as I have to get the hike details on the newsletter before the end of the month. This way I will have time to pivot off to Lilly Point or another trail. Just incase, any other recommendations in the area other than Pickett? (did that earlier in the year)
@BillReed-ok2or up divide road past Pogue on right is Middle creek nature trail.
Nice area Kerry.
Not sure exactly where you are in relation to the effects of Helene, but sure hope all is well in your area. Has been all over the news here as to the devastation. One pretty spectacular area! Awesome the rock formations and the power of water erosion over time!
We got 5 inches of rain , some wind but nothing like to the east. It is almost indescribable.
Nice hike fellers!
We only stayed one night in the ER
I’m not going to show any storm damage either. There are way to many nice things to see on that trail to show anything else. Except for the heat and humidity, it was a great day. We’ll need to visit the overlooks again in a few weeks when the leaves are turning. Nice job my friend.
Yes we do maybe throw in Ky Overlook. Couldn’t film the damage. I was too busy fighting for my life🤪
Rough hike. But it's on us. No one's fault but ours. Still beautiful country.
I am blaming Nichole😂
Amazing
We're finally get some rain here,it's rained light and steady since last night but we need a few days of it to make any difference.
Maybe that tropical depression will help you towards end of week. Too far east to help us.
Now that sure is one beauty of an area. Indeed, the water levels hear are at a record low!!
Worst here since drought in 2007. Well the good news is mowing is over😊
@@kerrywoolbright5716 I'm thinking that just one mow will do it for me...or maybe just let it be! LOL
FULL WATCH to the END….amazing Natural Arches Kerry. Great Sharing. Chat again real soon!
Hey Kerry, like 13 here for you from Mr. Garry and Mrs. Betty. We found you on Bruce’s channel! Awesome adventure and hike.
I’m pretty thrilled about how the day went. Three nice arches, beautiful weather and good friends always makes for a great day. Thanks my friend.
Wasn’t it a good day. False Fall gave us a nice respite from the heat. New Salem was pretty amazing.
Pretty cool arches. Great bunch of photo's Kerry.
Thanks they were so big was hard to get good shots but we had a good day
Awesome day. Awesome friends. Awesome beauty.
Was a great day. I was needing some BSF😀
Those are some pretty special places!! The natural arches are always so spectacular to see! The wonders of nature...and the power behind erosion!! Quite something!!
No doubt. Looking at these you wonder how much time it took for these to form.
I like forest
Looks like a real nice park. I guess you couldn't see Grandfather from there.
Dang trees had me blocked
There's a nice little place for sure. Really like those cabins...just always nice to see them around for an alternative for people. So, what great inspiration did you come up with at the point! lol I wish more of our camp ground would stay open longer in the season, even when they do turn the water off...those times are some of the best for camping with no bugs at all. Hope you do have yourself a great week ahead.
Yep we thought about selling out and moving there but the water issue changed our minds. My inspiration was we need to camp more😀
Beautiful locations
Now that sure is a spectacular area!! Can sure see why it is a special place.
Yep in high water it’s really something. Lots of kayakers show up.
Sure looks like a great place for it!
When I saw the first couple views, I knew you were at Bee Rock. I spent all my teenage years crawling over that rock! Two young men came up from Tenn Tech and were repelling down the face of the rock. I was probably 13 and was watching them when they asked me if I wanted to try it. I said sure and over the edge I went! No belay and it was homemade equipment! God watches over idiots and children! I was a little of both! 100 feet to the bottom, it was great! Thanks for the memories Kerry!
We rappelled down years ago but I did have a professional helping and watching. Scared me so much that I couldn’t stand for awhile when I got to the bottom.
@@kerrywoolbright5716Yep, the hardest part for me was going from vertical to horizontal at the top!
@@jackadkisson7329 me too!
Pretty awesome Kerry. To stand in your folks' footsteps. We all need a place like that!
I thought your description of yourself was very spot on. Very Nordic! Nice little campgrounds. Pretty views from up there and didn't look too crowded! I hear ya about finding ways to carry on. Putting lots of thought into that myself. Days are numbered with my wife and I doing things together unless we change how/what we do. Nice discussion Kerry. Hope you're doing well!
Well,I happen to know you're 5'5 300 lbs. and are bald with a big scar on your nose.Seriously,I enjoyed you ageing while talking, lol. If truth be told you're in better shape than me since I've hiked with you and you're always way ahead of everybody else. Very nice video my friend.
Lost weight now 270
Great video. We should strive to enjoy every moment of every day. The Bible tells us that no one has the promise of tomorrow.
Excellent video ,thanks for sharing . enjoyed to the end with ads
Nice looking area. Like the falls. Looked like you had a great day.
Too hot should have jumped in😁
Delk Creek
Not Delk Creek… that’s Wolf river
Land of the free but no pets allowed let's put some more regulations in
I haven’t ever gone here. Nice! I’ll have to go.
I was worried there for a minute that you'd never be able to wade over them rocks.
My training as a lifeguard when I was a young’un came in handy. That and a hiking pole🤣
I made the hike to Window Cliffs a few years ago. I hiked a big part of the way in my Crocs because of all the creek crossings. Window Cliffs is an amazing rock feature but I’m not sure the waterfall isn’t just as good. Thanks for taking me back there. We need to get together and hike to some more of the waterfalls in that area just off the Cumberland Plateau. Thanks Kerry. Take care my friend.
I had forgotten how wicked the climb out was. 92 degrees didn’t help. Sure hope we get rain in July or lots will be dry. I remember your trip. Seems like you did Burgess as well. I truly was surprised there was so much water at the falls.
Now those falls would be a wonderful destination to escape the heat! Not sure if you were feeling any effects from this recent heat dome, but it got to 42C in the backyard the other day...cooling down now, but even poor Otis was melting in the concrete floor downstairs.
92F or 33C my feet were cool, the rest of me not so much😀
