'Culture-based conservation' approach to supporting governance of Indigenous territories #RIELSS2024
Dr Jayson Ibañez and a team of 10 colleagues from the Philippines presented a seminar titled “‘Culture-based conservation’ approach to supporting governance of Indigenous territories” as part of the RIEL Seminar Series on 22 November 2024 in Darwin, Australia.
Jayson is Director for Operations at the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF). He is also a Professorial Lecturer at the College of Science and Mathematics of the University of the Philippines in Mindanao, an Adjunct Professor at the School of Environmental Science and Management of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, and a RIEL alum.
In this seminar, Jayson discusses key elements of Indigenous governance in relation to the PEF’s culture-based conservation approach. Alongside Jayson, 10 colleagues - Mrs Grace Alo, Mr Hernan Ambe, Ms Mhaya Anog, Ms Melinda Bretania, Ms Jessamae Crisostomo, Dr Agnes Gabuat, Mrs Jimbea Lucino, Mr Warnit Lumista, Mr Melchor Olowan, and Mrs Mecah Utal - also shared their knowledge and experience from their communities and areas in the Philippines.
