Wombat Thunder
Australia
Приєднався 27 січ 2021
Wombat Thunder is the way we play Combat Mission, especially Combat MIssion Cold War, Shock Force 2 and Black Sea as well as Battle for Normandy and Final Blitzkreig.
A wombat is a combination miniature grizzly bear and bulldozer that no obstacle can stop, and we play Combat Mission the same way.
Wombat Thunder is curated by Lance Corporal Joe Hartley, world renowned Combat Mission expert and guide, really good at driving Shermans, Panthers, Challengers, Leopards, T-72s, and infantry laden BTRs into battle. The LC loves comments most of all, but like and subscribe to get more content.

The 5 month battle for Marawi was brutal in nature, but a feature was how the Phillipine Army and Marine Corp gave heart to their vehicles. The threat from older model RPGs was real. I've included some extra footage to recognise the Phillipine soldier in the fight. The model is the V-150 Commando from Hobby Boss which I had intended as a paint mule since the kit was a poor stamping, but then I ...

Finishing this mission has been the most difficult of my combat mission scenarios. Every turn I made I was faced by 2, 3 or even 4 or more Russian guns, not to mention artillery and airpower striking at my forces all day long. I need a damn holiday. This vid is way longer than I anticipated but there are many moving parts to this battle, and I hope it assists other players get through this nigh...

We strike out and look for a victory on the road to the final boss battle, but we get a bloody nose instead. I've played this scenario several times since this result, and the outcomes vary widly: this playing was the worst result of them all (to be expected that I improve in later attempts), but it is a lot of fun. Small, tight, and close quarters it really grips the nerves. Play it! #combatmi...

Inspired by the events of January 2024 in the small village of Stepove, northwest of Avdiivka, when three Ukrainian bradleys confronted a single Russion T-90. Brings back memories of playing Combat Mission Beyond Overlord!! The map is a really good recreation of that map. Actually the entire scenario looks exactly like I remember it.
Дикий папуаский танк
Yep, it has gone mad, a normal day at Wombat Thunder! Thanks for watching.
Imagine drunk driving this "Free WiFi" fella.

Fever Dream
Exactly! It is bit cool to see some AI video from a static model, and in my mind there's only a few frames that work well, and done without having to build a full diorama from scratch. Thanks for watching.
Have you downloaded or played the Fighting in Berlin? that is awesome
Thanks for watching! I don't know that one, is it Combat Mission?
Brilliant! I was absolutely mesmerized by the playthrough Wombat! You remained calm, decisive, and methodically planned each & every move. That was a huge force mate! I own Red Thunder, but could never really get into it b/c it seemed so overwhelming to me. After watching you, I'm ready to dive back into this gem! Thanks and stay well my friend =)
Thanks for enjoying the vid. The main help for the Germans here was the damn mist, if not for that the Germans would've been hammered from all sides by long range fire. Other than that, keeping the Tigers together and in some kind of tactcal formation was important so I could get several barrels on the enemy quickly and destroy them. My mistakes though cost me a Tiger and some Commanders, so its not all tea and biscuits! Thanks for watching!
oh so infantry can see through hedgerows?
To a degree, depending on range to target, gaps and gates, and how close the viewer is to the hedge. Thanks for watching.
It's not the first time you play this scenario.
Every game is a new playing, sometimes things go well, other times pretty badly!
I have a vague memory of playing this mission about ten years ago. Although generally speaking I'm not a fan of fictional battles.
it's very helpful, buddy, thank you for telling about the tips.
Great to know its helpful, let me know if you have tips of your own. Thanks for watching.
is this a scenario? i don't recognise it.
Good question. This was one of my own creations to field test just how a T tank and a bradley might match up. Had to invent a way to bodgy up the cellars though. Thanks for watching!
Interesting cinematic choice.🔹
I figure seeing how CM BS simulates (or tries to) what we can see in real life really shows how brilliantly those Ukr bradleys in the clip performed. Incidentally, even if I reduced the russian crew quality to as low as I can, the result is usually similar.
RPG accuracy is so tragic in combat mission. That shot over the top of the T90 at maybe 8-10 meters was tragic
Put it down to the stress of battle, low light and you'll get what Combat Mission portays so well: as realistic a simulation as any. Thanks for watching!
Very good video, didn’t know cmbs had basements.
CM doesn't but I've found a way to hack a decent solution. Thanks for watching!
Great video! any chance you can provide a link to the map?
The map is still under development, its not bad in the zone the fight was over but other areas are definitely unfinished. Thanks for watching!
Don't think I have heard of Kinetic. It's a beautiful kit and diorama, well done.
I can still see a need for more theory and practice in application. Thanks for watching!
Nice shootin', Tex!
I got two six shooters in their 'roo skin holsters ready to go! Thanks for watching.
Well played. Good tactic to have all six Churchills moving to fire at the same time. The Tiger was unlucky to miss the Churchill and you were lucky (14%) to kill it with your first shot, but I think its true that you 'make your own luck' by using good decisions on the battlefield !
My secret is always to be lucky! But seriously in that game I was helped by weird AI pushing the Germans forward so I could eliminate the Tiger support so quickly: the Churchies have good armour which the ridge tactic feasible. The Tiger on the other hand was pure luck, but the Tiger firing after moving was a low odd shot of destroying a churchie, but it faced 2 shots in defensive fire phase and then another 2 in the fire/move phase, and eventually the Tiger would run out of luck sometime. SF will be great multiplayer when it comes, along with better AI for routing etc. Can't wait for the Marines and Japanese either! Thanks for watching.
Oh the title of this video is very intriguing. The m113s are the worst possible design for a central Europe scenario..
To anyone who plays the Cold war title of this series, be careful when you have your American squads dismounting nearby BMPs that you are have already destroyed and are overrunning and consolidating the position with dismounted infantry. My soldier is as soon as they exited their m113, began shooting at the destroyed bmp or was it a BTR, 20 feet away. And the stupid AI was killing itself from the ricochets of bullets and grenades. I lost a couple of guys in a couple of seconds. So make sure you have arc fire commands that point away from nearby wrecked vehicles.
Dying from ricochets must be the weirdest thing I've heard of in CM! Thanks for watching!
UA-cam is really acting like an incompetent fool. by the way, it's good show, buddy, well done.
Next weeks vid might just be a little more controversial! Thanks for watching!
hey great , another CMCW fan! i tell you though, yes the BMPs can be killed like you see here, it is always satisfying. but they have their gunner under armor, and he usually kills my exposed M113 gunner and then the terrifying ratatatatatatatatata of cannon rounds destroying my track and everyone inside!
If I had to choose a single vehicle in CMCW, BMP-2 would be my fav! Thanks for watching!
@@wombatthunder oh yeah . I cannot believe that the American industrial base could not come up with a infantry fighting vehicle until the M2 Bradley in the early to mid 80s.. I bet it's because fighting in the hot sweaty Vietnam jungle prevented American troops from asking for a enclosed infantry fighting vehicle.
Bro after sf2 bmp got stupid strong in black sea they will really mess your day up!
What did this cost ?
The kit was about AU$25 or so.
I love seeing this model i operated an APC For 2 1/2 years over in wildflecken germany ,that thing went anywhere you pointed it
great vid! got Operation Flashpoint vibes from CMCW
Nice!
Made me want to watch kill bill again 😂
That movie scene was baller. What movie was it from?
Well, I'm sorry to say that the YT I scraped it from didn't give an attribution! So, IDK! Thanks for watching!
I beleive its from the 2008 Russian movie called Admiral but I could be wrong.
@@Madvillain2010 yo thank you, I'll look it up.
If you push your vehicles straight up the middle of the map from your large building to the hamlet in the map centre they are in dead ground all the way and can neither be hit nor seen, then debus your infantry into the buildings and put your tanks hull down in that area, the American tanks make a push left and right and are easily picked off. Then sprint a tank platoon into cover of the buildings close to the autobahn, be careful of the TOW vehicles hull down behind the autobahn, drop arty on them, do not use aircraft until the manpads are taken out otherwise you'll lose them every time to these abnormally accurate redeyes. Call down arty on the large enemy occupied building then rush onto the autobahn, there are a couple of dragon teams so you will likely lose some tanks but once you're on the autobahn it otherwise becomes a duck shoot with fully laden M113's vainly trying to reverse away. Go home, put your feet up, pin another medal on, have a cup of tea.
That's very useful to know, If only I'd known it sooner! 🤣😂🤣
What happened to the Loader's mg? ;) Great paint.
That join isn't well supported, so, a little crooked! And wombat hands are clumsy ...
@@wombatthunder I hear ya, brother! I'm a wargamer/modeler for over 40 years now and that kit lead to the same outcome as your. A bit of brass rod fixed it up nicely on my end.
I've been doing this modelling thing for only a few months so learning step by step as I go (back in the teeange years I wasnt very good at it). I see you also use clips from old movies as well, a great way to bring the subject to life@@weirdwwii8775 subcribed!

Very excited to see this campaign play out! I'm new, so I'm learning on the Shock Force 2 campaign (overmatch ftw), but this one always seemed super interesting (and hard!)
Thanks. The next scen in the campaign is a little more intense, so I'm tossing up whether to do it real time or turn by turn ...
Let's go dude!! I'm more into the WW2 titles, so I love it when an exceptional content creator produces top quality. Especially when it's a campaign from a title I don't get the pleasure of viewing as much. Love the content man, keep it up!
CMBS is all about massive firepower, since everything is spotted so much easier than the WW2 titles (where I keep getting shot from unknown ppl in trees!)
russian movies the fakest movies 🤣😂
True, and some unique footage since they had so many extras ...
what are you talking about?
One of the classic Cold War tanks. By the time I got to Germany, the Leopard 2, was the MBT of the Bundesweher
The Leo 1 was used in the Australian Army for a long time (I nearly called it the Wombat Army 🤣) but then it got replaced by the Abrams. I have the Leo 2 (A4 and A6) on my wish to build list).

Such a great three days. I'm in the Stug IV for the grand parade 5:12. It had some massive clutch issues. Spoke with Jesse the next day, it needs a rebuild. It was really great to meet all the people from the museum.
I was there for Friday and Saturday - took a ride in the T-72 and BMP - very cool. I got on the vid from the museum. So worth the visit!
@@wombatthunder I'll definitely be back next year. The event was great and the staff were amazing. Hopefully, I'll get to ride in the 38t next year. The starter motor had shit itself so as a replacement ride, I chose the Stug IV.
@@lysanderkrieg5474 Next year is a must for me too, definitely on Commanders Deck to get to ride on the Friday. Probably make it a three dayer, so i can see all the vehicles. Some buddies from down south have gone for the last 8 years!

What game is this?
The game is Combat Mission Cold War (available on Steam) and the scenario is 'Between the Farhbahns". Thanks for watching.
"Enemy armour spotted... watch out." *Instantly vaporized by high explosive* The timing of that was hilarious! Poor little jeep crew lol.
That's the kind of fun we have at Wombat Thunder!
wow, very cool! who ever gave you that must be be pretty cool as well....
He's got a keen eye for cool kits!
I think it might be launched grenades exploding on the armour and spalling causing the casualties, rather than a true penetration of the armour
Defintiely the grenades are causing some casualties but not all. And you're right that the modelling may be different from the graphic representation of what's happening.
How about trying to use BTR and BMP for testing under fire from firearms?
Good idea! I'll try to do a couple of shorts that could cover that.
Wow, that was good shot
It was completely totally AI, I just drove the Sherman up the hill looking for infantry with p'fausts waiting behind the hedge. My opponent's reaction in this PvP was "next!", as in "lets get onto the next scenario ...." thanks for watching.
What type of Panther is that? Looks like a MKIV in the trees
The scenario is Barkmann's Corner, so it's a Panther VG (early). The Sherman seems to have spotted the large Panther in the woods while it was turning when it was looking straight at the Panzer. The AI did the shoot as I didn't even know it was there! Thanks for watching!
