100 Years Simeon Ten Holt_Canto Ostinato Jubilee Version_Victor Kraus Group_(Teaser)
100 years Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012) - Canto Ostinato - VictorKrausGroup, Emre Sevindik, Michel de Souza, Pit Brosius
For this project, Victor Kraus (Marimba) is joined by 8 of the best musicians from the
Luxembourgish and international music scene: Kae Shiraki (piano), Aniela Stoffels (flute),
Anik Schwall (cello), Max Mausen (clarinet), Guy Frisch (vibraphone), Emre Sevindik
(electronics), Michel de Souza (voice), and Pit Brosius (conductor). In collaboration with
this team, under the name "VictorKrausGroup," he has developed a hybrid project around
the piece "Canto Ostinato" (1976) composed by the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt. The
project began in 2017 as part of a production by German television NDR at the
international festival "Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" (Germany), and has
continued through numerous concerts, culminating in 2023 with the recording of an album
in tribute to the composer's 100th anniversary during an artist residency at Trifolion in
Echternach (Luxembourg).
Simeon ten Holt used the term "genetic code" to describe the rhythmic foundation of his
piece. It is a quintuplet that develops "Canto Ostinato" by exploring 106 repeated cells ad
libitum. These 106 cells transform and develop, periodically generating new musical
material. A highlight of the work occurs when a pleasant melody emerges from the texture,
contrasting what came before and suddenly transforming the music into a theme and
accompaniment.
"Canto Ostinato" is a piece that sounds different in each performance because each
musician is free to choose, in the moment, which voice and which notated rhythm note to
play and with what nuance. It is a piece that captivates the ear, making one dream,
meditate, and doze off, a piece that delights, fascinates, and reveals a new musical
treasure with each rendition. Its duration can vary from 60 minutes to 24 hours. With its
powerful musical effects, contrasts, and transformations, it creates a strong emotional
response in the listener through its undulating and hypnotic movement.
Having been performed thousands of times, "Canto Ostinato" is one of the most popular
and frequently performed contemporary Dutch compositions. It represents an exemplary
acoustic experience, easy to listen to (as it is tonal), yet maintaining the suspense of rich
and unprecedented music.
Victor Kraus presents an unprecedented version by adding wind instruments, string
instruments, electronic elements, and vocals to this magnificent piece, originally written for
multiple keyboard instruments. Electronics and vocals play a predominant role in this
project, which is conceived as a hybrid project, an artwork, and a sensual performance,
blending a "classical" work with minimalist transformations, electronic music, singing,
lighting, and recitation of poems by Fernando Pessoa, Gianni Rodari, Gabriel Marcel, and
Anise Koltz.
The realization of this final stage of a project that has been developing since 2017 is part
of an artist residency by the "VictorKrausGroup" at Trifolion in Echternach (Luxembourg),
involving a recording production. The album will be released in October 2023 in digital
format and as a double CD under the label "Donemus Records" (Netherlands). This is a
project that must be discovered!
We were very excited to hear this new version of "Canto Ostinato" as a tribute
to the composer, performed by exceptional musicians, and to celebrate the launch of their
new album, "100 years Simeon ten Holt, Canto Ostinato," on October 7th 2023, at the
"Atrium" hall of Trifolion in Echternach/Luxembourg.
This concert was part of the context of "EchterClassic 2023." It is also a "Show-Case Act"
within the framework of "Classical Meeting 2023" organized by "KulturLX."
The "VICTOR KRAUS GROUP": Since 2018, this label has represented a platform for
creating various projects with different participants. "Canto Ostinato" is the first project
under this name. Other projects are currently being planned and will follow in 2024/2025.

Amazing performance and music! Greetings from Kazakhstan, Almaty. Simeon Ten Holt amazingly discovered by mistaken shazam identify. Searched one track from illegal rave party 1989 (kinolibrary) and found this gem))!!!!! Just wow!
They create magic 💖💖❤️❤️🩹❤️🩹
What a great and exciting version of Canto Ostinato!❣
Превосходно!❤
Canot? Ostinato. And it takes 5 years to correct that?
For me a new discovery in music❤ Super Performance 👍👏👏👏
Amazing ❤
Завораживающая музыка) Спасибо музыкантам!
Благодарю, это волшебно!
Outstanding, magical. I've been listening to "Canto" in various interpretations for many years, and this is truly phenomenal. Brought tears to my eyes.
Thanks👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥
Fascinating.....
Грандиозно!
Слёзы на глазах от этой красоты, спасибо
Хочется совсеми поделиться...но ....
wow!
amazing
My compliments for this piece of art. I love every note about it but these are my favorite parts: 16:55 that volume change 32:30 that lonely piano play 40:00 those little mistakes 44:24 that change in melody 58:58 the built-up with the low piano tone 1:24:25 that end part Pure brilliance
32:30 that lonely piano play - it's my favorite part in different interpretations. It's kind of magic and pure beauty. In this version it was so piercingly, I was crying at this moment
this has a totally other atmosphere then the original and it's beautiful !! thank you for uploading this and greetings from Holland.
Thank you so much! If you love this version, check out our newest version with electronics, poems and an opera singer ;) donemus.nl/release/dcv-503-simeon-ten-holt-canto-ostinato/
@@victorkraus8900 Thank you for your kind response. For years i love to hear Simeon and i always feel better, when i am feeling down, he was able to bring a certain cadance to our mind.. I have checked your link and it is a pearl aswell, cool ode to ten Holt and worthy !! Thank again, you are a man with good taste :) Warm greetings and merci. again.
I’d love to hear you tackle Philip Glass’, “Music in Similar Motion”. Just throwing that out there.
Outstanding! Thank you for this performance. Nice video production as well.
This is an amazing performance. I have listened to this work in many versions, but this is a new experience. It seems to me that it would be nice to add timpani here, at the moments of climax on the fortissimo, as, for example, at the 10th minute.
I love this work in all forms, but I tend to prefer the ones that are not limited to keyboard instruments and welcome other Timbres. This arrangement is a Gold Medal example of how to approach a work with both reverence and an open and creative mind. Thank you for sharing this-- I know it will be the soundtrack of my life for years to come!!! There are times you've surprised me and other times you have brought me to tears. (In both cases, this is a VERY GOOD THING.) The only regret i have is that you don't have a Cimbalom in the mix, but that is because I play a similar instrument (Hammered Dulcimer)- it would add something very cool.- as it also combines the percussion and keyboard sound with an almost liquid tone. (Even cooler if you could get Ekaterina Yukhnova as a performer- she is an amazing player, and has many videos on UA-cam She is light years ahead of me.). I wish you luck towards a 2023 album of this, and hope to have a chance to purchase it. Listening a second time-- I just wanted to congratulate you on all the shifts in density and dynamics. I've listened to many versions, but this is by far the bestI I've heard and offering the most variety in textures and dynamics.
Well done!
beau-ti-ful. Not easy to rearrange this for these different instruments than the original two piano's. deep respect
It is written for keyboard instruments, but four pianos were preferred...
<3 <3 <3
This is an amazing modern twist......with a slice of brilliance. Thank you all for this performance!!!! :-)
I must say that it took me a few minutes to get used to the instrumental arrangement, but, I have fallen deeply in love with this version. I have been listening almost non stop for the last week, thank you a lot for this beautiful and touching recording. Will you record other Simeon Ten Holt's works in the future?
Thanks a lot for your feedback! It’s a pleasure knowing people enjoy our version of Canto Ostinato. To answer your question: first we will make an album with nearby this version but adding an electro musician… ;-) this will happen in 2023. Generally speaking there is a high possibility to play and record other works of Simeon TH. I’m thinking about…
This video should have more view then what it has! Bravo, très belle performance!
Thanks a lot for your comment Benjamin! Maybe you can help us with sharing? All the best and greetings!
Очень классно!
Большое спасибо за положительные отзывы
Failed for me... imo, it would have been far more challenging and interesting to make a registration that did not depend upon pitched percussion in any way.
You mean a record without pitched instruments? Just chords, winds, etc...? Sounds also interesting!
Très belle interprétation, bravo, André et M-Dominique Poncin
Merci beaucoup!! Cela nous réjouis si cela plaît!
Goosebumps! What a performance!
Thanks so much!!
A great original ( instruments) interpretation of this master piece 😄👍
Nice indeed!
Thank you!
@@victorkraus8900 The only disadvantage is that Canto might be the most popular but for me one of the less interesting compositions by Simeon Ten Holt. I prefer Lemniscaat, Horizon or Incantatie IV. What would such an arrangement sounds for a piece like Lemniscaat but I understand it has to be a bit main stream. Canto in this very interesting arrangement is really swinging.
@@HarpsichordVinylGallery Sorry for the super late answer! 😑 But yes, the others are super interesting. I think it could be an idea to perform them with the VKGroup in a similar arrangement. The "most popular" is always on one side an advantage but can be on the other side a disadvantage. For me it was a challenge to take such a popular piece and make it "swing" (as you write) in an new way.
Wow! What an amazing performance. I love this multi-instrumental arrangement!
Thanks Andrew for your comment! This makes us happy if you/the public loves this version :-))
CANOT Ostinato? Bijna goed!
WOW ! as experienced Ten Holt and Canto listener this is quite special !
