For August and September Toby Hadoke's Time Travels will be released once a week. The twice weekly releases will resume in October. Thanks for your patience. Here we go chums. What a rewarding experience this has been. But can The Ambassdors of Death contnue to surprise, and to break the mould, and have host Toby pull off a rare victory? Or will the ending be a damp squib? Well, for one last time Toby and special guest Mark Wright delve into this most undersung of Who classics - and loving it to (ker-pow) DEATH is, of course, their moral duty.

Now then, this is one of your host's favourite stories - one he thinks is probably the most underrated story in the whole canon. It was always rather apologetically dealt with in write-ups and fan word-of-mouth was that it was a bit of a mess. So Toby came to it quite late and with low expectations - and was bowled over by it. And it is a love that has never died. Does writer, editor and all-ro...

The conversation continues between Toby Hadoke and Professor Tom Attah on race and representation in Doctor Who. The chat is good natured, the humour is plentiful and the respect is mutual. There are some interesting viewpoints exchanged and I didn't once feel I was being lectured to. An easy, thought provoking listen. Marvelous stuff.

73 Yards definitely has the feel of any of several MR James adaptations. Maybe it should have been the Christmas episode. I think it's heavily implied though (if nothing else then by the sound of a heart monitor) that Ruby dies and then becomes the woman - that as her death approaches, so too does the woman. So I think there _is_ an on-screen death. But maybe not. Ruby delivers (I think) four lines as we watch from the woman's POV for the first time. And though her hand's are on screen at that moment, and not gesturing, I have a vague feeling that the sequence of hand gestures we have seen repeating over and over match those four lines. And I think those four lines are an apology to the Doctor for Ruby having taken so long to free _him_ from whatever torment _he_ has been suffering all those years.

Defining the magic of Doctor Who is no mean feat. However, writer & host Toby Hadoke does so in an entertaining fashion with great style, wit & open personal honesty. There's no other podcast like this out there. You could say it has an indefinable magic all of its own. Which is something i'm very grateful for. Thank you, Toby.

What I really like about this is that you're focusing on what I think is the _whole_ point of the episode. A lot of people have seen it as poking fun at "Gen Z" (even though these people are not Gen Z) and, yeah, having something to say about our reliance on social media. But the key thing for them is the reveal: "Oh, they're white supremacists. I did/didn't notice they were all white, as I watched them living a life that's a bit like mine." Sure, living in the bubble has rendered them unable to deal with the real world. They have an unrealistic estimation of themselves because they've been living in an unrealistic world - a safe world. But isn't an implication of that that they will have an unrealistic estimation of anyone who doesn't fit the profile? Is the bubble a product of their racism, or is their racism a product of the bubble? When they reject the Doctor, it's because he's not like them - they're just swiping right (or is it left?). I find the idea that this episode should have been handed over to be written by a person of colour quite odd. Everyone in the episode is white. The only black character is the Doctor, but how long has _he_ been black? How much racism has _he_ experienced? When the Doctor says he doesn't care what they think, he means it. Why would he care? How could their racism affect him? He's not their equal; he's the superior being here. Their words can't hurt him. He just wants to save them. But he can't because of their mindset. And I think it's important that they are beyond redemption, because we have to see where a road we're already travelling down leads to.

My viewing of "The Legend of Ruby Sunday" was delayed a week, due to watching new episodes online with some friends in the US, and timezone scheduling can be a pain. For once, though, it was serendipitous (a word I first learned a very long time ago from watching "Doctor Who" on the ABC :) ), because it meant we could watch both parts back-to-back as a single extended story. The same friends, on learning I was something of an authority on the original series, have had me occasionally dipping into my DVD collection for curated showings of favourite serials. And again by sheer serendipity, and because Sarah Jane was a companion who spanned both eras, the first one I had selected to view was "Pyramids of Mars". When the reveal dropped, cue transports of mingled astonishment, disbelief, and delight from the New Who side of the link: not only was it the return of a terror (one of the greatest terrors!) from the classic era, but one *with which they were already familiar*. And then, when I quoted "I bring Sutekh's gift of death" a couple of seconds before its reprise in the episode, cue a considerable amount of personal delight that I'd managed to call that particular shot. It's always been such a powerful line, it deserved a second outing fifty years later. Were the episodes perfect? Of course not, where would we whiny "Doctor Who" fans be without nits to pick and holes to poke. But overall, there were plenty of moments that brought genuine joy, or wonder, or satisfaction at a character well-written. (She may not have the formal military rank and experience her dad did, but the look Kate shoots the Doctor at one point would have raised blisters on armour plate. And he knew it too.) Here's hoping we are indeed looking back fondly on all this a couple of decades from now.

Sorry lovely Toby, but basically saying that this is for a new generation, so that makes this all OK, is well, not OK. You cannot possibly think this is a good new iteration of the show, Gatwa alone is like nails on a chalk board. Definitely the best of the new series stuff. Such a shame we didnt grt more Eccleston. Strong disagree in the doctors performance is always good. I really dislike season 17. Id go as far as to say it's my least favourite season of classic who. But nightmare of Eden is one the better stories. Possibly because I feel like Romanas I it a little less, lala ward is so insufferable oh I wish Marie Tamn hadn't left. I do love the way Tom just tells them to go aways then. Such a shame it's spoiled by the oh my legs bit. Still Creature from the pit and nimon can't sniff at it's heels. And I'd still rather watch this than anything after 2010 of new who.

I've always seen Chen as an attempt to create a futuristic race. An amalgamation that might exist in the 40th century, but doesn't now. Certainly if he's meant to look Asian specifically, I don't think it's very successful.

I frequently edit IMDB, and you're absolutely right. It is very easy to add obviously wrong information, and difficult to get it removed. Likewise, I have tried to add obviously correct info before and been denied by the moderators. "Please provide evidence." The evidence is the episode. Watch it. You will see that this actor is not there, and is not credited either. The 60th Anniversary Specials had all kinds of nonsense on there before broadcast. And in fact for the last 2, I went on immediately after broadcast to correct them.

  • @MuchWhittering

On the use of unpleasant language, I'd agree that it's used "innocently" for the time. And I would argue there's worse stuff in other 60s Who that perhaps has less of an excuse. And yes, I believe Peter Purves is a Brexiter, a fact I try and forget, much as I do with my own grandparents...

I wish there was a making of on the DVD too! Kind of bizarre that the most substantial extra on that DVD is a documentary about the McCoy era. Maybe for the distant Season 3 Blu-Rays we can get one. Rex Tucker may be the perfect director for this, if only because his name makes him sound like a cowboy.

Toby’s “Doctor Who” podcasts always give good value, and have a reputation for having an even-handed approach to handling both the rough and the smooth that the programme and its fans have given to the world across its sixty-plus year history. I always enjoy a good audio essay, but these particularly thoughtful, considered, and incisive audio essays, produced shortly after broadcast as a response to the latest series, have provided a calm and rational reaction to the fear and madness that any time of great change can bring along with it in a much-loved creative product that so many people seem to hold close to their hearts. As companion pieces to be enjoyed alongside the programme itself, these episodes are highly recommended.
