This is one of the major groups in the field of Pizzica in the Salento area of Puglia (Lecce and south). Founder Pierpaolo De Giorgi, an ethnomusicologist, began the group along with a few players of the large Italian tambourine, the tamburello, in an effort to recreate and preserve the real, driving essence of the original therapeutic taranetlla-pizzica. Their energy in concert is great evidence of this mission! They are based around Torrepaduli, a town in the southern end of the Salento, rich with folklore and unique musical traditions. I Briganti di Terra D'Otranto is one of the best, and longest lived working groups in the Salento...their repertoire is classic Salento pizzica, combined with much borrowed from the Greek culture of southern Salento, often sung in Griko, a widespread Greek dialect south of Lecce. This was shot at the annual Sagra della Insalata Grika, the Greek Salad Festival!

This song, "Caterina", is on their new CD, and is a traditional song from Southern Italy, from Campania, I am pretty sure...I have a few versions from Napoli (three by Marcello Colasurdo!!!!), but the words/parole are different in Giro's version, and the Napoli version is much longer.
