Practice Makes Perfect
I was staying in Panama City this particular August Sunday night. National Independence days are coming up in early November; this marching band, a street away from my hotel, was out in force practicing their craft. I especially enjoyed the drummer with the black cap and gray beard. This wasn't his first day on the job! From my room, I enjoyed the music for a couple hours.

There are many shop tours in UA-cam, so I thought it time that I showed mine. I did this in one take. Thinking of words while focusing on the camera is harder than it looks. I'm not usually this absent minded! But it is what it is and my shop is good enough for most every one of my needs. Enjoy!

Morning Fish Feeding - We have 30 or 40 Tilapia and a few random fish that our gardener Armando brought from a local river. We named the two big ones Hoover and ElectroLux. Anyone know what they are? The water is on the cool side this morning, 73 F. (23 C.). As the warms another four degrees, they become even more active. We don't eat the fish, but we use the tank water to water the greenhouse ...

Our fish tank in our greenhouse has predominantly Tilapia, but there are a couple river fish that have grown to enormous proportions. We named them Hoover and Electrolux. They eat a diet of commercial Tilapia feed and lots of leaves from our yucca plants. They also like lettuce and other greens from the greenhouse. Removing Shipping Container Doors
Переглядів 2,8 тис.4 роки тому
For our shipping container house in Panama, we decided to remove a pair of container doors and build a glass block wall in the opening. The doors are just below the carport roof, so we used a rope over one of the roof supports and tied the rope to the door locking hardware. We used an angle grinder with a thin metal cutting disk to cut through the hinge pins. The rest is in this video. These do...

Sadly, the pond is no more. There was a strong earthquake that cracked the tank. We had to act quickly to save fish. We transported them to a friend's outdoor pond. They are very happy there!
I was in Panama March and April. PC, David and Bocas. Traveling from Lima. I thought of you everyday. Hope all's is well.
@@perfectlylonely Hi there! Thanks for thinking of us, hope you had a good trip!
Hey Panamafred :) I’m still trying to decide whether to remove my two root canal-treated teeth. I’ve checked the costs and researched online for hours, but I’m still wondering if it’s worth it. The video where we talked about this is now private, so I’m writing to you here (sorry). What are your experiences after a long time? What advice can you give me? Thank you a lot Michael
@@mb6845 Michael, it's hard to say. Do you have any symptoms? Pain? Oozing? How is your overall health? How many years would you have to live without those teeth to chew on? Would you replace them? That's a lot to chew on. Dentistry is an imperfect science for sure, and we can't get good answers from the experts. Have you read The Toxic Tooth? Me? I would 100% pull them again, my health is so much better. Best wishes.
Hey :)) Thank you for your quick reply. I don't have any major health issues, but I feel tired and dizzy most of the time. Doctors can't find anything, but I have been feeling tired and lacking energy for many years now. I'm 41, so I would get zirconium implants. You don't have implants? I haven't read the book you mentioned. I'm really struggling with this decision. I don't want to pay 10k and then realize nothing has changed... hm... I don't know.
I was your nurse in Savannah, GA about 10 years ago and still tell people about this house. I am from Panamá also so I was pretty excited about it.

Hey you had two root canal teeth removed, im having pain for two years now, did you replace the teeth with implants?
Not yet. Jury is out on getting implants.
@@panamafred1 is it a money issue for you or are you worried that implants will cause problems like root canals did?
@@thehardlife5588 I think the fact that it is invading the bone is distressful to me. I'd hate to spend a ton of cash only to get a bone infection. I can't take antibiotics so I am concerned. I don't know if there is a best solution here. I can only urge young kids to not eat as much inflammation causing sugar and carbs. To really go down the rabbit hole, oxalate in vegetables cause gum and bone issues too. Check UA-cam for Sally K Norton oxalates.

Great idea.
I used a smaller similar design to bend all the pieces for my E link on Pele' OBB (Odd Ball Bender / 100T press Brake) has 8,000 lbs of metal in it, I can't wait to get my tooling installed and test it out..
Sounds like paradise to me!
Hi Mike. It's pretty darn nice, with lots of elements of paradise. But no place is perfect. The rainy season can be challenging as it lasts so long, but there is a lot more lush green than dry brown during the dry season. I'm concerned that the dry seasons in the future may be too dry, so I want to get several large rainwater storage tanks so we can keep our yard attractive to birds and other wildlife. The night birds and creatures are nonstop though, and it makes us know that living here in the mountains on the rim of a (hopefully) extinct volcano that we are two very fortunate people. Saludos!
@@panamafred1 You both definitely are!! I´m a gringo in the Brazilian savana (cerrado) region. We are also very worried about extended dry seasons. If your into it, the permaculture folks make quite a lot of ´cisterns´ out of steel mesh and cement mix. Its quite surprising because its cheap, and only 1-2cm thick but supports incredible amounts of water.
Nice one Fred, i'm working on one of similar size at the moment. Nice to see the trusses worked out. I can't afford to throw vast amounts of steel at my brake like most other DIYers do, so it nice to see that something like yours works... Saludos.
Hi Mike. Thanks! It takes up a lot of real estate in my shop, but I am always surprised how much I use it. We have a lot of 1/16" diamond plate aluminum in the house and the brake does a fine job of bending an 8-footer. Good luck with yours! Saludos igual.
Crazy awesome
Aww thanks!

Thank you Gary. El Mecano, Chi Chi Bali, those little pueblos are so nice. I wish there was a way to bring solar power to them. So many people have to carry old car batteries on their shoulders some distance to get them charged. We love living in the El Valle area!
Can we bend 14 and 16 gauge MS sheet with this?
Great house concept! How hot does it get inside the house in peak hot time? (I live in Sri Lanka which also gets a lot of sun light, so wondering if we should use air conditioner to cool a container house always)
Thank you! We live in the mountains of Panama where we need neither heat nor air conditioning year round. Our windows are always open. I insulated the roof because shipping containers are ovens in the sun. However, if I were building where heat/air conditioning is normal, I would insulate the heck out of the house. In a full-sun environment where it is very hot, I would consider building a new roof a few feet above the shipping container roof. Leave enough space to let the wind blow through the space between the two roofs. This would be natural cooling. If you live in a cooler, damper climate, beware of condensation forming on the inside walls when the temperature is below the dew point. This can cause mold to grow on the walls.
I am worrying about building a 4 foot one. And I will be using 1/4 wall C section that I own.
Good luck. I built it then adjusted as needed when it broke. Real time engineering is my specialty. 😁 Have fun!
Excellent, it makes a sharp, crisp angle. I worked in a union sheet metal shop - #126- s. calif. 26 gauge was what we'd make our standard ducting out of. May I suggest squirting in a shot of oil on the hinges? And cutting the corners on the floor beams back to 45* would make things safer. thumbs up / gonna see what else you've made
Hey thanks Gary. I appreciate your comment. Thanks for the reminder to oil the hinges.
Awhhh Fred, how clever.
Thanks Scott. We'll see how clever I am when the strong winds blow!

Hi Fred, I followed your sheet metal brake a long time ago and now I am in Alaska putting together all the plans for a shipping container home/shop. The one I am doing is identical to what I see on your description of how to cut out a shipping container wall. The photo quoted was "Here's the space between the containers at the start of the day." I am just wondering how I can contact you to ask a few questions. Thanks so much and what an awesome job!

If you were stranded on a desert island and made that, I'd be impressed. I just bought a Chicago brand model 8/16 break at an auction for $200.
I think I will take that as a compliment 😁. Actually I am kinda on a desert island -- I live in Panama where our options are quite limited. Kudos on your awesome purchase!
@@panamafred1 How do you like living in Panama and why did you choose it over Portugal or Croatia? More importantly, why did you choose to become an ex-pat?
@@sandercurtis1847 My wife and I have been retired here a bit more than 13 years now. We like it; the weather is good where we live in the rural mountains -- no need for heating or AC. The air is clean and fresh most of the time unless someone is burning, which happens a lot less now with education. And nature is right in our back yard -- sloths, boas, birds, you name it. We can get most of what we want within a 40-minute drive. I feel much more self-reliant here and free from the Nanny State. When we built our house, there was only one inspection -- at the end -- by the fire department who checked the main panel for correct wiring. We wish the food was better -- when was the last time you saw a Panamanian restaurant in the States? We chose Panama because it is close to the States. It is relatively safe here compared to some other Latin American countries, and we have never had a problem beyond the very-seldom Sneaky Pedro visiting us in the night to attempt petty theft. Panama uses the U.S. Dollar. When we came here, Panama had a program to attract expats and the process was quick and easy. Prices aren't the cheapest in the world, but are entitled to numerous discounts -- I used it at the dentist the other day to receive a 15% discount off a $300 root canal. And being retired, there is a special line in government offices and banks for us old people who get priority. I would love to live in Portugal, a beautiful country for sure. Croatia wasn't on the map for us at the time but understand it is lovely and affordable. Why did we chose to be expats? When my wife and I met 15 years ago, she expressed a life-long desire to live outside of the U.S.A. -- she decided that when she was 10 after writing a report on the Galapagos penguins. After writing the report, she told her parents that she wanted them to send her to the University of Mexico right then! Just a bit precocious. When we moved here, other expats moved out of the States at the same/similar time because of Bush or Obama. We moved for a new cultural experience. When I was in the service many, many years ago, I was told that I had zero aptitude for languages and that I would never speak a second one. I'm not fluent, but I can speak Spanish sufficiently to be easily understood in a conversation. I pick up and take home our gardener four days a week (I don't want him on the buses during Covid) and we have very involved discussions about a wide range of topics during the drive. It feels good to have this accomplishment. I say I speak Tarzan Spanish. We both feel that we have grown exponentially and don't see moving back to the States. So much more, but this is the short answer. I have lots of stories on my blog at panamashippingcontainerhouse.com -- just dig through the Table Of Contents. Thanks for your comment. Fred
@@panamafred1 You are an impressive and adventurous man. All the best to you.

Yes. Seven inch angle grinder. But today, I would want to use my new (Milwaukee) metal cutting circular saws if I could. Much cleaner and easier and faster cutting. The only issue is that you can't get as close to the floor with the circular saws because the base is too wide.
Using 7 inch grinder?
How sheet thickness you can make
Eight feet of 1/16" aluminum. Four feet of 1/16 steel. That is all I have bent so far.
Hello I am from algeria Could you help me to build this bend sheet metal
You should see the MAJOR project that is going on now. The entire length of Calle Principal is being transformed. Drainage ditches put underground. Widened BRICK sidewalks. Bike lane. Road will be resurfaced. The trade-off is that a lot of the street parking is going away, for example the pull in parking in front of the public market and some restaurants. It will be torn up for a year or so. Mud in the rainy season and blowing dirt in the dry season. We're glad we live up on the rim! Now what the pueblo needs is a central park like the one in Penonome or any pueblo in Mexico! The big lot across the side street is where I think it would be ideal. Thanks for the comment.
This brings back such memories. I still have a house there. If you turn left at 1:37, my house is two blocks down.

the only thing to improve his design is to put a strong threaded rod with 2 nuts either side of the high point in the truss to be able to tension the week point in the truss because over time and on thicker material the angle will distort an bend
