This is a show I recorded back when I was around 14 years old. Friday and Saturday nights were spent listening to the Opry for me.

    That's Irving Kaufman, right? What label & year? I've got a Zonophone version with Billy Murray c.1905.

      I'm not sure about the year, but the label is Grey Gull and I think it is Vernon Dalhart.

      Not the original. It has been used on some of the dvd releases because of copyright issues I think, but I don’t know the whole story on that.

    My Grandfather, Bill Brown, played lap steel, Dobro, Steel Guitar, and Guitar in this band in the '30s and '40s on WDBJ Radio out of Roanoke, VA. Thanks for sharing!

      That's awesome! They were such a great band! Where was Bill Brown born and raised? Also, I see you are a beekeeper. That is something I've wanted to do. A lot of my family kept bees.

      @@JamieHoltBanjo Hey Jamie, he was born in the hills and hollows of western NC, I believe in Barnardsville, if not really close. I know for a fact that's where my grandmother was raised. He came to Roanoke, VA in the late '30s to play music on WDBJ radio, and this is where he remained until he passed in '87. If you'd like some of the old band photos to go along with your records, I'd gladly email you over what I have! I try to play the guitar, mandolin, have messed a little with a banjo as a kid, played around with a fiddle a little bit. Beekeeping, if you have any questions, shoot me a message! Whereabouts do you live? So how in the world did you ever discover the band??

    Jamie, I have heard (but do not have) a performance of Lester & Earl on the opry where Earl is grossly out-of-tune and rather sloppy in some points. Do you have this recording? What is the date of it? It was near the end of their tenure. Thanks!

      I met him at Bean Blossom in 84 and saw him perform several times after that. I have a 5 year old son and he loves Bill Monroe.

      The man singing on this one is Buster Carter. He's buried at Delta and was grandpa Carter's cousin.

      Bill Monroe was having a great time on this and it shows. He had the best fiddler there was, but you can tell he's enjoying having Uncle Josh on stage playing with them.

      ehh not really, nothing ever matched the popularity of flatt and scruggs. the earl scruggs revue did poorly in bluegrass circles (slightly better in folk circles) and the Nashville grass did well in bluegrass but neither ever regained the power and influence they had as they had under the "foggy mountain boys"

      Lester was good and stayed good, and back to the roots again after the few last disaster LP's with Earl. I completely dislike what Scruggs went on to do, useless

      I saw the Earl Scruggs Revue in about 1979 and they were absolutely terrible. They came out an hour late. Stevie sat at the piano and did nothing Randy looked like he was hopped up on drugs and rolled his head around and play the same hot lick over and over again. Earl got out a comb to use as a slide. One of the worst band performances I've ever seen

      @@Elgatoviejo Ya love Earl, and he loved his boys, and we wish we had liked them together better, but they tired something new that did not last, was not popular...but they tried. We Earl fans came in with great expectations so we were doomed to disappoiintment, I guess. Earl had been such an innovator in the 40s & 50s.
