    Wow. Thanks for this. I'm pretty annoyed that this i the first I'm hearing about this mode. I've gotten pretty used to B now and just from these 13 minutes I wish I stated with Ulti mode (or whatever it's called). The fact that you can bounce between the two is very impressive. Also , that graphic you have of the red and blue for the paddle touches and the the letters appearing during the dits and dahs is really very cool . Is that something you wrote yourself? It seems it would be a good thing to use to "measure" one's accuracy. Thanks again. Subscribed.

    Beautiful key, great video and incredible live display on the left. I've just started learning cw with a Morserino & a Bamatech TP-3. Now, I have a beginner question: does the pitch of the cw "sound" affect the amount of data being transmitted? I hear a lot of very high pitch sounds on POTA / QRP videos, is there a technical reason or is it just personal preference? I'm asking for a friend who has tinnitus and struggles with very high pitch sounds... 😉 Cheers! 73 de 2E0HJN / Essex County / UK

      @AshLeaFen Місяць тому

      I’m not an expert, but nobody else has jumped in yet after a week. I believe that the carrier wave itself doesn’t have a “pitch”. It’s in radio frequency ranges (MHz at least). The tone comes from the radio mixing in an audible beat frequency. So the pitch you hear is completely up to your radio-up to you, assuming it’s adjustable on your radio. It may change a bit depending on whether you’re tuning to the exact frequency being transmitted (zero beat) or slightly off-the mixed tone will be different. Many times people hunting in POTA will purposely transmit slightly off of zero beat to stand out from the crowd. So you’ll hear a variety of tones. Still, all of the tones should be able to be shifted down for easier listening with tinnitus. And anyway, it should have nothing to do with the amount of data carried. Mainly just a personal preference. Hope that helps!

    Beginner here. Showing my ignorance, can you switch modes on the same keyer? Or, do you have to buy one versus the other keyer with the different modes already setup?

    • @AshLeaFen
      @AshLeaFen 2 місяці тому

      Most keyers support multiple modes, I believe, and have software (or less commonly a physical) switch. I personally use the WKmini, which is very tiny and minimalistic with no physical controls, but easy enough to change via software.

    One of the best keyed vids. Thanks. I have a couple dual lever Keydets but always tried learning w/ iambic B. I prefer my straight old fashioned key. Probably because it works for me but I find it tiring in a long QSO. I’ll pull out my hardly ever used Begali and try Ultimatic, although I’ll need to find that old Winkeyer too!

    My kind of video! Thanks for taking the time to create the paddle diagrams at the left. If you haven't ever tried it, you might want to play with the OZ mode, which is a variation of Ultimatic that repeats dahs on squeeze instead of the last pressed paddle. Many characters are the same as Ultimatic. You lose the ability the squeeze X, but you gain the ability to squeeze C (a biggie) with OZ.

    This kind of video is very difficult to make - giving a pattern visual in the left hand side along with the audio and simultaneous live fingering on the video, AND talking and commenting at the same time! And, yes, that key cost you a small fortune on its own, didn’t it? Although at your level of expertise you can make a rat trap sound like a Begali. Great work, keep it up.

    I got introduced to Forth back in the early 80s. At that time real compilers were expensive and still difficult to use. I bought FigForth. It was double threaded. I remember tracing through Forth with a debugger. It wasn't symbolic then. I was using CP/M. I remember looking at the trace and counting the ratio of opcodes that did real work to those that just did the overhead. Direct threading makes more sense. However, at that time I couldn't find any complete direct threading packages. Later I did make a byte code interpreter that was efficient but it used a real compiler to generate the byte codes. The problem was the the compilers is difficult to maintain as it is more traditional but no one wanted to program in Forth. One time I went to a customer's site and they were using Forth for control. by Forth Inc. It was easy to try new things. What I hated was the dreaded stack crash. I would have provided a side by side comparison of a double vs single threaded Forth so people could see how more efficient the single threaded Forth is.

    • @AshLeaFen
      @AshLeaFen 8 місяців тому

      That’s the biggest drawback of Ultimatic. It’s unpopular and so unsupported on many radios. I have to use an external keyer (e.g. WKmini) with my Icom 7300 & 705 for example…

  • @Jubileeos
    @Jubileeos 8 місяців тому

    I have been coming back to this video again and again and it is by far the best explanation of keying modes out there. Thank you for your amazing presentation skills on such a niche technical topic. By the way, what mode did you use before learning ultimatic? Did it take you long to switch to it? Your arguments towards the reduced effectiveness of the iambic modes are very strong, although some of the issues you mention could be fixed by using winkeyer and its more advanced timing settings.

    • @AshLeaFen
      @AshLeaFen 8 місяців тому

      Thanks and glad you like the videos! I started with the built-in Iambic-B mode on Icom radios. But only for 3-4 months. Then I experimented with other modes. Made my own keyer to play with ideas, and settled on Ultimatic. I have heard others also say that some of the issues can be addressed by timing settings. Essentially a delay on the cutoff to trigger Iambic behavior is useful. For example, with didah for A, if triggering an automatic didahdit (R) is delayed until 1/3rd or so into the dah then it’s much easier to key A’s and R’s.

  • @Lyndon_K
    @Lyndon_K 11 місяців тому

    Hey Ashley, great video with awesome graphics! I agree with you about Iambic B timing being difficult when keying faster. I kept getting unwanted extra dits at the end of my characters and this was causing a lot of mistakes on the air. I got so frustrated that I switched back to Iambic A. I didn't really know much about Ultimatic keying but I am definitely going to give it a try. Thank you very much for such a high quality video. 73 DE VE3IGS

    My IC-705 has a dumb-ass IAMBIC "B" Mode built in keyer with ZERO options to change it - and with ICOM's version there is literally NO WAY to get away with a squeeze during an "A" -- you will get an "R" every time. I even tried at 5 WPM so I could try to get the squeeze released during the initial Dit, but the built in keyers "helpful" memory ignores this an changes your "A" to an "R" anyway. If I had known that ICOM was so STUUUUUPID, I would never have bought the IC-705. Thank God I found out before purchasing a companion IC-7300 desktop radio. I bought the Yaesu FT-710 instead of the IC-7300 specifically because of this issue. The Yaesu FT-710 isn't perfect either, because the Mode A implementation doesn't seem to have memory, so it will only accept Dit or Dah insertion during a squeeze if you get the timing right -- but this is still better than dealing with ICOM's Mode B Clown-Show Radios (how many extra unwanted Dit's and Dah's can we get into this funny little car! Oh, look they're still coming ! ). I guess I can live with the lack of memory on FT-710 Mode A keyer for now, but it's pretty disappointing that you have to choose between ICOM's crappy Mode "B" injecting unwanted Dits and Dahs into your sending, and Yaesu's no-memory Mode "A" causing dropped Dits and Dahs when you are sending fast - Hobson's Choice. You would think that something as basic as a CW keyer is something that companies that claim to manufacture world class amateur radios could get right, but apparently not . . .
