My mouthpiece history - for what it's worth. Bought a Bach 7C in '72 ($6.50/retail), used it through high school. Switched to a 10-1/2C for soprano in D&B corps, a 3C for cornet and the 10-1/2C for university marching band and wind ensembles. Later moved to the 10-1/2CW (cushion rim) for trumpet and a 7C for cornet. People should try the CW rims - they're very comfortable and might help with stamina. If a piece is largely below the staff I'll switch to a 3C. I did an inventory of my trumpet mouthpieces: 1x 10-1/2CW, 1x 10-1/2C, 4x 7C's (unused).

Having a good sound has way more to do with mouth configuration and embouchure than the actual mouthpiece. If you can't sound good on a 7C, you certainly won't sound good on a 3C.

  • @laurajanetexascigarmaven6788

I started in 1973 with a 3C mouthpiece. When I joined the jazz ensemble, I went to a Schilke 14A4A, which helped in the upper range. Now that I am returning to playing, I went back to a 3C.

See my comments from 12/23. Bach makes, or made, a fairly large range of CW mouthpieces. The very old sales pamphlets talk about crooked teeth, (braces), and lip size. (They even made a 7CW.) Other makers do as well.

I'm a self-taught trumpet player, which is scary enough. I'm sure I'm making lots of mistakes. Played the saxophone for 21yrs then switched to trumpet. I hold my own at least in our chuch services but I really want to up my ability. One of the things I would like to do is play higher notes. I know a lot goes into it from facial muscle strengthening embouchure Etc and I definitely need to practice a lot more, which I plan to do this year. As of right now, I'm using a 7c. What would you recommend for a mouthpiece to help hit higher notes? Most Sundays all hit G but no chance I could hit a C and I would like to get there. Any suggestions for mouth pieces would be much appreciated! Thank you!

I find this video helpful for some, but also problematic and a bit misinformed. The biggest overall disagreement I have with this video is the dogmatic approach taken. Many assertions are made seemingly with the assumption that it is true and accurate for every player. The big claim made is that the 7C isn't sufficient for playing at a young age because of having to work too hard to produce a sufficient sound and articulation. The problem with this argument is that what works for one player does not necessarily work for another, and I believe that simply saying the Bach 7C is an inherently "bad" mouthpiece is the wrong approach. While most players switch away from a 7C as they get older, that does not mean it is a bad mouthpiece. Plus, the Bach 7C is NOT narrower NOR shallower than a Bach 3C. Further explained below: Bach mouthpieces (and the brand in general) are known for inconsistency (which I'm sure Mr. Grant is aware of). What is worse, and much lesser known, is that Bach mouthpieces are COMPLETELY inconsistent with its naming system. (As mentioned in the video, it is used across other brands --- many of them *are* consistent, adding to the confusion.) Using VennCAD software from Vennture mouthpieces (a game-changing free software!), you can plainly see that: - 3C has the narrowest rim diameter AND shallowest cup depth (easier high range- true) - 1 1/2C is not as deep as both the 5C and 7C. - The rim diameter between the Bach 1 1/2C, 5C, and 7C are quite similar Therefore, the naming claims in this video really don't apply to Bach Mouthpieces, even though the idea is standard with many brands. The only reasons in the video for the Bach 7C being a bad mouthpiece are that it is "shallower than a 5B," "you have to work very hard for good sound," and it is "harder to articulate on," the last two of which I would say don't apply to everyone. First of all, the assertion that the 7C is shallower than a 5B is true... It's still MUCH deeper than a 1 1/2C and a 3C (again, use VennCAD to verify). Plenty deep for young players to produce a good sound. Many players out there, including myself, would describe the Bach 7C as having a dark sound --- which comes from the deep cup. The overall idea that it is harder to produce a good sound or articulate well on a Bach 7C varies from player to player... suggesting a 5B seems like a good idea, but the point is that a 7C is not inherently bad because of the depth or width. (A 5B also might make you "work" even harder because it is deeper!) I would argue, from what I have seen from countless hours of research as well as my own experience, is that the RIM CONTOUR is much more important to the comfort and overall ease than any other aspect of a mouthpiece. According to multiple trumpet herald pages, many players describe the 7C to have an uncomfortable rim, and that may also be true in young players. To conclude, I would argue that no mouthpiece is inherently "bad," as it depends entirely on the player's oral structure and technique to "make" a mouthpiece work. I think we should be teaching kids correctly about the possible problems with equipment and properly diagnosing issues that could stem from many things, rather than saying that "the 7C is terrible and you have to get rid of it!" If you read this far, thanks! Hope this is helpful, and I'd love if you left a reply!

Hi, Ryan! I appreciate the thoughtful and detailed comment, and the courtesy of your tone when leaving it. I can tell this is a topic you care about quite a lot, and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and findings! The educational series on my channel is a place for me to take what has helped my own students progress and make it accessible for everyone. As long as my experiences continue to support those findings, I'm going to continue to teach it that way. That said, I completely understand and respect if others have had different findings, and I would expect them to teach accordingly! I don't mind sharing some of my experiences, though: For more than 60 of my beginners from year 2 to year 13 of teaching (and a handful of my more experienced students) - all who played on 7c mouthpieces at the time - I've asked them to try out the 5b alongside their 7c for a week. Another 20 or so - who started with me from day one - started on 5b mouthpieces instead of 7c (I did not start doing this with students until about 5 years ago... year 8 of my private lessons teaching). For the 60+ who tried both, my approach was some variation of "Can you do me a favor? I'm experimenting with different mouthpieces for students and want to make sure you have the best fit for you. This might not be better, but I'd like for you to try it." Of those students, all but 3 reported the 5b as easier to play. Most of them made comments like "it feels more comfortable", "it sounds better", "I can play higher", etc. - sometimes noting benefits you wouldn't expect by simply looking at the anatomy of the mouthpiece itself. I have many theories as to why, but they're just theories; the point is that the overwhelming majority (over 95%) of my students who switched to 5b from 7c have benefitted directly from the switch and continued to see long-term benefits as well. This is a finding I've shared with many other colleagues (some private teachers, others band directors) who have reported similar results after trying themselves, but I don't have their data to show, so I'll stick with just my own experiences for now. For the 20 who started on 5b mouthpieces from day one, every single student excelled beyond the average student in their band - even those who struggled keeping a consistent practice routine. You could say that this is due to other factors, such as having a private teacher from the very beginning (specifically one who already had at least 8-13 years of experience working with beginners at that point), but combining it with the findings of the other 60, I feel comfortable concluding that the mouthpiece played a noticeable factor in the success of the 20. For full transparency, I'll also mention that the 3 who preferred the 7c ended up quitting after their first year (quitting band altogether, not just lessons) whereas only 1 of the students who played the 5b quit after one year. However, I wouldn't say that "3" is a large enough test size to conclude that the 7c was one of the causes of quitting, especially since other factors were at play with those 3 students. I also had a handful of beginners (5 or 6) who were playing a 3c try out the 5b, and they all gave me the same response (that they preferred the 5b). Again, I don't consider 5-6 students to be a large enough test to conclude that the 5b helps more than the 3c, or vice versa. Aside from mentioning my own experiences, it's important to note that EVERY mouthpiece brand has inconsistencies - even the brands not "known" for inconsistency - and the brands that are the most popularly-used and the longest-standing (like Bach) will naturally be under the most scrutiny because of their position/status. Unfortunately for them, they have seen much more consistency in recent years but continue to have mouthpieces in stock at stores from their earlier years. I wonder whether their recently-manufactured mouthpieces are truly less consistent than other brands, but admittedly, that specific avenue is not an avenue I've been able to narrow down from research. All these factors and variables are why I have chosen to rely more on my years of experiences and observations in real-time as a teacher than my years of research. Thanks again for your reply!

I don't agree with your assessment at all. If you use e.g. Venncad software to compare them. 7C has the largest volume in the cup compared to 5B. But 7C also has a larger volume than the 1 1/2 C mouthpiece. The differences are only in the sound you are looking for, the rims of these three are nearly identical too. The numbering of Bach moutpieces is not logical either. So claiming that 7C is a bad mouthpiece makes no sense at all.
