Hey guys! I just want to say thank you so much to all who've subscribed. I can't believe I've already over 100 subscribers! I feel like I really should do some new videos for you, but life's really busy these days, and I'm lacking inspiration. So please forgive me the lack of new videos... I'm sure I'll do one again some day, but I can't really say when that'll happen. π

7 Great Viola Performances You Should Listen To (from Twoset's Violin vs viola skit)

I have long been wishing that Twoset Violin would some day make a serious viola video (hush, let me have my dreams!) Now, recorder gangβs example made me realize that it might be better not to wait for the impossible but do something myself. Unfortunately, Iβm far from good enough with viola to make a video like that on my own. So I took a different approach. (I've never edited videos before an...
Unpopular opinion (and I'm a cellist): Bach cello suites always sound better on viola than cello
I'm going to purposely never learn Bach Suites for anything because of how annoying it is to hear you people play these pieces for hundreds of years, thousands of times, here and forevermore. You are all annoying. Play something else. Invent something else. If the great composers of our world knew you would play their pettiest, easiest, no-brained pieces over and over and over again, I bet they would've destroyed them. On behalf of human evolution, F***K YOU.
the F# major version of the telemann piece was beautiful β€οΈ
What no pieces by Henri Vieuxtemps??? He didnβt write much for us, but when he did, it was FIRE. Check out ΓlΓ©gie Op.30 and the Sonata he made (Op.36) are just some of the best pieces for viola Iβve ever heard.
guys i need help, I'm thinking of a piece that sounds exactly like the first three notes of 5:38 as well as beethoven larghetto. I think the piece is russian but I am not too sure. Sorry if that comes out to be literally any piece.
Sorry, I'm drawing a blank too... I can think of one song that goes like that, but I can't remember its name... pretty sure it's not a classical piece, though. (I can almost remember lyrics to it... almost)
Maybe a movie score?
Zigeunerweisen?
Nice video. But you absolutely should have included Martinu's madrigals for violin and viola (especially the second movement)
I really like Henry Vieuxtemps hammage Γ£ Paganini
Yess! Spread the viola love. The only thing I regret about playing the viola is not doing so earlier. (TSV's jokes made me realise how badly I wanted to learn it.)
Grato.
I don't think you need to say "just kidding" when you're a violist. The other musicians don't lol.
What's strange is that the lowest note on the clarinet is only a tone above the lowest note on the viola.
And I would like to add Hoffmeisterβs viola concertos in D and B-flat major, Johann Christian Bach- viola concerto in Π‘ minor, Hindemithβs viola sonatas
The first guy said no to slurrs lol
Thank you so much. All are beautiful.
Roberto DΓaz version of Walton Viola Concerto is great, just in case you havenβt hear it yet
Thank you! I actually had missed it, and it is great like you said.
Nice idea, thank you. Your french quote has a error: βJe vous suis bien obligΓ© pour la faiblesse de vos yeuxβ (you wrote βdes votreββ¦ all the best and thank you for your time
Thanks for the comment & the correction! Heh, I don't speak any French at all, of course I messed it up......)

Some lovely performances of some lovely pieces. Thank you for gathering them all together for us
Henri Vieuxtemps Capriccio 'Hommage Γ Paganini' is probably my favorite viola piece.
Bach's Cello Suite No.1 in G was NOT written for Viola and is therefore not a Viola piece. It is an adaptation. And ... it is BWV 10071, NOT BMW 1007 as you wrote at time 0:52 ... The latter is a car ! .. sheesh!
About Bach, I know: Like I said, these are the pieces Twoset used in their violin vs viola video, and I wanted to post here proper versions of them. The second thing is just embarrassing, I don't even know how that happened and how I didn't notice it. Thanks for pointing it out!
β@@violistontheroof Well at least you are humble and honest and dont "dig in" when there is an error. I appreciate the honesty.
Autocorrect is too ignorant to know what BWV is, ouch! Bad on them, though.
Thank you. I have been looking for this songs
Nice list!
This gets left off EVERYBODY's list, but Forsyth has an AMAZING viola concerto Shcarwenka's Viola Fantasy Glinka's Viola Sonata in D min Brahms has TWO viola sonatas Pretty much everything by Rebecca Clarke (Lullabye, Viola Sonata, Passacaglia) Bruch also has a concerto for clarinet and viola Mendelssohn wrote a sonata for viola and piano Mozart, Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola Handel-Halvorsen, Passacaglia for violin and viola DvoΕΓ‘k's viola quintet (his work in general makes good use of viola) There's a cello concerto by Elgar that was transcribed for viola, and the entire comment section is pretty much people arguing over which instrument plays it better
Those are some great pieces! Some of them are on my other video, the one for duets. π
Forsyth is awesome I loved playing the piece
PASSACAGLIA RULES SO MUCH!! As a cellist I both like Passacaglia and Bach's Cello Suite better on viola than cello
I have played most these! Great picks love them all! You should definitely post more
another great unknown piece is Williams Suite for Viola and Orchestra. Its an amazing piece that is very under represented
Idk why twoset hates violas so much , I genuinely like them tbh . They sound like a creamy cello ( thatβs what I thought viola was until I knew the difference , a year ago ) . I suppose every instrument can sound very beautiful in its own ways , just that u need to discover it. Of course you need a soloist who can express its sound well to the audience ( with the grace of ling ling and 40 hrs of practice every day ;) ) Great video there buddy !
a creamy cello eh?
@@mikaschmidt2110 yup , like I compared it with coffee so like cello is stronger while viola kinda is like a little like cappuccino feel π ..... idk if people got that
@@Aparajitha... cappuccino, better known as firewood jk, it creamy cello actually makes sense somehow
Twoset did not hate the Viola
They don't hate it, it's just that the viola is a meme, outside of all jokes it is indeed a beautiful instrument
Thank you for an educational video! Kuula and Bridge, two composers to note. I had actually never heard of Bridge before, Kuula I only connected to vocal works. For a ninth, I would add Mozarts G major duo, perfect if you need cheering up.
Thank you! I'm sort of happy you knew Kuula, basically no one (not Finnish) I've mentioned him has heard of him. And yes, I really like that Mozart's piece too!
I'm Swedish so I guess that helped - we have strong ties to Finland. It was part of Sweden until 1809. There are tons of lesser known composers, and usually you only know the ones near you. If I pick three Swedish at random - Joseph Martin Kraus, Hilding Rosenberg, Franz Berwald ... Do you know them? If you like avant-garde I have Rosenbergs viola concerto in a playlist (I was too lazy to make videos for my channel...)
Thanks for those recs! I'd heard of Franz Berwald, but not the others. That Rosenbergs viola concerto is great.
I like the notes on the side!
Wow nice! Everything in this video sound so cool! I think I underestimated the viola. #violagangπ€
It is - sadly - a display of the lack of viola repertoire. Of seven selected pieces, two are transcriptions. Sure, the Bach cello suites rewritten for the viola is standard for anyone playing viola, but still - it is a work for the cello. The composers Stamitz and Zelter, would they be remembered today if there wasn't the need to find original viola repertoire? So their viola concertos are played if not much else.. On another note: Playing Paganini Caprice 24 on the viola, Primrose must have had big hands to do the tenths...
And I must add - I appreciate your effort! Big thanks!
@@altoclef6688 Thank you! :) Yeah, I've been thinking of making another video with only viola repertoire, but haven't yet had time (read: energy...) to get started. As I said I picked these from that video by Twoset, I'd like to do one with more of my own favorites.... (a bit smoother one, hopefully)
To replace those two, I have nominated viola sonata by rebecca clarke, and viola capriccio by henri vieuxtemps
While there is a somewhat limited repertoire for the viola, there are a lot of other great pieces that werenβt mentioned in this video. Suite HΓ©braΓ―que, Clarke Sonata, both Brahms sonatas, the Arpeggione sonata, which is commonly played on viola, Shostakovich sonata, Symphonia Concertante, Schumann Fairytales, etc, there is so much more, and I didnβt even mention chamber music.
I once read in an interview with Tabea Zimmermann that she finds this aspect of playing the viola suits her - that she can't rely on a huge existing repertoire and instead has the motivation both to premiere new pieces and make an effort to find older pieces. I'd also like to add that there's nothing inherently inferior about transcriptions. ErlkΓΆnig is also arguably a transcription of voice repertoire for the violin but it's not regarded as a less worthy part of violin repertoire just because it wasn't originally written for violin by Schubert.
@twosetviolin please listen to this
Someone should code a bit that sends this link into all the comments of all of two sets videos
I finally found you... after all these years...

@@franklinsolomon4474 Thank you! This is one of my favorite viola pieces, but I'd totally missed that performance.
They never pay attention to the viola except if they need It for joks.
