This sermon revolves around the central call for renewal, urging the congregation to embrace change and growth as they prepare for the new year. The message emphasizes that personal transformation and a shift in perspective are crucial to navigating new challenges and seizing new opportunities in 2025. While the sermon is rich in motivational exhortations and grounded in some scriptural references, a deeper theological analysis reveals significant gaps, particularly regarding its treatment of grace, human effort, and spiritual transformation. ### Semi-Pelagianism: A Foundational Concern The sermon’s recurring emphasis on human effort in initiating and sustaining change risks aligning with **Semi-Pelagianism**, a subtle theological error that compromises the purity of the Gospel. Semi-Pelagianism asserts that humans, though weakened by sin, can still take the first steps toward God and contribute to their own salvation. This view falls short of biblical orthodoxy, which teaches that salvation and sanctification are entirely the work of God’s grace, as humans are spiritually incapable of seeking or pleasing God apart from divine intervention (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 3:10-12). In this sermon, phrases such as *“We need to change ourselves”* and *“New pressures require new adjustments”* emphasize personal responsibility in a way that lacks the necessary theological grounding in God’s transformative grace. While it is true that believers must actively respond to God’s work in their lives, the sermon does not sufficiently anchor this call in the power of the Holy Spirit or Christ’s finished work on the cross. Instead, it risks presenting change as something achieved primarily through human resolve. ### The Sermon’s Approach to Change The sermon's opening sets the tone: *“Our happiness and well-being depend on our willingness to change and allow the Lord to change us.”* While this acknowledges God’s role in transformation, it places equal, if not greater, emphasis on human willingness. The call to *“change some habits”* and *“be ready for what God’s going to do”* frames spiritual growth as contingent on human initiative. However, biblical sanctification is not a 50-50 partnership between humans and God; rather, it is the work of the Holy Spirit, who both empowers and sustains believers in their growth (Philippians 2:13). The absence of a clear articulation of this dependence risks reducing sanctification to self-improvement, leaving the hearers to rely on their own strength. ### Law and Gospel Distinction The sermon effectively highlights the demands of the Law, urging listeners to examine their habits, attitudes, and responses. Statements like *“If you don’t change in 2025, you’re going to face the same hang-ups and mistakes”* emphasize the necessity of self-reflection and growth. Yet the Law’s primary function is to expose human inability and drive people to the Gospel for grace and renewal (Romans 7:7). While the sermon references grace-*“God wants to change you, and He will help you if you give Him all the pieces”*-it does not clearly present the Gospel as the foundation for change. Without the explicit proclamation of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection as the source of transformation, the hearer may conclude that their spiritual progress depends on their own determination, rather than the Spirit’s work within them. ### Indicatives and Imperatives: A Theological Imbalance The sermon leans heavily on imperatives-commands for believers to change, adjust, and act. Phrases such as *“We need to change inside ourselves”* and *“We must act, move forward, and mature”* dominate the message. While imperatives are a necessary part of Christian preaching, they must always flow from the indicatives-the truths of what God has already accomplished in Christ. The sermon’s failure to emphasize the indicatives of the Gospel (e.g., believers’ union with Christ, the indwelling Holy Spirit, and the assurance of salvation) risks burdening listeners with the weight of self-reliance. For example, when discussing the "new wine in old wineskins" metaphor (Luke 5:36-38), the sermon interprets this as a call for believers to remain pliable and willing to change. While this application is valid, it overlooks the primary indicative meaning of the text: Jesus is proclaiming the arrival of the new covenant, which cannot be contained within the old structures of the Law. This new covenant is founded entirely on Christ’s work, not human effort. A clearer articulation of this Gospel truth would have provided the necessary foundation for the sermon’s imperatives. ### The Role of Grace in Transformation The sermon makes sporadic references to God’s role in transformation, such as *“God wants to give you a brand-new life, not just a patch-up job”* and *“You don’t have to do it alone; God is there with you.”* These statements acknowledge grace but lack depth and specificity. They fail to explain how God’s grace operates through the Holy Spirit to bring about lasting change. Scripture teaches that believers are *“transformed by the renewal of [their] mind”* (Romans 12:2) and that this transformation is a work of the Spirit, who conforms them to the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18). By not expounding on this process, the sermon leaves the listener with a sense of grace as a vague, supplemental force, rather than the central agent of change. ### Practical Applications: Helpful but Theologically Shallow The sermon’s practical suggestions, such as developing habits of Bible reading, prayer, and tithing, are valuable. However, they are presented as tasks to achieve rather than as means of grace through which God transforms His people. For instance, the recommendation to *“read a proverb a day”* is helpful but does not explain how Scripture works to sanctify believers by revealing Christ and renewing their minds (John 17:17, 2 Timothy 3:16-17). Similarly, the encouragement to *“strike up a conversation about Jesus”* at Walmart or Sam’s Club is commendable but risks becoming another checklist item rather than a Spirit-empowered response to God’s grace. ### Addressing Semi-Pelagian Tendencies To guard against Semi-Pelagianism, the sermon could incorporate these theological correctives: 1. **Emphasize Human Inability**: Explicitly state that humans cannot change themselves apart from God’s grace (John 15:5). Acknowledge the depth of human sinfulness and the necessity of divine intervention. 2. **Proclaim Christ’s Sufficiency**: Anchor the call to change in Christ’s finished work, emphasizing that believers are already accepted and empowered because of His atonement (Galatians 2:20). 3. **Highlight the Spirit’s Role**: Clarify that the Holy Spirit is the agent of sanctification, enabling believers to grow in holiness and bear fruit (Galatians 5:22-23). 4. **Ground Imperatives in Indicatives**: Ensure every command to change flows from a declaration of God’s promises and actions in Christ, fostering a response of gratitude rather than obligation (Romans 12:1). --- ### Conclusion The sermon offers an energetic and heartfelt call for renewal in the new year, emphasizing the need for change, growth, and readiness to face new challenges. However, its heavy reliance on human effort and insufficient grounding in the Gospel risks lapsing into Semi-Pelagianism. By more explicitly proclaiming the transformative power of Christ’s work and the Holy Spirit’s role in sanctification, the sermon could better equip listeners to approach 2025 with both confidence in God’s unchanging grace and dependence on His sovereign power.

I have listened to this sermon at least 6 times and get something new from it every time. Keep both of these sermon’s handy and your life will change. Guaranteed.
