10 Years Matt Wantland Jamming with Rivet Pickups
Had the chance to hang out with 10 Years' guitarist Matt Wantland earlier today before their sold out gig at the Mercy Lounge in Nashville and grabbed a few minutes of him jamming with a Rivet '63/Rivet '64 pickup set.

Rivet Pickups Tone Demo w/ Earth's Dylan Carlson

We had a chance to see our friend Dylan Carlson the other day before Earth and Boris's sold out show at Third Man Records in Nashville. After the show, and despite the fact that we'd just been nearly destroyed by rock and roll, we realized that we had never uploaded this Rivet Pickups demo video that Dylan made for us last fall! Check it out to get a good sampling of what Rivet Pickups can do, ...

    Dylan bought kurt a shotgun, as kurt had his gun licence revoked for prior gun offences (shooting off guns in his large lakeside property). Both kurt and dylan enjoyed guns, so when kurt asked him to purchase a shotgun for home defence, he , as any friend would said sure. End of story, there is no conspiracy or other nonsense.

    I am confused as to how this is different from split coils except you don't get the benefit of having all 6 strings amplified. I don't see the advantages here since you could achieve these tones with a split coil system and EQ pedal plus have more response from your pickups.

    I stumbled upon this last week, I'm searching for a set of pickups for my new guitar, and I have something like a shred machine in mind (like Buckethead's and Satriani's tunes)... Really liked the concept of these pups, but based on this video, it hasn't got me yet... They sound like beautiful single coils, and the demo show some of single coil-like tunes playing. Even when you're using all the coils and mini coils at once, it didn't show what I was expecting to see... I'm curious how these will behave on somewhat high gain, and when shreding or soloing. Another question is about volume, when you activate the mini coils it won't mess with the volume dynamics, i.e. if you activate the treble mini coil, the high strings won't deliver more volume than the low strings that we will get some out of balance tunes. I really dig the idea, not sure that will buy it though (like I said, not sure this is what I'm looking for and from this video I really can't tell).

  • @BarryMoeCraig

    This video is epic PHAIL. You never do comparison of what it sounds like using just the one coil vs the sound with the added mini coil!!

    • @rivetpickups7831
      @rivetpickups7831 8 років тому

      +BarryMoeCraig Actually, most of the video is showing this! Watch the indicator lights in the top right corner to see which mini coil is on. When the lights are off, the mini coils are off, and you're just hearing the full-sized coil(s). Then, when the lights are on, you're hearing the full-sized coil(s) + the indicated mini-coil. Watch the pickup selector switch to see what full-sized coil is on at any given time. Make sense?

  • @AlanJohnPeach
    @AlanJohnPeach 8 років тому

    Deeply underwhelming video, sorry to say, as the concept seems great but honestly there's more tonal variety in my PRS McCarty pickups.

  • @JoeHartRocks
    @JoeHartRocks 8 років тому

    It's a very interesting concept, but I agree that this video may not be a great example. I mean, at 0:30 when they talk about adding the bass coil (which is the neck pickup), the pickup selector switch is still set for the bridge pickup. Or at least it looks that way to me in the video... Send me a couple of those and I'll make a video that really showcases what they can do!! :-)

    • @firstnamelastname7027
      @firstnamelastname7027 8 років тому

      +Joe Hart Hey Joe - I'm David, the inventor of Rivet - On that video, the big toggle switch controls the two "big coils" entirely normally as you'd expect from that sort of toggle switch: "rhythm, both, treble" functionality. But each of the little coils is turned on/off independently by its own push/pull pot. We tried to make the graphic show when the little guys are on off, and we just let the toggle position speak for itself. I agree with you all, though, that as the video producer I didn't do such a great job of guiding that process to show all the best sounds etc.

    • @JoeHartRocks
      @JoeHartRocks 8 років тому

      +David Petschulat It's a very interesting idea, though!! I'd love to see them really get put through their paces! I teach, and my students are always asking about gear and such and this seems like such a revolutionary idea... What is the output like? I'm guessing it's a pretty "standard" single coil (of course, it looks like nothing is "standard" with this pickup!) with a "half coil" added on. With both coils on, is if humbucking? How noisy is it with a loud amp and some gain? What magnets does it use (and I understand if that's a secret!). I'm just curious to get an idea of the tone and response that these pickups have. Thanks!!

    @nicolasrivera5310 8 років тому

    The design looks really cool and it's a fresh idea for sure, but sound wise i really didnt hear anything out of the ordinary. Maybe this video is not the best example of what this pickups are trying to express.
